Devastating Rocky Mountain Winds Hit Choteau Area
Hurricane force winds roared from the mountains on Monday causing extensive damage in Choteau and surrounding towns. Snow followed by Tuesday morning, six inches in Choteau, larger amounts in Bynum and Pendroy. Power lines went down at 4:50 pm plunging the city into blackout. Oertel's Texaco roof peeled back and collapsed, leaving the service area damaged while the office survived. Les Certel reported closing the station minutes before the roof blew off. Insurance coverage was partial for Oertel.

Early cost sharing urged for 1963 tree plantings
Chairman Lyall Schaefer of the county ASCS urges farmers to file cost sharing requests now for next year. Technical assistance from Soil Conservation Service and Forest Service will be provided and trees can be ordered this winter with ACP backing. Cost sharing can cover up to 80 percent of land prep, trees, planting, and fencing but not exceed 125 dollars per acre, with approvals after January 1, 1963.

Wind hits trailer, gym ailing in Montana event
A trailer owned by W E Whealy was blown apart by strong winds in Montana. Whealy warned his wife and three children to exit moments before the collapse. A Whealy camper toppled a John Hancock trailer and Kurt George’s trailer shifted with minor damage. City cop Leon Gollehon reported the high school gym roof buckling with blocks pushed out and cracks spreading. School officials and contractors rapidly secured the building with draglines and cables.
