Sunday column recalls a mudbound stretch as hunters and two boys battle eleven hours to reach the Paul Kropp ranch. The author frets at wastage on roads, criticizes public paving contracts, and urges accountability from state officials amid prison title selling scandals.
Chateau handed Shelby its first defeat of the season by a 6-0 score as a stingy defense and a late 25 yard pass from Rose to Upserweon produced the game's lone touchdown. Bill Sabo and Clark Iaboday anchored Shelby's line while Harris showcased breakaway runs before the miscue on offense ended Shelby's bid late. Chateau remains undefeated in district play with two wins as Shelby prepares to face Great Falls.
The Chautauqua committee voted to cancel this year's event due to unsettled weather delaying fall work and hindering community number preparation. Several cast members left for defense jobs and 1942 defense program sign ups will require county meetings and farm plans. The committee hopes for an excellent all county Chautauqua in 1942 if communities begin now.
The city boxing club, coached by Tommy DeCastro, will stage its first season matches on Saturday at Sunburst. Veteran members Keith Vick, Don Amundson, Cliff Sabo, Bob Arensmeyer, Richard Vick and Bob Christman join peers including the coach’s brother, with plans for two out of town cards monthly and later events in Choteau.
A speaker thanks the youths for returning a borrowed bat battery to Chick's in Chateau. They dried off at home and the speaker notes if adults were involved, they would have had to search for it. The tone is thankful and light.
Great Falls physician Dr. E M Porter was fined 27 50 for shooting a duck before the season near Farmington. Game warden Walt Everin and Justice McDonald presided. Porter and his son were seen with guns by a ten year old who recorded the license number of Porter's car. Porter confessed to the violation.
Dr Martin Hall German exile and journalist will speak October 16 at 11 am in the high school auditorium under National Assemblies for National Defense. Admission 10c. Hall discusses life under Nazi rule and contrasts it with democratic America, drawing on his experiences in Germany Paris London and the United States.
Grade school pupils enjoyed a brief vacation as the teachers institute gathered at the Chateau grade school. Nearly all county elementary teachers attended while Ralph Calkins Harry Norton Douglas Gold and Stan Teel led sessions on recreation curriculum and music. County Superintendent Inez Eckford ran the program.
Public invited to a British Relief Silver Tea hosted by the Ladies' Guild of the Episcopal church at Mrs. C. K. Malone's home on Monday Oct 20 from 2 to 5 and 7 30 to 9 30. An door prize will be awarded and mailed to the winner. Attendees may consult Madame V and Madame Rosita from Romany for past present and future.
Teton county farmers receive a briefing from the county AAA committee detailing discussions and actions to raise wheat acreage. The report covers past meetings, committee members, correspondence with state and federal offices, and upward adjustments promised for 1941 and 1942.
The Teton County Weed Supervisors announce available burning equipment for ditch banks and infested areas. Requests should be made at the county agent's office in Choteau. Equipment is provided with a burner operator. fuel costs are paid by the farmer or ditch company. Cost runs to a few cents per square rod. Burning helps control noxious weeds by oil residue and will be repeated next growing season.
The 4-H dairy foods demonstration team from Chateau and Collins, Eileen Reiquam and Audrey Lawson, won county and state honors and will compete in Memphis Tennessee. Their leader Evelyn Zeigler and home agent Margaret Conlon accompany them. They planned a route via the Black Hills and Minneapolis. Their 27 minute presentation featured sour cream in baking and dairy food uses, with dishes including sour cream muffins soup and sour cream raisin pie.
Elk deer and bear hunting starts October 15 in all of Teton County but closing dates are unsettled. The state game commission has not issued a final closing date. Local warden Walt Everin has asked for clarification, with sources listing Oct 15 to Nov 15, or extending to December 1 or December 31 in some areas.
Funeral services for Maude Austad 65 longtime Bole Fairfield resident were held at Community church Fairfield. Rev. Tate officiated with Banks Funeral Home in charge. Born in Sparta Wisconsin October 14 1875 she moved to Teton County early in life surviving husband and two sons Merle and Max Bundy.
Defense Savings E Bonds can be redeemed at face value and are not negotiable. Arnold Han usa of the Teton County Defense Savings Committee notes that Liberty Bonds were negotiable and often sold for less than par, while Defense Bonds are guaranteed to be redeemed after sixty days and will grow with time, for example an 18.75 dollar bond becomes 25 dollars after ten years.
