A morning fire at the Power Farmer Mercantile Co store in Power caused an estimated loss of $15,000. The blaze began around 9 a.m. likely from an oil burner in the basement and was put out by noon with help from the Great Falls Fire Department. Nearby lumber yard and oil tanks were spared.
The Montana Power Company reduces street lighting maintenance rates in Choteau for an annual saving of 113.58 dollars. Frank Stearns, Chateau manager, cites improved lamp output and better maintenance as the cause. Great Falls will implement the change immediately. Augusta also gains 161.88 dollars yearly under the new schedule.
Former Iowa residents in Teton county will host a Sunday picnic at 1 PM in Chateau Park or the park pavilion depending on weather. Fred Smith chairs the event with Mrs. May Thompson in charge of the program. Coffee and ice cream will be served as the 100th anniversary of Iowa’s founding is noted.
Aragon ballroom resumes Saturday dances for winter with the Rhythm Benders headlining this Saturday. The five member orchestra includes Charles Dahline Mickey O Day John Frinnell George Dirkes and Jesse Peckenham under manager Fred Ritzschke.
Two more dogs died last Thursday from poison spread in Chateau. Owners remain unidentified by authorities. A suspected poisoner has been interviewed and warned to discontinue possible criminal activity.
The Acantha reports a critical labor shortage after machinist operator Tom Caverly left to edit the Valerian. W J Callaghan aids the staff from Great Falls while searches for a replacement continue. Subscribers may see Friday issues or abbreviated papers until staffing normalizes.
E. E. Townsend, longtime Choteau resident, died recently at his home in western Montana. Funeral services were held at Wagner and Campbell Funeral Home in Kalispell. He is survived by his wife Ada Townsend, two daughters, two granddaughters, and four half brothers Ray Frost of Columbia Falls and Jay Earl and Lee Frost in Oregon.
The Chateau Women's Club music and literature group held their meeting at the Methodist church. Mrs. Cora Cohoe chaired the program. The Best String Ensemble led by Mrs. William Fluhr performed, with Mrs. Nick Wren of Great Falls singing Fritz Kreisler's The Old Refrain. A duet by Mrs. Fluhr and Mrs. Eva Stober impressed the audience, followed by a Beaupre cafe dinner.
Ermine Grey a Dallas musician known for marimba saxophone and clarinet performed at Chateau High School in a one hour assembly as the first of six acts sent by the National Assembly Programs Institute. Students paid 15 cents to defray costs. The Home Defense Group meets October 14 at 8 p.m. at Murrie Dial’s home with hostesses Beverly Davidson and Marge Hinman.
State Fire Marshal Jack Carney and Anaconda Fire Chief Henry Quane visited Choteau for Fire Prevention Week. They told Lions, Keller and students about fire safety, praised schools with few hazards but warned about single stair exits in some Chateau apartments. A surprise fire drill emptied the grade school in 38 seconds, and questionnaires were given to students on home fire safety.
Mrs. Kenneth G McLean Smith known as Birdie McDonald a pioneer woman of Teton County dies at 69 in Riverside California Information reaching her nephew Denzel McDonald states she was born Memphis Missouri May 1877 and came to Montana with her family Her survivors include two daughters Mrs Merle D Smith Mrs Howard Bowers two sons Sterling and Donald McLean three grandchildren Stars Spencer Miller and J B Oliver The late husband Kenneth G McLean managed Chateau Mercantile Co and died in 1900
Lora Corbett daughter of Mr and Mrs Bryan Corbett of Chateau and Del mer Olander son of Mr and Mrs Gus Olander of Moses Lake Wash united in marriage at the Methodist church in a double ring service officiated by Rev H L Engdahl. The couple will reside in Moses Lake.
American Legion auxiliary members gathered at Legion hall for a large turnout Monday. District president Mrs. Rondebush of Fort Benton spoke, received a gift from the unit, and an original poem was read. Five new members were welcomed, delegates elected for the Fort Benton meeting, and a lunch followed with a decoratively adorned hall.
The Chateau Flying service reports a cluster plane reconverted to a trainer and stationed at Great Falls for student instruction and charter flights under inspection. Bob Walter mier, base operator, notes all first class students have soloed.
Carl Francis Kochman age 56 prominent stockman and farmer from Bynum Montana died Monday in Hot Springs after a sudden heart attack. He had been recovering from illness and traveled for rest. Funeral set for Friday at 10 at Joseph's Parish Chateau with military honors tentative. Survived by Nellie Mae Burke wife. children George F. Kochman and Virginia Kochman Luinstra. siblings Julius Tillie Annie Bertha Lena George. former mail carrier and World War I veteran with 91st Division.
Choteau meets Great Falls reserves at home Friday night at 8. The Reserves beat Choteau by one touchdown earlier this season. Choteau last Friday defeated Shelby 7 to 0 with Rose Hinman and Jackson starring.
Four Montanans won honors at the Madison Square Garden rodeo in New York City last week. Oral Zumwalt led by winning the calf roping contest. Phil Mannix of Augusta placed third in steer wrestling. Floyd Peters of Browning also took third in calf roping, while Bud Linderman of Red Lodge won both bareback bronc riding and saddle bronc riding.
The Chateau city council approved issuance and sale of 55 500 water bonds and 25 500 sewer bonds after a regular meeting. Notice of sale on December 2 was approved. revenue bonds were discussed but not issued. The 10 mill tax levy was deemed illegal until bond debt is incurred, with payment levy planned for July 1947 budget. Construction contracts to follow bond sale.
Former Supreme Court Justice Leif Erickson opened his 1946 statewide campaign in Fairfield with a robust defense against accusations of communism socialism or pro Soviet leanings. He blasted opponents smear tactics as false and politically motivated while urging support for the Democratic party and its progressive program. He cited the Montana Citizens Council as an example of such groups forming before elections and fading after votes are cast.
All veterans from both world wars are asked to meet at the Legion Hall at 9 a.m. tomorrow in uniform if possible for the military funeral of Carl Kochman announced by Ted Halvorson commander of the Chateau American Legion.
