A large turnout discussed the May 19 special school election on the Choteau high school addition and new grade school. The grade school plan received broad support while concerns about high school funding and site suitability drew questions and critique.
Arnold Hanusa chairs the Teton county U S Savings Bonds committee as the Independence Bond drive runs May 15 through July 4. The Treasury aims to raise 65 million dollars in Series E bonds with three million volunteers, symbolized by 48 Liberty Bell duplicates touring many communities. The kickoff at Independence Hall in Philadelphia will feature President Truman and Treasury Secretary Snyder.
Mrs. Pearl Tintinger of Cascade state worth y grand matron of the Order of the Eastern Star of Montana will visit Chateau Fidelity chapter No 18 OES on May 16. Mrs. Jesse Malone will host a luncheon at her ranch home at 1 pm honoring Tintinger and other guests. A 6 15 pm banquet at the Masonic Temple dining room will honor the worthy grand matron. tickets are sold by Mrs. E J Crary. All Eastern Stars urged to attend. distinguished guests expected.
Choteau and six Tri angle league teams start play this Sunday with a schedule through Aug 13. Choteau visits Fairfield while Bynum plays Augusta and Belt goes to Conrad. Power draws a opening day bye.
The VFW Auxiliary hosts a May 20 event from 1 to 5 p.m. at the VFW club rooms near Chateau Drug Co. to benefit Teton Memorial hospital. A 10 cent raffle for a cake, a clothes exchange with owners setting prices, and a 20 percent hospital donation outline the fundraiser.
Governor Cheetham urged Lions clubs to unite for a common purpose at Chateau Chateau Lions Club charter night. He noted growth to 8000 clubs globally and cited plans to support community projects such as swimming pools and playgrounds.
Jake Luinstra chairman of the Teton county PMA office announced that all crop land in Teton county will be measured in 1950. The measure is compulsory for 1950 acreage allotments. About 20 field supervisors will be hired starting May 22 for 60 days. Interested parties should contact the PMA office in Chateau. Farmers unregistered for 1950 must sign up by May 20.
Eddie Howard announced that all canvassers for the street and avenue sign collection project must finish house-to-house rounds by this weekend. He said a full financial report will be prepared next Monday or Tuesday, after which new Chateau street and avenue signs will be ordered.
The Chateau IOOF lodge plans the 131st anniversary observance of the national lodge with a banquet and special numbers. A bingo game, door prizes, and a grand march at 9 30 pm will be followed by dancing.
Choteau high school band will participate in the Havre Music festival this weekend May 13. Thirty nine bands are entered in the festival. The Choteau band will travel to Havre on a chartered Greyhound bus.
All members are asked to attend the next Odd Fellows meeting. The gathering is scheduled for June and will be held at the lodge hall.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service and Wesleyan Service Guild announce a joint officer installation next Monday evening May 15 at 8 pm in the Methodist church women's parlor. Twenty one officers will be installed with Frieda Schroder and Mrs Frank Zgoda directing. A social hour follows the ceremony.
The Hellgate Rodeo Co of Missoula led by president Bob Rooker plans a night rodeo at Chateau on July 3, the first under lights. July 4 will be a daytime show with six main events plus amateur saddle bronc and bareback riding.
Advance agents announce the Seal Brothers Circus will appear in Chateau on May 24 with two shows at 2 and 8 p.m. featuring elephants, trained liberty horses, aerial ballets, the De Kohl trio, the Corniell brothers, trained dogs and monkeys, clowns, and a midway side show with common circus fare.
The Methodist choir under Vernon Alf with accompanist Mrs Edna Averill will perform a concert Sunday night May 14 at 8 p.m. in the Methodist church. Soloists include Ellen Jaconetty and Charles Averill. The program features Let Zion Rejoice, two spirituals arranged by Fred Waring, and several requested pieces highlighted by My God and I and Christiansons among others.
Al Verzuh, formerly with Marshall-Wells, announces the opening of his own plumbing shop in Chateau named Al's Plumbing and Heating. The business will be reached at telephone 5537.
Fort Benton collects 28 points to top Conrad 22 and others in brisk wind. Embleton led with 15 points on three firsts. Bokma of Conrad had 10 from two firsts. Chinook won the relay and the Johnny Malone gold cup as results detail pole vault, broad jump, high jump, discus, shot, javelin, and sprint events with times and distances.
Mrs Johan a Gunther of Kalispell dies at 80 after two weeks with her daughter in Agawam. Rev Dr A R Lodahl presides at Kalispell funeral. burial in Kalispell cemetery. Survived by daughters Nick Hoffman, Jim Bennett, Cecil Snyder. 19 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
Graduation exercises for the 1950 Chateau high school class are set for Wednesday night May 24 in the high school auditorium. Professor E A Atkinson from Montana State University will deliver the commencement address. Eighth grade exercises will be held on Thursday evening May 25. The Baccalaureate sermon will be delivered by Rev A B Gravdal on Sunday May 21 in the high school auditorium.
The Montana state health board mailed a $38,546.62 warrant to the Teton Memorial hospital association in Choteau as the first federal payment toward the $204,950 project. The 25 bed hospital is about 80 percent done with final work expected by early summer.
Pulitzer winner A B Guthrie Jr with Bernard DeVoto and Commander William J. Lederer visits Choteau guests of Tom Larson and Guthrie Sr. They tour Guthrie’s Twin Lakes summer home and discuss books including The World of Fiction, Across the Wide Missouri, The Year of Decision 1846, and All the Ships at Sea. Guthrie plans to attend the 1950 writers conference at Montana State University Missoula from July 27 to August 8.
At the Chateau Country club annual meeting last Wednesday night R E Nelson was elected president and secretary treasurer Clarence Looney was named vice president Frank Stearns and Al Hensley were named directors The group plans to shape the greens for the coming season and invites new members and beginners to join in organizing a golf class with Al Hensley and to participate in a spring party plans underway.
