In Teton County heated debate centers on the County Rest Home and how to fund improvements. Supporters argue for better care while opponents argue over who should implement changes and bear the costs. The county faces an obligation to act.
Teton county farmers and ranchers must file nominations by Monday Nov 5. Petitions require 10 or more eligible voters. Nominees must meet ASC election rules and reside in the community. Ballots mailed mid November will list nominees and allow write-ins. Each community will elect a three member committee with two alternates.
More than 60 members welcomed Mrs. Hope Gilbert president of the Rebekah Assembly of Montana to Queen Rebekah Lodge No 31. Mrs. Gladys Baquet presented a corsage and gift. Visitors included Mrs. Edith Baldwin Mrs. Ina Richter Mrs. Nellie Swain and Mrs. Florence Schrock. A dinner followed and the Rebekah Degree was conferred on two members. A luncheon closed the event with a song by Mrs. Dorothy Allen and Mrs. Lois Crabtree. Next Chateau lodge meeting is Wednesday Nov 7 with roll call.
Greenfield hosts a Democratic coffee session at Greenfield Community Hall on Saturday November 3 from 1 to 5 p.m. Voters will meet Democratic candidates, said Mrs. Wilma Mayer chair of the Teton County Democratic Central Committee.
About 200 Legionnaires and auxiliaries are expected at the Fairfield district No. 8 meeting on Saturday. Delegates include S. W. Lindseth Al Hensley Gordon Monkman Chris Beck and Jerry Breen from Unit No. 6. Chateau auxiliary delegates are Mrs Joyce Robinson Mrs Edith Peterson and Mrs Jane Gronberg. Representatives from 11 posts in north central Montana will attend along with Paul Kropp of Choteau. Separate sessions precede a joint banquet with registration in the morning and meetings starting at 1 p.m.
Floyd A Joramo of Choteau has joined Montana State University Missoula freshman football. The 1962 Choteau High School graduate stood 6 2 and 195 pounds, earned three letters in football and track, made all conference and played in the East West Shrine game. He helped MSU Cubs win their first game against Western Montana College and then lost to MSC Bobkittens.
Teton county residents head to the polls on Tuesday November 6 for 15 races two constitutional amendments and a county bond issue. About 3699 electors can vote with heavy campaigning noted. Girl Scout Troop 118 offers a babysitting service from 4 to 8 p.m. to help Chateau mothers vote call 466 2477. The congressional race between Batin and Graybill is expected to be close along with other state and county contests.
A flood of letters argues over a $200000 county rest home bond measure. Supporters urge public operation as more economical. opponents question costs, demand current data, and present privately funded plans. Voters face Nov. 6 decision.
At the last regular meeting the Dutton Community Club planned a rifle range in the old gym for learning safe shooting. A committee of Art Habel Reg Wilson Jim Cheetham and Frank Joch Jr was named to organize it. Roller skating started Sunday Oct 28 with time slots 4 to 6 p m for grades 1 6 and 7 to 9 p m for older students and adults. About 85 youths take dancing lessons sponsored by the club. New officers elected include president Harold Hensley vice president Bill Briggs schedule director Maxine Hensley financial advisor Rev Ted Cox treasurer Henry Rosholt and secretary Margaret Weeks.
Bryan Corbett and Sons continue winning with Corbett Angus at the Cow Palace Exposition in San Francisco where Keifer earned reserve senior champion and the farm took two firsts a second and a third. In Portland at the Pacific International Livestock Exposition 173 Angus from 23 herds were shown with reserve senior champion bull and multiple top placings. Participants included Bryan Don Corbett Dwight Winchester Lee Corbett and Winchester.
The Trinity Lutheran Church in Chateau will hold a lutefisk dinner on Saturday November 3 in the church basement. Serving starts at 4 30 p m with lutefisk potatoes and Norwegian cookies on offer.
The Farmers Union Central Exchange Soil Service Center in Fairfield opens with an open house on Wednesday November 7 to showcase its soil fertility program. Local farmers will learn about Prescription Mix customized blends, soil testing, and cost effective fertilizer delivery via cooperative networks across Montana and the Midwest.
The Great Merlin, a two hour comedy mystery act, comes to Choteau High School auditorium Saturday November 3 at 8 p.m. The Jaycees sponsor the touring family show featuring hypnosis and escape tricks including a hypnotized water drinker and onion eater, Houdini box, jacket escape, and the giant guillotine. Merlin is billed as one of the best on tour in the United States and will appear in tails and turban.
The Chateau High School senior class will present its annual three act farce Take Your Medicine by Felicia Metcalfe. Performances start Friday at 8 pm in the school auditorium with Gary Richem Janet Stromswold and Don Reiner starring. Tickets are 60 cents general admission and 90 cents for reserved seats.
The Choteau Chapter of the American Red Cross holds a blood drawing Monday November 12 at the Choteau Methodist Church. Drive chair Joyce Curtis urges donors to plan to give.
The 51st annual dinner and dance of Teton County Oldest Settlers will be Nov 8 at the American Legion and Odd Fellow halls in Chateau. Festivities begin 6:30 with dinner and a program then a dance. Eligible members must be over 51, have 30 years Montana residency and 20 years in Teton County.
Final results for the Teton District Boy Scout fund drive were released by drive chairman Tom McCartney. Chateau led with $953.43, Dutton $770.25, Fairfield $710.55, and Iséas with an unreadable total. The district aimed for $3,000 but found the overall result satisfactory and McCartney thanked workers and contributors. Special thanks were given to Jack Thompson Power Cr Weeks Dutton Glen Logsdiller Fairfield and Bob Nauck Choteau, all community chairmen.
Roy Talmage, Chateau accountant for the last two and one half years, announced his acceptance of an appointment with the Internal Revenue Service as an agent in the auditing division. He sold his accounting business to E C Christiansen of Conrad and left for San Francisco for months before a permanent duty in Havre. Mrs Talmage and family will remain in Choteau for the present.
Chateau public schools observe American Education Week with an open house on Thursday Nov 15 at 7 p.m. for all parents. The high school offers 15 minute teacher appointments. longer meetings possible on other days starting at 7 p.m. Call next week to schedule. Seniors may see the guidance director about college plans. A reading machine will be demonstrated in the auditorium. Coffee served in the cafeteria.
Choteau coach Chuck Peck plans first practice Monday November 5 with 25 to 30 players. Graduation cost two starters, aims to fill gaps. Team schedules 20 games including home dates vs Fort Benton November 24 and Cut Bank December 14. Road trips feature Big Sandy November 23 and Fort Benton December 21. Invitational in Great Falls November 30-December 1 and division tournament February 28-March 2.
The Cornell Cafe in Choteau will open Monday November 5 under Mr and Mrs Cecil Elliott. They will operate 6 am to 10 pm in winter. Elliott has 3 years in Choteau and previously worked for Montalban Oils Inc and Taylor Drilling in Roundup. The Elliott's have four children and leased the cafe from Si and Mrs Schoonmaker.
A new ground school class begins in November at Chateau Flying Service. Instructor John Nordhagen says training will be in a Cessna 150 with radio and instruments. Farmers in the Conservation Reserve program with contracts expiring this year may extend diversions for another year under the 1963 Land Use Adjustment program. About 1.3 million acres on 19 000 farms, including 16 400 acres in 37 Montana counties, will maintain conserving use with soil protection cover. Details on payments and provisions are at ALCS county offices.
The United States Marine Corps feature A Force in Readiness will be shown at the Roxy Theatre Chateau this Saturday and Sunday alongside the regular feature films.
Montalban Oils Inc and associates announce the purchase of Northern Natural Gas producing properties in the Gypsy Basin field north of Chateau near the Pondera Teton county line. Chicago investor D. G Gustafson and John R Marchi join the deal. The field has seven gas wells and five oil wells with a No 1 well in southwest part rated for 52 million cubic feet open flow. Estimated oil output exceeds 150 barrels per day with over two million barrels of oil reserves and ten billion cubic feet of gas reserves. A three well development program and a future gas plant and pipeline are planned.
