Teton County Draft Board Expands Reach for 19 Year-Olds

The Teton county draft board begins pulling in 19 year-olds to meet monthly quotas. Mrs. John Nordhagen, draft officer at Chateau, announced the change this week. Three county men will report to Butte for September pre-induction.

Teton Board Plans Review of Defense Board Activities

Members of the USDA Teton County Defense Board will meet with the State USDA Defense Board on September 23 in Great Falls to discuss operations and changes in defense procedures. The six planned meetings will cover Bozeman Billings Miles City Wolf Point Great Falls and Missoula. The aim is to maintain readiness for food and agricultural programs during emergencies and to provide radiological monitoring in each county.

Choteau Woman Attends National Lutheran Institute

Mrs J B Huffman of Choteau attended the National Parish Education Institute run by the American Lutheran Church division at Pacific Lutheran University Parkland Washington August 16 18. About 800 church educators joined the Washington event with two other institutes nationwide. Local training schools will be conducted by attendees. The Choteau area institute will be at Faith Lutheran Church Great Falls October 2.

Lions Learn Of R. Kellys Year-Long Trip

Robert Kelly described his year long world journey to Lions Club members. The Chateau High School graduate traveled through 28 countries in Asia and Europe after leaving the Philippines where he had served in the military. He funded most of the trip from a $900 start, using various transport modes and noting greater curiosity from locals than in New York City.

Montana Studies Water Conservancy Districts For State Rights

Montana faces drought driven pressure from states claiming water. The 1965 Legislature created a Legislative Council to study methods for better water use and state rights. Sen. Teton County waterfowl season opened with expanded limits

Hunters in Teton County gain split duck and goose seasons from Oct 9 to Jan 6 with broader limits. Daily bag four ducks and possession eight. special limits for mallards pintails canvasbacks and mergansers. Geese limited to six, with two Canada geese and one Ross's goose per day. Closures apply to Beaverhead Gallatin Madison and parts of Lake Helena and Fresno Reservoir.

Hunter Safety Class Start in Chateau This Week

Teton County health officials announce 1965 hunter safety classes in Chateau beginning Wednesday Sept 15 at 8 PM in Fireman's Hall. Enrollment at Knudtton Lumber Co or with Bob Armstrong at the post office ends before the first meeting. Parents must sign a release and ensure youths aged 12 to 18 pass the NRA Hunter Safety Course per Montana law.

Inquest Planned Into Fatal Dutton Car Crash

County Coroner G L Banks announced a coroner's inquest into a two car crash near Dutton that killed Gilbert Aakre 18 and Dr Gertrude Roskie 57 and injured four others. Injured were Georgia Roskie 20 Kenneth Malley 19 Bob Strahan 16 Jackie Miller 20 all of Conrad.

Swenson Named Managing Engineer at Missoula Lab

Floyd Swenson former Chateau resident is appointed managing engineer of Northern Testing Laboratories new Missoula branch. He previously led as chief engineer for United Prestless Inc. and Montana district structural engineer for the Portland Cement Association, taught civil engineering at Montana State University, and serves as president of the Montana Society of Engineers.

County weighs bond issue for rest home expansion

The State Board of Health told Teton county officials in July that the license for the County Rest Home would stay in effect while county bond plans develop. Petitions calling for a bond election circulated, with 20 percent of qualified electors required to trigger a special vote. Proponents seek funds to acquire land, build an addition, and replace parts of the rest home to serve as a nursing home for the aged, estimated at 150000 dollars. Gale Saks on president of the Chateau Chamber of Commerce noted no contact about meetings with the Cut Bank private home group. The chamber proposed county-wide meetings to present both sides of the rest home issue.

Delay Allowed on Referendum for Wheat Marketing Quota

Public Law 89-82 signed July 24 allows postponing the national wheat marketing quota referendum up to 30 days after Congress adjourns. After the voluntary 1965 program expires, the national program reverts to quota provisions. Quotas would be proclaimed by August 1 with a two thirds vote needed to activate.

Gaines Wheat Price Support Abolished for Undesirable Variety

The U S Department of Agriculture designated Gaines a soft white wheat part of 39 varieties as undesirable for price support under the 1966 program. Gaines grown east of the Continental Divide will not be acceptable. county ASCS committees say growers should plan the 1966 crop year accordingly. Choteau Lions Swim Team Dominates Chinook and Helena Meet

The Choteau Lions swim team piled up points at a noisy meet, crushing Chinook Meadowlark Courtney Club Helena with 311 points to 968 in a relay short event. The squad posted 36 team records as John Breen led with pool marks, and multiple swimmers set medals across junior intermediate and senior divisions. The season wrapped with a Lions Club awards dinner after a mile swim by many swimmers.
