The November 6 general election produced 3,420 ballots cast by 3,784 registered voters for a 90.38 percent turnout. Clerk Gordon E. Monkman notes this nearly ties the all time high from four years earlier at 90.53 percent with 3,793 ballots. A tabulation of several elections follows.
ASC ballots to elect community committeemen for 1957 will be mailed Friday November 16 1956 to Teton county farmers and ranchers. Producers have until December 5 to return ballots by mail or in person to the county ASC office. Envelopes are provided and voting includes five choices with space for write ins. The top vote recipient in each community becomes chairman and delegates to the county convention.
The Teton County Sheriff investigates break ins at Power High School Friday night and Dutton High School Sunday night. Prowlers pried open a classroom window to enter Power. only a half box of candy bars was taken and files and the safe were ransacked. A prior Power break-in in 1960 caused $90 cash loss.
Paul Dickover former Henderson councilman and store owner died in Nevada. He moved to Pittman eight years ago from Montana and previously served on the old town board. Survived by son Jimmy and twin sons John and Bob Dickover, all of Hawthorne, plus a granddaughter. He had been active in local civic affairs since the 1950s.
Choteau City Council announces potential forming of a sewer district covering blocks 1 2 5 6 and Cowgill addition tracts A and B. Installation cost is 9000 dollars per lot or parcel within the district, with charges assessed by area excluding streets and public places. City bears a portion of the cost as determined.
In the Morris ranch area near Chateau two weekend fires caused about ten thousand dollars in losses. A Saturday blaze destroyed four buildings on the Morris ranch while a Sunday fire gutted a Hansen Dairy two-stall garage. Most cattle were saved and insurance covered part of the damage.
Russell E. Heline 47, a Great Falls and former Dutton lineman, died Sunday at a veterans hospital after treatment since August. Born March 17 1908 in Minneapolis, he lived in Great Falls since 1942 and worked as an electrician. He was a member of the Great Falls Elks Lodge. Survivors include his widow Clara and Mr and Mrs Peter Heline of Great Falls plus nephews. Funeral services were held at Croxford's with Rev Lowell Swantz officiating.
The veteran mail carrier completed his 9980th trip after 370000 miles over a rural Farmington Agawam route. He began Aug 30, 1920 with postmaster Henry Davidson and served about 50 patrons. The route grew to 79.7 miles after expansions in 1946 and 1948, making it one of the state’s longest. Notable moments include a car destroyed by a grass fire and a 1948 bogging incident with a rescue by a Passmore area party.
The 37th annual Montana Farm Bureau meeting runs November 25 to 28 with delegates from 29 county bureaus and over 3,000 farm and ranch families. George Diehl of East Helena will lead the sessions, assisted by directors Howard Lord Dan Lovell Ted Sorenson and Mrs Paul Reese. The Women’s Committee begins with registration and a vesper service on Sunday and a Monday meeting led by Mrs Reese.
The Chateau Acantha will publish a day early on Wednesday November 21 to observe Thanksgiving. Advertising copy should be ready by Monday and news copy by Tuesday. correspondents are asked to take notice.
Students at Chateau high school held a mock election on Tuesday November 6 showing President Eisenhower leading Stevenson 129 to 45. Airman James Howard and his wife Mrs. Howard and their son Danny arrived in Choteau last Thursday to visit his parents Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Howard and other relatives. Mrs. Howard’s mother Mrs. Bessie Edwards accompanied them after two weeks in Urbana.
In a terse notice, Mrs. Ted Malvorson is identified alongside Miss Via Limstrem and Cat Banx as part of a civic appointment roster for the city administration, with Domne Ot noted in connection to the mayoral post.
The Choteau City Council schedules a special election for November 29 to submit a $15 million revenue bond proposal for rehabilitation and extension of the city water system to qualified voters.
Wheat buyers should demand evidence that wheat is penalty free or face penalties on purchases. Leo S. Kolstad notes Nov 15 is the final date to settle excess wheat and to request downward adjustments. Stored excess may be kept with bonds or delivered to the Secretary for relief, with various options and deadlines outlined.
Assistant Secretary Earl L. Butz announced that Soil Bank Conservation cost-sharing mirrors the Agricultural Conservation Program. Both programs are run by the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service with state and county committees. Practices include vegetative cover, planting trees, building dams ponds for livestock and irrigation water, with wildlife benefits emphasized when conservation is equal.
The first school year concert unfolds Friday in the high school auditorium featuring the band and mixed chorus. Selections include Mozart Overture La Finta Giardiniera, Autumn Leaves, Amparito Roca, and The Lord Bless You and Keep You. Admission is 75 cents for adults and 25 cents for students. all are urged to attend.
