Father Sheerin Celebrates Silver Jubilee at St Josephs Chateau

Father James J. Sheerin marked 25 years in the priesthood with a silver Jubilee observance at St. Josephs parish in Chateau attended by hundreds of friends and 38 priests. Events included Solemn Mass presided by Bishop J M Gilmore, a banquet with speeches, and an evening reception.

Sheriff Shoots Two Dogs In Wild Predatory Pack Near Ranches

Sheriff Al Peterson and deputies investigated two dogs blamed for raiding ranches between Chateau and Lowry. A police dog and a collie shepherd killed cattle valued at about 2000 dollars as the dogs, now described as wild, attacked a yearling and roamed up to six miles from their home ranches. Ranchers fear further losses to cattle and livestock.

Most Choteau business places close at 2 PM Saturday for Warren Daley services. Almost all Choteau stores shut all day Monday May 31 for Memorial Day observance though the holiday falls Sunday.

Hutterites face land buying limit talks in Teton county

A public meeting drew 300 residents to discuss curbing Hutterite land purchases in Teton county. Spokesman D P Fabrick says Hutterites will decide by Monday May 31 whether to expand holdings, with no new colonies planned in the area. Tanner of Lethbridge said two Alberta groups exist and noted cross border banking permissions amid questions about citizenship and leadership.

Mayor Hentges Reports County High School Tax Distribution

Mayor John Hentges released a funded breakdown of 1947 high school taxes in Teton County showing Chateau district with 124 pupils paid 49 percent of total costs, Fairfield 162 pupils paid 16 percent, Dutton 41 pupils paid 21 percent, and Power 50 pupils paid 14 percent. The four districts received allocations totaling $166,712.00, with Chateau 51,938.90, Fairfield 67,856.94, Dutton 17,181.37, and Power 20,939.79, reflecting property values and enrollment.

Warren H Daley to be honored with special services

Warren H Daley 23 who was an aviation machinist mate in the navy captured by the Japanese in 1945 will be honored with special services at the Choteau Methodist church 2 p m Saturday. American Legion and VFW burial rites will follow at the cemetery with pallbearers from the VFW and Legion. Daley's body arrives today under the World War II dead repatriation program attended by CMM Bernard F Dunn.

Golf Club Elects Five Officers for New Year

The Chateau Glaf club voted five new officers at city hall last Friday night led by president B I Packer and vice president C W Bousard. Directors named were Clarence Looney and Denzil McDonald. The dues stay at $10 per family and R E Nelson chairs the membership drive. Committee heads include E C Hensley greens and grounds J A March tournament and state meets and Dr Boussard C D McDonald and Clarence Looney clubhouse.

State Fire Official To Teach Local Firemen

Frank Hallenback from Helena will teach Choteau firemen at a training school program next Tuesday and Wednesday nights June 1 and 2. Elmer Erickson, president of the Choteau department, said all firemen are asked to report for a fire drill tomorrow night at 7 at the fire station.

Davis, Butte attorney and former Rotary International president, will give the commencement address for 33 Choteau High School seniors at the auditorium. Valedictorian Harold Hinman and salutatorians John Rose and Howard Reiquam will also speak brief ly on the theme Youth Looks Forward. Davis, a Republican candidate for the U S Senate, is set to oppose Wellington D Rankin in the primaries.

Rites Held Yesterday In Choteau For Ada Shelmerdine

Funeral services for Ada Leona Shelmerdine 48 of Choteau were held at the Methodist church. The Rev H L Engdahl officiated with pallbearers from nearby towns. She died in Great Falls after a two month illness. Burial followed in Chateau cemetery. Survived by husband Wilford two sons Larry and James and three daughters Twila Lamar Kleysteuber Wanda Davis and Inez Shelmerdine plus a brother and sister Delia Lemmon Shelmerdine and Franklin Lemmon. Born April 9 1900 in Boise Idaho she married in Lewistown in 1917 and lived in Teton county thereafter.

Spring Creek Closed to Adult Fishing in Teton Notice

The Teton Sportsmen's Association forbids adults from fishing in Spring Creek from Chateau to the Corbett place outlet. The waters are reserved for children 12 and under. A large stock was planted for kids' fishing on a gentleman's agreement, says secretary Earl Hollar.

Maynard Plans Resignation at Choteau High School

Wilbert Maynard, the Choteau high school music instructor, says he will resign from the faculty and seek a school job elsewhere next fall. He and Mrs. Maynard will teach music courses at Choteau during the coming summer months.
