Tomorrow Friday special school election day in Choteau and 11 voting places within the Choteau high school district. In district 1 surrounding Choteau, electors may vote four ballots including authorization to issue and sell bonds of $190,000 at up to six percent interest, payable semi-annually.
Lexa Oil completes Tregillion No 1 east of Pendroy in Teton county, delivering a 75 barrel producer after gas and oil show at 2 080 feet. Test swab yielded 15 barrels oil in 10 hours, with acid treatment recorded. Lexa plans more wells as Phillips Petroleum advances Johnson field development nearby.
Warm sun in Teton county last week spurred round-the-clock seedings. If dryness continues, about 85 percent of spring planting could be under way by weekend. Winter wheat area is down yet ahead remains bright for hay and forage. May 1 forecasted winter wheat output 24,073,000 bushels, 191,000 below 1949 and 675,000 below 10-year average. Rye seen at 220,000 bushels, up 36 percent from last year.
The Seal brothers present two circus performances in Choteau on Wednesday May 24 at 2 and 8 p.m. at the circus grounds. Features include Bud E Anderson trained liberty horses De Kohl trio acrobats Wells brothers Mar molego troupe aerial ballets Chief Keys and his Cheetah Indians Babe the pachyderm and a large animal show plus clowns. Doors open one hour before each show.
Final drive funding returns urged. Jim Henderson and J C Penney store manager or Eddie Howard named as contacts. Mr and Mrs F G Curtis and daughter June travel to Cooperstown North Dakota for uncle's funeral this week.
Thirteen candidates have filed for county offices for the July 18 primary in Teton County. Two Democrat incumbents joined the slate this week, Paul R. Rice for state senator and G. L. Banks for county coroner, joining earlier filers including Leo Murphy, D. James Peebles, R. Effie R. McDowell, D. Al Peterson, R. Bill Allum, D. Bob Clark, R. Harry Van DeReit, D. William Irwin, R. James Dellno, D. W. Earl Hollar, R. and Muriel S. Reiquam, R.
The Greenfield community votes this Saturday May 20 on a special levy to build a 40 by 90 foot auditorium onto the west end of the community hall. The project includes a stage dressing rooms and a full size basketball court with construction starting this summer for use this fall. The Greenfield PTA spearheaded the move with a petition showing 100 percent local support and all taxpayers are expected to vote.
Len Morrow, owner of Public Drug in Great Falls, has purchased Malone's Pharmacy in Chateau and will take over operation of the store in the near future, John Malone announced yesterday.
School will dismiss on Saturday May 27 to complete the required 180 days after weather related closures. Six teachers including Leila Miller Bridget Meek Milly Brown Russell Raymond Douglas Wagg and Superintendent Owen Loftsgaarden will return next year. Commercial and English positions remain to be filled for the next term at Power.
May 29 program at Choteau high school auditorium features Sid Willoughby and about 40 guests from Great Falls. No admission, but a collection will support the new Chateau hospital. Sid performs songs by Alice Brockley, while Mrs Willoughby offers violin and a classical dance number.
A Hereford calf born dead May 1 at the Robinson-Kropp ranch six miles south of Choteau had seven legs and eight feet attached by flesh to the back bones. Four hind legs and three front legs were present. The anomaly was exhibited in Choteau this week.
Friends of Mr and Mrs Jerry Breen visited their home on Tuesday night to honor the couple on their 25th wedding anniversary. They received silver presents and shared lunch. The Breens married in Harlowton and later moved to Chateau, where he previously ran a Ford agency.
The 1950 census released to Mayor K E Sturgis lists Choteau with 1613 residents as of April 1. This figure may be revised by Washington and excludes Cowgill addition residents within city limits. Fairfield is reported at 686 for 1950. Chateau’s 1940 population was 1181, up 432.
The Choteau high school band will perform with the chorus ensembles soloists and twirlers in a program next Tuesday night at 8 at the high school auditorium. This marks their first appearance in the new uniforms worn last weekend at Havre Music festival where 39 bands attended. Coats and hats arrived last Thursday and Havre provided meals and 50 cents for each musician.
John Smiley O Keefe 56, longtime Collins Brady area resident, died May 5 in a Conrad hospital after several months illness. Born March 25 1894 in Paris Texas, he lived in Omaha before moving to Montana in 1921. Survived by four children John and Orville of Collins Evelyn of Conrad and Leona of Great Falls. Last rites held at St Michael's Conrad with Rev J J Sheerin officiating. Interment Highland Cemetery Conrad. Pallbearers: George Beattie Benny Berland Harold Crane Gun Jermanson Ben Berginger Frank Neiswender.
The Farmers Home Administration grants the first farm housing loan in Teton County to Alfred T. McCauley of Fairfield for a new family dwelling on his 120 acre irrigated farm west of Fairfield. The loan, authorized by the Housing Act of 1949, offers up to 33 years at 4 percent to farmers unable to finance housing.
The Teton county Farmers Union schedules a meeting in Greenfield next Monday May 22 inviting members from all county locals to attend.
Voters in local school districts 1 4 5 7 8 12 16 23 5 61 and 62 are urged to cast ballots tomorrow May 19 from noon to 8 pm. Polling will be at Choteau grade school and at school houses within each district as part of the greater high school district.
Voters will decide on a bond issue to fund a new grade school and related purchases in Chateau. Ballots include authorization to buy land at the southeast corner of the high school grounds and to issue and sell bonds, with district wide and regional voting rules noted.
Margaret Montague daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry M Montague of Collins will be vale dictorian at commencement next Wednesday night at 8 in the high school auditorium. Joyce Wilson daughter of Mr and Mrs Clyde Wilson of Chateau will be class salutatorian and address the audience. E A Atkinson professor of psychology and philosophy at Montana State university Missoula will be featured speaker. Rev A Bernard Gravdal will deliver the Baccalaureate sermon Sunday night at 8. Eighth grade commencement exercises are scheduled for next.
