Local Taxpayers Pay Less Than Many In State Says Report

A Montana Taxpayers Association report shows Chateau has the highest property tax rate increase in the state with a 49.60 percent rise to 117.02 per 1 000 of taxable value, while Sidney records 159 63 and Cut Bank 75 60. The breakdown assigns 26 to county taxes, 53 52 to school taxes, and 37 to city taxes per 1 000, reflecting bond-funded improvements and higher teacher salaries. Continued on page eight.

Railroading Death After Fight Ends Milwaukkee Bridge Worker Dies

Adam Devedes a 65 year old Milwaukee Road bridge worker from Chicago died Monday at Chateau after a fist fight with Phil Leahy another railroad worker. A coroner jury ruled death from cerebral hemorrhage due to the blows given more than a week earlier. Leahy was released on 1000 bond pending arraignment set for tomorrow. Devedes had worked 24 years with the Milwaukee division and had been stationed at Chateau recently.

Farm Program Planning Meeting Set in Chateau

In Teton county a planning meeting at the courthouse in Chateau on Tuesday November 18 will gather two or more representatives from each community. The 10 am start aims to outline an agricultural program focused on 1948 work, with Marjorie Downs and Eric B. Wilson of the state Extension office Bozeman joining alongside local county agents.

Falls Scout Speaks At District Scout Banquet Here

Draper Hurd an Eagle scout from Great Falls spoke at a district banquet at the Beaupre hotel Monday night. He described the world jamboree in Paris and the trip overseas. About 23 scouts from Dutton and Choteau attended. Choteau earned a second class badge. Next district meeting set for Dutton on December 15.

Dutton Resident Dies in Train Collision at Conrad

Philip J. Anslinger 71 of Dutton died at Conrad after a train struck him at the Dutton crossing Nov 4 while he carried the mail. He was unconscious at a Conrad hospital until his death. Funeral services were held in Conrad with burial in Spokane. Survived by wife Lucille, daughter Hermania, son Harry, three brothers, three sisters, and granddaughter Margie. He had been a mail carrier and earlier ran a liquor store and barber shop in Dutton.

Beck Woman Passes Away At Rochester

Selma Nelson 52 wife of Alfred Nelson of Power died at Colonial hospital Rochester Minnesota on Sunday morning November 9 after a brief illness. Born in Long Prairie 1895 she moved to Montana with parents Carl and Berndt in 1912. Married February 22 1921 to Alfred Nelson a Beck area farmer she had lived in Beck for 26 years. Survivors include husband son LeRoy and several brothers and sisters and many relatives.

Beaupre Relative Among Air Victims In Alaska Tragedy

Lizette Dorsh 71, sister of the late Dr. Henri Beaupre of this city, is among 18 aboard the Pan American World Airways clipper when it crashed near Mount Tamgas on Annette Island Alaska. She had recently visited Chateau and stayed with relatives before flying through Fairbanks Seattle Spokane San Francisco. Her husband A F Dorsh is Fairbanks jailer and the family lived in Great Falls Sumatra Fromberg. Dorsh's burial was in Forest Lane cemetery Seattle.

Chateau Bulldogs clinched the district 14 football championship with a 25 to 18 win over the Fairfield Eagles. They will face the Malta Mustangs in Malta for the north Montana title, leaving by bus for the showdown after finishing 8 wins 0 losses and outscoring opponents 161 to 32.

Magazine Drive Nets $540.65 for Chateau Students

Chateau seventh and eighth grades completed an 11 day magazine drive from Oct 27 to Nov 7. Total taken was $540.65 with $191.00 to the school and students for prizes and needs. Seventh grade led with $339.15 and will receive a party or dance from the eighth grade. Top sellers included Katherine Munson Frank Olsen Claudia Engdahl Betty Jo Jaconetty and Dick Swartzel.

Chateau High School Band Concert and Operetta

Chateau High School presents a two part program on November 25 at the auditorium. The junior and senior bands open with a concert followed by the glee club operetta Mountain Music featuring Singin Bill and other mountaineers. Band Booster Club meets after the show and tickets are on sale at Chateau Drug Co and Malone's Pharmacy.
