The Choteau High School construction by Watters Construction Co. of Helena is moving well under foreman Harry Hanson. The project aims for completion by January with 26 workers currently on site and up to 50 during peak periods.
Choteau and Augusta observe Veterans Day with most local stores closing this Saturday November 11. A joint potluck dinner and dance by the Choteau and Augusta American Legion Posts will be held at the Chateau Legion hall. The event marks the 50th anniversary of U S entry into World War I and calls for displaying the U S flag and honoring all who have served.
The council granted Ralph Dale a sign permit to operate a plastic sign business from his residence on Hazletts Second Addition. A zoning board decision Augmented the approval with nearby property owners, clearing the path for council consent. Other actions included a garage permit for Pete Baumgartner and police car fleet planning.
Heavy winds at the Teton Pass ski area moved a 20,000 pound chalet about 30 feet on a Tuesday afternoon. Workers Bob Dunn Frank Crabtree and B C Colbenson were on site. Colbenson inside reported a smooth ride and no injuries. The structure sat on three timbers and was not anchored. A Knudtzon Lumber Co. representative gave the estimate. The Civic Social Club meeting at Mrs Elmer Knaff home with co host Mrs George Morey set for November 14 at 2 pm.
CHS started basketball drills Monday as Coach Charles Peck led conditioning and fundamentals for most of the week. With three weeks to prep before the Nov. 25 game vs Fort Benton Longhorns, Peck fields five seniors and seven juniors, plus new varsity players Tim McCartney Paul Beaudeau Ron Lensing Lance Krone. The team aims for strong rebound and balance, with early events including the Choteau Invitational and Browning Invitational, eight home games priced at six dollars for season tickets.
A civil defense emergency preparedness conference focusing on disaster contingency planning is set for Thursday, Nov. 16, at the American Legion Club in Cha teau. Montana State University Bozeman coordinates with federal and state civil defense offices. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. with talks on citizen roles and nuclear protections, a noon luncheon at the Cornell Hotel, and an afternoon workshop inviting participation on local disaster planning.
John Arnold, chairman for the Chateau Jaycees, reports slow entries for the Teton County Junior Miss contest open to all four county high schools. The pageant, moved up a month, requires completed applications by Friday, November 10, with the event at Chateau High School on November 24 and the winner advancing to the state contest in Kalispell.
The Teton County Democratic Club meeting in Choteau was postponed from Nov 14 to Mon Nov 27. Publicity chairman James Stephens says the session will be in the Teton county courthouse court room.
Chateau merchants push a property tax initiative to place on the ballot requiring 22 478 signatures from registered voters in two fifths of counties by July. The Montana Retail Association supports the plan while the Montana Taxpayers Association warns of revenue loss and potential higher real property taxes.
Newell and Mrs Frita Newco former Shelby residents opened a men and women's western apparel shop beside Montarea Power Co. The Newells moved to Chateau in September to enroll their son Greg at the elementary school. The store plans Levi blue denim casual wear Texas brand boots and other branded items with men and boys shoes clothing gloves and overshoes for all. Stock is arriving daily and a grand opening is planned once full merchandise is available.
A truck carrying 58 head of cattle went off a curve north of Bums injuring two and killing 11 cows. Driver Oliver K. Davis and passenger Lester Lane were hospitalized. Five cows were butchered at the scene. Other incidents include a car wreck near Chateau injuring Floyd Roberts and a DWI charge. Four October accidents in Teton County noted.
Teton County Sheriff Albert Becker transferred Charles Bates 21 from Fargo to Choteau where he will stand trial on bad check charges. Bates is also wanted by the U S Government for desertion from the army and AWOL for about a year. He faces two more detainers from Valley City NC and Cascade County on bad checks with trial tentatively set for December 17 in district court at Choteau.
Chateau fire chief Robert Erickson announced four openings for firefighters aged 21 to 45. Applicants should leave their name with James Sulgrove, city clerk, this week.
Montana researchers report two barley crops harvested in the huntley Branch Experiment Station in 1967. J L Krall says early Bettes were seeded April 12 and harvested July 17 with 389 moisture percent and 86.2 bushels per acre dry matter. later Betzes planted again July 17 and harvested Oct 10 at 43.6 percent moisture and 484 bushels per acre dry matter. Krall notes the success needs suitable varieties and farming practices and cites a long growing season and irrigation advances as keys.
The Teton Women Republican Club will meet Friday November 17 at 2 pm at the Cornell Hotel. There will be election of officers, door prize, and coffee served. All interested persons are invited to attend.
Lee Corbett of Chateau and Lawrence Trebesch of Dutton, both registered Angus breeders, were chosen to represent Montana members at the American Angus Association annual meeting in Chicago on November 20. Montana ranks among the top states for Angus registrations with the association, which lists headquarters in St Joseph Missouri and counts 51 000 active life members and 12 000 junior members. In the 1967 fiscal year the registry recorded 404 348 bulls and heifers registered and 304 682 cattle transferred ownership.
Mr and Mrs Ernest White and their daughter Libby visited his mother Mrs Jessie White from Monday through Wednesday. The Whites were en route to Poplar Montana where they have leased a cafe and will be taking over the management of it.
The Chateau Bulldogs ended the 1967 season with a 7 1 record overall and 5 1 in conference play. They piled up 228 points while allowing 83, averaging 28 points for and 10 against per game. Injuries slowed the offense after a hot start, but wins remained steady through most of the year.
