County agent notes increased demand for D A permits allowing half rate freight for feed into drought areas. Potatoes need immediate shipment due to frost risk and cellar shortages. Hay prices rise with expected car shortages. Minnesota and North Dakota hay listed at 25.50 to 34.00 per ton F O B loading points.
The YWCA describes French munitions workers, especially women, facing war’s toll with courage. A secretary recalls Marie from Lille, once a housemaid, who survived bombardment and tragedy to endure for her fiancé and family. Similar tales underscore YWCA clubs aiding morale among workers.
Despite illness the Red Cross reports sewing room activity by date with workers listed. October 15 16 19 18 19 21 22 names appear including Gorham Nagle Burbank Hirshberg Sweat Savory and others.
