County Considers Bond Vote for Seed Loan Aid

County commissioners seek a November bond issue to fund seed loans for needy farmers under the County Seed Loan law. If approved, seed will be stored in county elevators and loans set at five dollars per acre, secured by seed certificates. Eligible applicants may apply at banks or the county agent’s office after November 1.

Chateau Montana October 14 1918 commissioners in special session order a bond election to aid farmers unable to buy seed grain. Resolution passed unanimously and a November 5 1918 vote set, with county clerk instructed to arrange. Judges for the special election named, then adjourned sine die.

County Board of Health Orders Closures for 15 Days

The county health board orders all schools and public gatherings closed for 15 days or until further notice. A state wire cites teachers' examinations on October 24 and 25 are prohibited. A postponed date will be published later.

Mrs J G Jackson Dies After Influenza Pneumonia

Mrs J G Jackson died at her home on Wednesday from pneumonia following Spanish influenza. She was about 40. Born Marie Jane Petch in Yorkshire England she married J G Jackson January 1 1896 at Valpariso Nebraska and later moved to Chateau. Four children survive: Lawrence George Margaret M and Bessie Jane. Funeral services were held today at the home with Rev Haley officiating and burial in the Choteau cemetery.

Deaths Mark Spanish Flu Toll In Chateau District

G H Hotaling aged 33 died of pneumonia after Spanish influenza. He was born in Gilman New Jersey April 1 1885 and worked at Hartman & Hotaling ranch west of town with his brother and Wm Hartman. Survived by wife three children parents three brothers five sisters. Remains to Illinois. Zay Morgan daughter of Mr and Mrs J C Morgan died of pneumonia. Zay born Sunnyside March 4 1908 and later moved to Chateau. Funeral Friday 2:30 at home. State Food: meeting at Bozeman discusses new conservation rules with Alfred Atkinson. No flour sale changes now but urged economy. Luncheons discouraged. cooperation requested with food administration.

Despite school closure our high school pursues Montana state debating league membership. The team plans hard work, possible away trips, and uses university lending libraries to overcome limited resources. The year’s topic supports taxing local revenues based on land values only.

City of Choteau offers 15 dollar reward for crimes

The city offers a 15 dollar reward for information leading to arrests and convictions for firing guns in town breaking insulators tampering with lights windows and appliances at water and fire departments trespassing Sewage disposal plant and related offenses. Contact City Clerk John W Hall with any tips. Also notices two weeks remain to settle subscription accounts at the Acantha. If unpaid by November 1 the paper will stop.
