Cooke City Montana A Mining Camp With Big Ups and Downs
The story traces Cooke City at Yellowstone’s northeast edge from its 1870 discovery by hardy prospectors to repeated boom bust cycles. Obstructed by Congress, a railway, and park boundaries, the town survived with mining bands, saloons, and rugged pioneers, awaiting renewed fortunes amid ongoing prospecting and tourism.
