Election results from Teton county ballot showing close sheriff race

Voters turned out in larger numbers than expected with 2 352 ballots cast of 3 496 registered. Republican A O Peterson won the sheriff nomination. Democrat Albert N Becker led the treasurer race by 42 votes over Marshall Winship with 438 to 396. Lorraine Maynard easily captured the Democratic treasurer nod. write in candidate Fanniel Manchester will run in November. Other races across Montana noted with party choices and precinct splits.

Fortine mill owner plans Chateau site for new sawmill

Pat Hume, Fortine mill operator, announces a new sawmill to be built near Chateau on Olney and Porcupine Creeks in about six weeks. The plant will run 30,000 board feet daily, employ about 25 workers, and produce 2x4 studs for wholesale while shipping nonlocal lumber east. The project, backed by a five million foot timber contract, centers near the Great Northern right of way three miles north of Choteau.

287 Caravan Extends Tour To Edmonton

The exuberant U S Highway 287 Caravan, a Texas Colorado Wyoming group, extended its tour from Chateau to Edmonton Alberta to promote a Mississippi to Canada highway stretch via Yellowstone Glacier Park Chateau. The association planned to end at Lethbridge but added stops to boost business. In Chateau the Chamber of Commerce hosted a banquet with speeches and birthday celebrations. Ray Kelly showcased color slides of the Choteau area.

Montana and Federal Agencies Plan North Fork Teton Fishery Renewal

Montana Fish and Game Department and U S Forest Service held talks with the Teton County Sportsmen's Club Sun River Conservation Council and the Lewis and Clark advisory board to discuss re establishing a fishery on the north fork of the Teton River. The fishery was nearly wiped out by the 1958 flood and has not recovered due to scarce streamside cover and food. A project to restore stream fishing on the north fork is planned.

Watershed Damage Areas Inspected by Regional Office Party

Representatives of the forest service regional office in Missoula recently inspected areas of watershed damage in Jones Creek Hungry Man Creek and Pike Creek to determine measures to prevent damage and restore the areas. Northern Montana high school rodeo to crown champions in Choteau

About 75 young wranglers compete for trophies at the District 3 High School rodeo in Choteau. The event opens Saturday at noon with a parade through town including Montana Junior Miss Suzie Connally and Choteau baton twirler Nancy Robinson. Montana girls vie for rodeo queen. local boys and a lone girl from Chateau enter multiple events. Awards include all around champion trophies, a hard luck award, fastest calf roper, and wrangler jackets for top competitors.
