The junior class at Teton High held its first Junior Prom Saturday evening at Woodmen hall with seniors as guests of honor and attendance from underclassmen and outside friends. The event was described as a happy occasion for the students.
The World at Large reports a million dollar fire in Houston on May 19 with no deaths. A Yukon forest fire roared for 200 miles, believed started to clear undergrowth for timber interests. Roosevelt carried Ohio. Washington to send contesting delegates to the Republican convention. Floyd Allen convicted of first degree murder and to face the electric chair. Eugene V. Debs slated to lead the Socialist Party again. Homer C Stuntz named Methodist bishop. T F Henderson and W O Shepard also elected to bishop positions.
In Chateau Montana on April 16 1912 the county board met in special session. They approved the Collins Eyraud road and multiple construction and right of way actions for roads including Valier Cut Bank Williams North and other routes. Damages and benefits were set, some payments approved, and several roads ordered opened as public highways after surveys or hearings.
Financial report of the Fourth of July committee outlines receipts and disbursements and lists road plans. Road reports detail proposed alignments for Cut Bank Taft, Cut Bank Speak, Shelby Schwartz, and Shelby Dunkirk North roads with surveys, join points, and abandoned routes noted.
County Clerk Garrett filed a petition to form a new Toole County from parts of Hill and Teton counties. The proposed county would include an 18 mile west strip of Hill, a area north of the Marias river in Teton, excluding Cut Bank, and Fowler, with most of the Great Northern railway in Teton and the Shelby line up to Fowler. The southern Blackfeet reservation would not be included. The board of commissioners meets June 3 to act, with June 21 set for the hearing and protests due before then. the hearing may be extended 14 days.
At the 1912 graduation in Teton County, three candidates Lizette Truchot Nellie Corson and Christian Monroe were named. Dr J M Hamilton president of Montana State Agricultural College addressed the crowd noting future graduates Edward Hodgskiss Kyle Jones Freeman Daley and Glen Luther. Diplomas were not in time and could not be presented.
A public school program by the primary and intermediate departments featured songs revitations and drills with the exhibit of all grade work. The teachers earned praise for preparing the children though Principal Wyatt could not join due to State board exam duties. The exhibit showcased painting mat weaving nature study and related subjects and the afternoon appealed to attendees.
The Democratic county central committee met in Choteau Saturday afternoon and named delegates to the state convention in Butte. Delegates include G. M. Coffey W. J. Dorrington Walter L. Verge James N. Ralston Choteau Chas Krofft Strabane W. J. Arnot t Conrad F B D Kingsbury Walier and Jas A Johnson Shelby. Alternates listed include D Stewart Byoum P H Crossen J S Innes J M Weaver Wm Krofft Chateau O D Gray Conrad E D Forrest Dupuyer J C Boettcher Collins. The delegation was not instructed.
The class night exercises of the class of 1912 at the county high school drew a large crowd in the high school building Friday evening. Miss Hodgskiss opened with a piano duet, Sam Crawford sang solo, and Miss Whittier joined in a vocal duet. The senior girls, aided by two juniors, presented a two act farce When Women Vote with notable humor. The play’s message implied anti suffrage if its lessons are followed.
The heaviest movement of range cattle into Montana in years is under way. About 75 000 head will pass through Billings in days and head to northern Montana for range pasturage after being loaded at Artesia New Mexico near the border. By last Sunday 81 cars had reached Billings, fed, and sent on to their destination at Hilver Montana.
Memorial services honor nation’s fallen soldiers to be held Sunday at 10 30 in the Methodist church. Invitations were sent to Civil War Spanish American Indian wars veterans. unknown soldiers are considered invited. Attorney W L Verga will speak with special music, decorations, and reserved seats for soldiers.
Information reached the county clerk that the south approach to the Muddy bridge at Byrum was washed away by high water leaving the bridge impassable for teams. The bridge has caused trouble before but the north side had washed out in prior seasons.
Farmington reports Miss Josie Peterson teaching near Conrad returned home last Saturday. Raoul lectured on socialism at the hall last Saturday evening followed by a dance. Schibstead couple visited Power last week. Rev Hall conducted services in the west school house last Sunday. Mrs D E Jacobson hosted the Ladies Aid last Saturday afternoon. Rev KE Wachsmuth preached at the German Lutheran church last Sunday evening. Mrs P J Tweet and Miss Thilda Tweet visited from Fairfield last week. Mr and Mrs James Drinkwine went to Great Falls Tuesday last.
The annual commencement exercises of the State Agricultural college will be held on June 5. Montana places herself in the Taft column at the Livingston convention last week. T. A. Marlow named national committeeman. Buildings are being moved in Lewis Town for the Great Northern railway entrance into Fergus county. The Methodist Episcopal church may establish Helena as a permanent episcopal residence and appoint a bishop. Dr Edwin Booth Craighead of Tulane may succeed C A Dunway as president of the University of Montana. The Grand Canyon colors result from mineral matter in lavas, with plant life influencing geysers and hot springs. Governor Norris seeks two more signatures to call a special legislature session for a direct primary bill.
Mrs Wheat of Browning visits sister-in-law Miss Opal Wheat at Belleview while her husband works on the reservation. Mrs Lane travels to Jerome Idaho to see her parents after a stay in Selena. Great Falls beef interests keep Mr Salmond away during his child’s appendicitis operation in Great Paris with Dr Bateman. The Stodgsons host visitors Odell and sister Air from South Dakota. Belleview school closes. Rupert Ward plans a ranch summer. Malone ranch leased by W McDonald Wright with lambing season favorable and a six foot land birth reported.
From Sunday afternoon to Monday night a steady southern Teton county rain, with more showers through Thursday, lifts snowmelt and freshet. Farmers hopeful for good yields as warmer weather accelerates water flow and freshet on the Teton.
