Choteau High School launches focused welding and motor mechanics courses while expanding on the job training pilot. Vocational instructor John Nauck develops semester programs, collaborates with state and MSU experts, and plans hands on shop work to prepare students for trade schools or apprenticeships.
Enrollment in Choteau schools rose from 441 to 442 in the elementary and from 240 to 242 in the high school. Principal Robert Gormley cited Hast Farmington elementary’s temporary closure as the cause for the one student gain in elementary. The senior class at the high school leads with 67 students amid 60 juniors 54 sophomores and 61 freshmen.
Chateau High School's Bulldogs kickoff the season Friday Sept 10 with a trip to Fairfield. Coach John Rose reports 53 players, 11 lettermen, and early scrimmage underway. Notable lettermen include Curtis, Banis, Stenson, Scott, Davison, Yeager, Hansen, Shannon, Jacobs, Sabo. Shelby named a contender. dark horse tone persists. Schedule lists nine games through Oct 29 including Malta and Chinook matchups.
Chateau announces hunter safety classes start September fifteen at eight p m in the fireman's hall. A parent release form is required from Knudtzon Lumber Co or Bob Armstrong at the post office before minors participate. Adults are urged to enroll.
Funeral rites for Algon Udin former county commissioner and state representative from Fairfield were held Tuesday at the Masonic Temple Fairfield. Cremation in Great Falls followed his death August 28 after a long illness. Pallbearers listed include John Ammondson Ray Carlson Jim Ballantyne Emil Jackson Harold Genger and Lester Young. Born in Anbyn Sweden he moved to Fairfield in 1910 after arriving in Great Falls in 1903. He served 18 years as Teton county commissioner and one term as state representative. He was a member of the Fairfield Masonic Lodge and the Al Bedoo Shrine in Butte. He married Augusta Larson in Sweden who preceded him in death. Survivors include three children David Gideon and Mrs Miriam Allen a sister in Sweden and five grandchildren.
The Chateau draft board expands hours during the Vietnam crisis. It will be open 8 am to noon and 1 to 5 pm on the second floor of the Russell building.
Dedication of the new Trinity Lutheran Church parish education building is set for September 12 with an open house 1 to 4 p.m. and a dedication service at 4 p.m. Ground was broken June 28, 1964, to expand church facilities. The Bur ton Bench church was organized in 1901 by Pastor A G Lunde, and the first church building was built in 1907.
Government offices and most retail stores close Monday for Labor Day creating a three day holiday. Chateau Chamber of Commerce President Gale Isakson says the four day week will push the Acantha’s usual deadline earlier. Correspondents urged to mail copy Monday with submission arriving Tuesday morning.
Arvid Sundet defeated George Henderson at A and K Lanes in the Henderson-Sundet opening bowling match. Sundet earned his second win in nine years, besting Henderson who emphasized that age may slow him next season while noting his scores rose from .523 to .534 this year.
Jim Murphy son of Mr and Mrs Leo Murphy returned home last week from Santa Maria Mexico where he spent the summer working with Amigos Anonymous He will leave the latter part of September for Santa Clara California where he will resume his college studies.
Judge R. D. McPhillips announces Charles F. Dooley of Cut Bank as chief probation officer for the Ninth Judicial District serving Teton Pondora Glacier and Toole counties. Dooley, Pittsburgh native, married to Mary Neeley Low, is a BYU social work graduate and former Pittsburgh Pirates minor leaguer who moved to Shelby in 1950 and has worked with the Credit Bureau of Shelby and Cut Bank. He was sworn in Wednesday.
Funeral services for Mrs. Harry Knudtzon 74 long time Fairfield resident who died Tuesday in the Royal Manor Rest Home in Missoula will be held at 2 p m Friday at Banks Funeral Home in Choteau. Burial will be in the Choteau cemetery. Born in Australia she came to the United States as a child and married in Great Falls in 1914. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Fairfield. Survivors include her husband.
William F. Olsen of Chateau was elected secretary treasurer of the Montana Association of Insurance Agents during the group's 34th annual convention, which concluded Tuesday in Great Falls.
County agent Raymond Kelly reports harvest delayed by rain hail and cold with 50 percent wheat harvest complete. Yields range from 45 to 68 bushels per acre with several reports near 50, while barley lags. Grasshoppers threaten fall crops as seeding begins in scattered areas and frost fear prompts delaying seedings.
The Federal Aviation Agency allocates 19 149 for Choteau airport construction and marking of runways and lighting relocation. Senator Mansfield cites federal funding covering over half the planned improvements as Teton county finalizes a budget including airport funds.

John R. Barber a 25 year old Livingstone native will become editor of the Choteau Acantha starting Monday September 6. He comes from Colfax Washington where he was a reporter for 2 and a half years on the Colfax Gazette and is a 1963 graduate of Montana University School of Journalism after two years at Montana State University. Barber succeeds Bob Amick who has served as editor since November 1961 and will move to Missoula to pursue a master's in journalism.
Admissions to the Chateau pool totaled 18 785 in 1965, averaging 268 daily, Stan Rathman reported, second to 1961’s 21 524. The season featured expanded programs from polywogs to shark club, life saving and water safety courses, and 278 participants in noncompetitive instruction.
