Who Discovered Butte
The first discoverers of the Butte mining camp staked claims in 1864 on a hill later rich beyond belief. A prior prospecting hole beside elk antler gadls hints at earlier activity, but no Montana records exist before 1862. A traveler declined a six-claim offer of 500 dollars, yet those claims eventually produced over a billion dollars in wealth.
