Ballots listing ASC nominees were mailed to eligible voters in Teton county. Voters must return ballots to the county ASC office by November 30 or in person. Each voter marks five preferred candidates, candidates with the most votes will be elected and take office January 1, 1957.
Fourteen Air Force ROTC cadets from Montana State College join the Eu gene G. DeCosse squadron of the Amok Air Society at a Baxter Hotel initiation dinner. Maj. George Pelter of the 407th Strategic Fighter Wing speaks on the SAC mission. New initiates include Charley Dudley Bozeman Fred Walter Billings Raymond Danielson San Mateo George McCrea Drummond Cummings Boseman Falls Ronald Paige Twin Bridges.
A Bynum student at Washington State College was initiated into a campus fraternity on November 14. The event marks a traditional rite and reflects campus social life and student involvement at WSC.
The Chateau Bulldogs schedule ten home games starting Nov 30 at the local gym with a Dec 1 home match against Geraldine. An invitational tourney is set for Dec 14–15 in Chateau with Fairfield Conrad Valier. Away games include Deer Lodge Anaconda Central Fort Benton Shelby Walter Conrad Cut Bank Sunburst Browning Fairfield Valier Stanford. Preliminaries begin at 7 p.m.
The Montana Fish and Game Commission discussed expanded plans for the state hatchery system at a Helena meeting. Lewistown and Great Falls hatcheries will be enlarged with plans nearly complete, aiming to create the largest Lewistown facility. Fromberg and Anaconda stations have been expanded to meet restocking demand after eradication of rough fish.
Over the last two months the high school biology class visited Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks to study animal and plant life while the chemistry class toured Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park for a two hour session explaining stalactite and stalagmite formation. Gary Jacobson Harvey Hanson and Walter Gebhart conducted demonstrations across science, chemistry and physics using 35 mm slides to illustrate a broader evolution of a theory and eventful science topics.
Glacier Park operators of the Dutton Teton Tavern were sued for 35000 by Bud Linderman in Cascade County District Court Great Falls. Linderman a rodeo performer alleges an August 11 1956 action damaged his reputation and credit and caused public disgrace. He contends he spent 24 hours jailed posted a 200 bond and the case was dismissed in his favor at trial. Linderman also accused the defendants of malicious conduct and seeks 35000 plus 10000 exemplary damages. The justice court complaint against Linderman dates August 11 charging a 20 check dated October 13 1955 drawn on Red Lodge’s First National Bank. Authorities say Linderman was briefly jailed in Billings. He and attorney John M. McCarver appeared at the September hearing.
District Court Judge R M Hattersley schedules Lee O Smart of Spokane for trial Monday Jan 7 on first degree murder charges in the April 29 1956 shooting of Charles D Ward a Colorado salesman. Judge Hattersley also sets Friday Jan 11 for Donald G Perkins of Portland Ore to face possession of stolen property charges connected to the Fairfield burglary and Silver Dollar Bar loot. Eighty five prospective jurors are drawn for the January session.
Seventeen new members were admitted at the Teton Oldest Settlers annual meeting at the IOOF hall on Thursday Nov 15. New joins include Art and Ruth Wells Ben and Martha Peden A B Guthrie Jr and wife John and Mary Lane Elmer and Helen Dial John and Mary Zimmerman plus several others. The group set membership criteria at thirty years in state twenty years in county and age fifty one.
Taylor Motor Co signs a Willys Motors franchise to sell Jeep models and provide parts and service from Chateau. Key staff includes Burr Huffman Everett Sassa Taylor and four mechanics as the dealership markets the Universal Jeep Jeep 1 ton pickup and Utility Wagon among off road utility vehicles.
Joe Anderson announced Courtesy Chevrolet Co will be known as Anderson Chevrolet after he bought out partner Kenny Thompson on Sept 22 becoming sole owner. The dealership traces to Logan Hatch who bought in 1953 from Robert Holt, who had run it since 1951. Vic Pelletier operated it as Pelletier Chevrolet from 1941 to 1950.
A special Mass will be held Thanksgiving Day at St Josephs Church in Chateau at 8 30 AM with the Junior choir performing. Father Gannon will deliver the sermon titled Let Us Give Thanks to the Lord Our God. A nation wide clothing collection for overseas relief is being conducted this week in Catholic churches.
Funeral services were held for Lula Rose Fowler at the First Methodist church with Rev. Grant S. Moore. Burial followed in Chateau cemetery. Mrs Fowler died Sunday after a lingering illness at Teton Memorial hospital. Born October 6, 1878 in Camargo Illinois, she married James R. Fowler on December 25, 1898. The couple moved to Teton county in 1937, living in Fairfield then Chateau. Survived by her husband, a son Charles N. Fowler of Choteau, sister Ames Marles of Elgin Illinois, brothers Daniel A. Martin of Camargo and Alvin Martin of Northern Illinois. She was a member of the Choteau First Methodist Church. Casket bearers: Leonard Sheble, Art Tesch, George B. Glade, Bill Anderson, Fred Smith, William Van Setten.
The Teton Chapter of the American Red Cross held its annual meeting in the court room. Rev. A B Gravdal was named president with C Gibson Monkman as vice president and E M Bridenstine as secretary treasurer. The group set plans for the March 1957 fund appeal, blood program, first aid, and a county swimming program. Mr and Mrs John Nordhagen visited Bozeman over the weekend.
Stella Mae Gebhart married Ora G Knowlton in a candle light ceremony at Trinity Lutheran church with Rev. A Bernani Gravdal officiating. The bride wore Alencon lace and nylon net gown with a lavender orchid bouquet. attendants included Barbara Ann Campbell and Joan Stillman. A reception followed and gifts were arranged by Monte Rae Anderson and Mrs Larry Deltno.
The Chateau public schools hosted open houses during National Education Week drawing about 100 parents at the high school and 225 at the grade school. Teachers explained goals and methods in each room, with a new suggestion box and a post event coffee hour.
The Chateau Methodist church holds its annual bazaar on Saturday December 1 at the church parlors. The bazaar opens at 2 pm with coffee tea and cookies served by the ladies. The sale features fancy work baked goods and other items from the Woman's Society of Christian Service. A turkey dinner with all the trimmings will be served from 5 pm.
The Chateau Woman's Club will meet Tuesday November 27 at 7 30 p m in the Methodist church.
Cornelis Sonneveld 84 died Friday at a local hospital. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Josephs Catholic Church officiated by Rev. Thomas Gannon. Sonneveld born Oct 14 1872 Castricum Holland came to the U S in 1913 and lived near Chateau. He lived in Cowgill and Cal Binf ord areas before retirement. Buried at Chateau cemetery with pallbearers John Richem Cedric Schroeder William Van Setten Joe Lucier Jerry Breen and Walter Scott. Survivors include two great nieces Vincentia and Gustina Geels of Alkmaar Holland.
Postmaster C G Monkman launches 1956 Mail Early for Christmas drive as Dec 25 delivery goal nears. He notes 167 million Americans and urges the public, especially women who choose cards and gifts, to mail early to ensure timely arrival. Continued on Pag
