Water Bank Program Set For Next Year
The Water Bank program to preserve wetlands for migratory waterfowl will begin in 1972. Joel P. Antrim, chairman of the Montana ASC committee, says payments will compensate farmers who maintain wetlands and avoid draining or destroying their character. The program aims to cut new land entering production and retire some land, while reducing runoff erosion and improving water quality. Congress has authorized ten million dollars for ten year agreements with eligible wetland owners and operators, with ASC administering and Soil Conservation Service providing planning help. Further details come in 1972.
