Chateau residents seeking oiling of adjoining streets must notify the city clerk within two weeks. Homeowners would form special improvement districts to fund oiling next year, as paving could be delayed until spring if not, due to contractor Powell stockpiling gravel from the Dutton road project.
The Chateau city council approved 16 building permits at the October meeting and moved to buy two acres in the Cowgill addition for a new water source. A spring south of the John Richem place will feed the pump house via a twelve inch pipe, possibly laid this fall. Mayor Hentges cited added water for homes and fire protection, with about 300 feet of street work near the spring. Cemetery fence adjustments create space and 100 Colorado spruce trees were ordered. Claims totaled 2077.65 and permits were issued for moving or erecting residences and a garage on several blocks.
The American Legion building at Chateau will gain a new glass and brick front with blue Cararra glass brick and white stucco west side. A 10 by 27-foot warehouse of white brick block will be added to the back. Pittsburg Plate Glass Co. to install blue glass and trimmings. Emil Schultz, Dutton contractor, handles stucco and the front renovation.
Troop 2 B of the Choteau Girl Scouts led by Mrs H J Briscoe were advanced to first class at the annual court of awards in Choteau Monday night. Olga Monkman presented Red Cross cards for summer work and ten girls earned ten badges each for promotion. Ten Brownie girls in two troops were advanced to intermediates and two troops earned proficiency badges.
Ada Hutchinson 40 former Choteau resident and seventh grade teacher died in a Great Falls hospital after a severe stroke and subsequent heart attacks. Funeral services were held in Great Falls with entombment at the mausoleum. She taught at Great Falls Farmington Choteau and Browning and was married to Douglas Hutchinson in 1934. She leaves her husband her mother a sister and two nephews. Pallbearers named.
Teton county road and bridge crews race to catch up after a September storm delayed fall work and caused extensive damage. In October drizzle 26 wooden bridges and culverts failed as grading and repair crews struggle to restore four regular bridges and finish snow fencing and rip rap projects before winter. Maynard notes limited gravel roads complicate eastern county repairs and a motor patrol unit returned to service after August repairs.
Twenty American Legion members will travel to Custer Battlefield cemetery near Hardin Montana to perform the military burial of Sir Robert McDonald USN son of Rod erick B McDonald Chateau who was killed in action in the Pacific during the recent war. Internment is scheduled for Monday with an eight man firing squad and commander six pallbearers two color bearers two color guard and chaplain.
Bandits began at Bynum by looting the Kaufman garage then Dupuyer where Emmett Sullivan's store was stripped of guns and merchandise. They moved to Valier taking over DeVoe Builders service office cash and firearms. A man was seen fleeing near Starbuck drug store. one robber was killed that night.
The 4 H Club Roundup scheduled for this Saturday in Teton County has been postponed likely to November 8 due to multiple conflicting events. Organizers cite scheduling conflicts as the reason for the delay.
Frieda Kathman Arensmeyer 55, wife of Ernest Arensmeyer of Choteau, died Tuesday morning October 21 at her home from a heart ailment. Burial Friday at Choteau Cemetery after services at Trinity Lutheran Church. Survivors include children Dorothy Cook, Esther Fuller, Alvin Rienhardt, Robert, James, Ruth, Donald Arensmeyer and Edna Gunderson, with siblings and relatives across several states. She was a longtime resident of Chateau and Farmington, living in Choteau the past years.
The Rev. T. M. Burleson and his two sons traveled to Sandpoint Idaho last Wednesday to visit Mr. Burleson’s father.
Hunters near Choteau report strong opening of duck and elk seasons with Fairfield marksmen and local residents claiming elk boons in the south country. The Augusta checking station logged 4500 big game hunters in the first week and many locals failed to bag anything beyond whiskers and empty bottles.
Interested Cub Scouts and families are invited to a Tuesday night gathering at the high school gym. The event includes a pre Halloween party and a review of individual achievements and Cub progress, with proceedings starting at 7 30 p m.
The city council voted to discontinue the special permit that kept Cho teau bars and taverns open until 2 A.M. on Saturdays. Closing for all nights is now 12 midnight, making Cho teau the only northern Montana city with 12 o'clock closing.
Walter Dauwalder underwent surgery Saturday in Rochester Minnesota and is reported progressing well. He is expected to stay in hospital about two weeks before returning to Choteau.
The Methodist youth Fellowship hosts a carnival at soboteau Park pavilion Friday October 31. Adults and children pay a small admission to vote for a Carnival Queen, crowned around 9:15 PM with gifts. Local merchants donate prizes. contestants are named by contributors. results published next week. Proceeds fund youth budget items including a trip to a Cleveland Youth Conference, a reef goat purchase, and church plans for Choteau.
James E. Underwood a 1943 Teton County High graduate and World War navigator is at the U S Military Academy New York prep school for nine months before West Point entrance exams. He, with another Keelser Field Miss student, received the honor. son of Edward S Underwood and Mrs Underwood of Great Falls who works at the Montana State School for the Deaf and Blind.
Two title contenders Chateau and Cut Bank meet on Friday under lights in a key showdown. EKIYI Shelby will broadcast the game live from the field with coverage drafted in the Acantha sports section.
Roller skating will not occur at the Chateau Park pavilion next Wednesday night due to ongoing Halloween preparations in progress. Local organizers canceled the session to allow for safe decoration and setup activities.
