Chateau expects a record crowd as 354 Montana AAU Junior Olympic athletes arrive Friday to compete through Saturday, surpassing the 310-participant mark set at Hamilton last year. Coaches and parents from 43 schools across 32 communities will accompany the athletes.
Meet officials report a record 354 participants forcing a severe lodging shortage. Chateau Pavilion will house over 100 boys while motels and hotels fill up. People can offer sleeping space by contacting Jack Wright or Al Hensley. Space is needed Friday night as athletes return home Saturday. A charge may apply.
Montana will send large contingents to the state meet with Scobey in the east and Hamilton and Anaconda among the top participants. Hamilton has a 40 member squad while Anaconda brings 46, the largest. The two day meet opens Friday at 1 pm with 60 trial races and Friday field event trials, followed by finals in pole vault and high jump. Saturday features most track finals and relay events with a strong field for national contenders Moran and Walt. Moran seeks a senior discus record while Walt aims for top shot put in a crowded field.
Jack Van De Riet a former Chateau resident received a superior performance award at a Salt Lake City ceremony on May 18 from the Federal Aviation Agency incentive and awards committee. It marks his third consecutive year of this recognition for duties in air traffic management flight operation and procedural development. He and his wife Ruth O’Hare and two children plan to move from Murray Utah to 1567 West Hemlock Drive in Salt Lake City where they recently built a home.
Dutton finished second in Class C at the Interscholastic meet in Missoula last weekend with 21 points, trailing Sheridan 40 2 3. Schultz swept the 100 and 220 dashes, Trebesch took fourth in the 440, and the Dutton 880 relay team set a Class C record at 1 3 4 8. The relay squad included Schultz Dick Trebesch Jack Becker and Jim Clotfelter. Augusta Simms Culbertson tied for sixth with eight points each, Power and Savage tied for 14th with five points.
The Teton County Democrats postponed their fund raising dinner planned for June 2 due to a scheduling conflict with the Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner in Great Falls. A new date for the benefit will be announced later.
Choteau firemen urged residents to report invalids to the city clerk James Sulgrove by post card to aid rapid evacuation in fires. Plans include window decals for homes with sufficient reports. New officers took office led by Pete Huidekoper as president and Bud Taylor as chief.

First trip needs blood test, age proof, and 2.25 dollars. second trip five days later issues license. A special fire truck election will be held in Chateau on June 16 from 12 noon to 8 pm to approve a contract over three years for a $17 000 truck. Registration closes June 1 at 12 noon in the county clerk and recorder's office. City property owners must register if not already registered for the June 5 primary.
The Dutton High School graduation exercises featured address by George Bandy associate professor and athletics director at Northern Montana College Havre. Eleven seniors and 23 eighth graders received diplomas with Alice Johnson and Judith Phillips named valedictorian and salutatorian. Various awards were presented including Heisey, Chris Jensen scholarship, and Dan Foundation leadership awards. Music surrounded the ceremony with Pam Fichtner piano pieces and an oboe solo by Linda Haglund plus a vocal by the girls sextette.
Kenneth Running Rabbit nine of Browning died after a car driven by Gary Dennis Shelmerdine eighteen of Chateau struck him Sunday. Shelmerdine braked about 150 feet to avoid the child but the right headlight hit him, hurling him roughly 50 feet. He died on arrival at Browning hospital.
Gary and Mrs. Charles Allan moved early Saturday to visit Ignatius and Edgar Allan. They spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Allan, visiting relatives and enjoying time with the family.
The Choteau Jaycees sponsor the District 3 high school rodeo with about 75 contestants registered. Events include cow cutting bareback and saddle bronc riding calf roping barrel races and pole bending. Preliminary rounds start Saturday at 9 am at the Choteau Rodeo grounds ahead of the June 9 and 10 finals.
Four Pendroy students Mary Hansmann Joyce Page Diane Halverson and Patricia Ann Stokes received diplomas at a May 24 graduation in the Farmers Union hall. Superintendent Ed Schiller urged wholehearted effort in high school as the class creed No Gains Without Pains was read.
Trinity Lutheran Church announces vacation church school sessions for children aged four through seventh grade. Sessions run Monday to Friday from 9 10 11 45 am and 1 3 30 pm with separate morning for four and five year olds. Lessons center on the Apostles Creed and daily life applications using workbooks and age appropriate projects. Teaching staff includes Judy Morris Eunice Bremer Pat Tangen Evely Dale Susan Gravdal.
Montana voters head to polls on Tuesday June 5 to choose party candidates for the November general election. Most precincts open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with some at 1 p.m. write-in rules require a five percent threshold from 1958 for ballot placement. Polling sites include Choteau Power Fairfield Collins Spring Valley Pendrey Bynum Agawam Farmington Diamond Valley Dutton Greenfield and more.
Rev R Halaas presided at Chateau High School graduation addressing seniors on talents discoveries ambition and compassion as assets for life. Co valedictorians Lee Drummond and Carol Howard spoke. scholarships were awarded to Howard Drummond and Rodney Schilling. Several seniors listed as graduates and a reception followed in the gym.

Shadow Otness was killed last week by a speeding Buick on the Augusta highway. Witnesses saw the car strike Shadow while he and Murphy Erickson were with Miss Margaret Larson and Gary Malcott. Shadow pushed Murphy clear but perished. Miss Larson pulled him from the street and help arrived soon after. Funeral details are not announced. Shadow, son of Nickel Criess, lived northeast of Chateau and was not active in community groups.

In the grade school Dorothy Kneeland will marry, Helen Miller will attend Great Falls College for a degree, Janet Slezak will pursue Geeree vat ene Montana degree, and a faculty member will accept a new post.

May rain totaling 3.96 inches aided short subsoil moisture reserves and surface moisture in Chateau and surrounding areas say county agent Ray Kelly. He notes soils with high moisture holding capacity should yield a fair crop if no further rain appears, with a good June rain still needed.
Applications for school transportation refunds for the 1962-63 school year must be filed with William F. Olsen, clerk of Choteau schools, by Monday, June 25. Parents of students attending Choteau Grade School or Choteau High School who are eligible for transportation refunds must complete and return the form before the budget meeting on June 26. Forms may be obtained at the clerk's office.
Heavy rains postpone the Chateau Golf tournament set for June 3. Tournament manager Ed Schiller says rain halted course improvements and a clubhouse addition, with the event rescheduled for a later date.
Margaret, sister of Al Barton, is a patient at St. Pauls Hospital in Saskatoon Canada. She will be hospitalized for over two weeks and would appreciate letters and cards from friends.
Choteau placed high in the Class B state meet at Missoula, finishing sixth amid injuries. Red Lodge won with 25 points. Libby and Loyola tied at 23.1, and Chateau's Ray Yeager led with multiple school records in the 440 and high hurdles.
