Isaac F. Marcos son, longtime Saturday Evening Post writer, presents a 357 page history of The Anaconda Company from its 1895 Montana origins to its modern era. The volume traces the firm’s wartime and peacetime fortunes and its leaders' policies including staff development and open communication with employees.
The Department of Agriculture estimates about 7 million acres contracted this year for the Soil Bank conservation reserve. Montana shows 70,706 acres signed with 473 contracts statewide valued at roughly 1.18 million dollars. Officials project 25 million acres in the program by 1960 as counties work to finalize signups.
All teaching positions at Chateau schools are filled per Superintendent Ed Schiller. Three vacancies existed: one in the high school and two in the grade faculty. New appointments include Carmelita McNamee as commercial teacher and Margaret Roe as fourth grade, with several former staff returning next fall.
Scouts from Glacier Toole Pondera Teton and Augusta in Lewis and Clark converge at Birch Creek camp near Dupuyer for a May 31 practice ahead of Camp Napi. Events include fire by flint and steel compass signaling cooking tents and knot tying with AB or C ratings. Sunday features religious services and a barbecue beef dinner donated by Brady Cub Scouts families. The Woman's club installed officers at Mrs. Fred Tesch’s home and admitted 18 new members in 18 months.
State Highway Patrol reports a two car collision near Dupuyer on Monday around 6 p.m. Injured were Mrs Erva Stephens of Shelby, Mrs Rose Tatsey, and Joan Carter aged 14. Stephens missed the proper turn and drove over the double line, colliding with George Tatsey's car. Tatsey cited for no current license. Stephens cited for failing to yield half the roadway.
Sunday opening of the 1957 fishing season drew strong angling in the Teton river and Eureka Lake, with Nilan Reservoir near Augusta underwhelming. Unofficial counts show large crowds at Tiber reservoir, while Montana reports 3,976 licenses sold in Teton county from May 1, 1956 to April 30, 1957 across various categories.
The Chateau Jaycees plan a smoker at the Moose hall Friday starting at 8 p.m. All men 21 to 36 may join. Admission is $2.25 with movies lunch and entertainment. Notables include Bob Johnson Kermit Kruse Larry Abel and Robert Quinn. Delegations from Conrad Cut Bank Shelby and Great Falls expected. Plans for a kids fish derby progress well.
Montana Red Cross chapters vote to charge hospitals six dollars per pint for blood processing starting July 1. State Blood Council Chair Burchak says the fee covers part of processing costs while the blood product remains free. Hospitals will bill patients for administration. overall fund-raising shortfalls pressured the move.

Paul Jung of Conrad and Charles E Cornell of Malta pleaded not guilty in district court on Monday to charges of first degree burglary and a fraudulent check without an account. Jung is held on a $2,000 bond related to a boxcar breakin at Acme siding between Collins and Dutton. Cornell’s bond was set at $1,000. Counts Attorney Leon Murphy appeared for the state.
In Justice Williams Irwin's court George Davis and John Patrinick were fined 3520 each for drunk and disorderly conduct at Power. Paul Jung Conrad bound over to district court on 2000 bail for first degree burglary. William Barker Choteau forfeited 10 for no valid license. Richard Johnson Dutton forfeited 10 for no current plates. Loran Wolf Creek and Owen Baker Choteau forfeited 10 for no valid license. Jack Sehrock and Ronald Burgess of Chateau fined 25 for drag racing with licenses revoked 60 days.
William Shea of Great Falk visited Chateau on Tuesday as part of a business trip.
Kenneth E. Sturgis of Bozeman has been named by Secretary Ezra Taft Benson to the State ASC Committee, replacing Wilhelm Slegle who retired in December under the rotation policy. Sturgis, with a history in retail and farming, has managed J C Penney and a hardware store, then farmed in Farmington since 1949.
George Carroll of Helena will deliver the Memorial Day address at the Choteau cemetery on Thursday May 30. A full Veterans Council program follows a 11 am ceremony after a 10:15 am veterans and National Guard gathering. Carroll, a former Choteau resident and past James Smith Post No 6 commander, now works for the Montana State Highway office in Helena.
Marlene Weist was installed May 6 as Worthy Advisor of Chateau Assembly No. 54 Rainbow for Girls. Other officers installed included Judy Davison as worthy associate advisor, Penny Dahlin as charity, Terry Vancehope as drill leader, and Ruth Ann Swanson as confidential observer.
Funeral services were held Saturday from Trinity Lutheran church for Mrs. Raghnild A Joramo 82 a Teton county pioneer who died May 21 after a two year illness. Born in Norway in 1874 she came to Teton county in 1903 and settled at Bynum in 1907. Survivors include two sons Edward and Emerick Joramo a daughter Mary Kjelsrud seven grandchildren eleven great grandchildren four brothers Louis Erickson and three in Norway and a sister. Interment was in Chateau cemetery with pallbearers Adolph Saterlic Homer Rowland Robert Miller Guy Miller Gordon Monkman and Orval Monkman.
City irrigation hours end with a morning alert at 16 am on June 1 per City Clerk Sulgrove. Evening watering hours run 7 am to 10 am and 5 pm to 9 pm with a 9 pm curfew. Water users must shut off sprinklers and use only Nozzle or sprinkler when needed.
A meeting is announced for Monday night at 8 00 p m at the Legion hall to decide if there is enough interest to form a city softball league this summer.
At the 1100 oclock service last Sunday Trinity Lutheran Church confirmed a class led by Pastor A Bernard Gravdal. Confirmed were Eunice Arensmeyer Dean Baker Lloyd Pedersen Joann Chalmers Richard Moore Mona Kay Larsen Betty Baker Jon Huffman Harold Wood Donna Oberwolte Winifred Vail and Stephen Koch.
Supt Ed Schiller lists Choteau high and grade school staff plans for summer. Teachers stay in town or travel to Billings Great Falls Vaughn Minneapolis Minnesota and BOzeman while attending summer schools workshops and college courses.
Nelson N Ford Sr 57 of Augusta died last week in Missoula at a brother-in-law home. He lived 40 years in Helena, born in Augusta, educated there and in Missoula. Survived by wife Anna, three sons Nelson Jr Melvin Darrell, and six daughters Tresa Rita Floria Eleanor Barbara Carol, plus a brother, nephew, and three grandchildren.
