Stan Brown Sr., head of the Montana State Highway maintenance crew at Chateau, reported this week that hundreds of dollars in damage to highway signs is occurring weekly in the area. Last weekend 10 signs were damaged.
The Chateau special education class participated in the Area II Special Olympics in Great Falls on May 6 to qualify for the State Special Olympics in Billings later this month. Local winners include Karen Brandveld tumble and floor first, Cindy Allen second in tumble and floor, Tammy Smith first softball throw and third in tumbling, Bruce Gilmor first softball throw second tumbling and second in 220 yard run, Valerie Carroll first tumbling and third in softball throw, John Richert second tumbling third in 220 yard run and third in softball throw. Three class members will attend the state meet in Billings. The event is sponsored by the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation and financed largely through honey bear sales by the Jaycees, with vandalism noted along highway routes between Choteau and Augusta and near the Teton River bridge south of Choteau.
Teton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary collects reservations for bridge pinochle and whist to raise money for the Heart Monitor Fund. Two May 18 and 20 parties with additional events May 21. prices are 2.50 per person or 10 per table. Current fund total 8104 with multiple recent donations. Call Sharon Engh for details.
Choteau high school boys and girls track won their divisions at the Conrad Invitational with high scores. Boys led with 69 points over Conrad and Browning, while girls posted 57 to top Conrad and Cut Bank. Standout performances included Tom Maltby and Wally Dhane in sprints and relays.
Rainfall last week measured 0.65 inches aiding pasture and growth while delaying spring seeding. Temperatures rose into the high 70s as fields opened for planting but showers slowed progress statewide. By May 8, spring wheat 70 percent seeded, oats 65, corn 25, potatoes 10, dry beans 15, sugar beets 80, with winter wheat in good condition and livestock receiving supplemental feed. calving 90 percent done and shearing 75 percent complete.
The annual Red Cross campaign is under way in Teton County with mail solicitations sent to residents. Gale Isakson and Mrs. Grant Curtis chair the drive seeking local donations to a $2200 goal, thanking past aid after floods in 1964 and other services.
Don LaBaugh announces the Bicentennial Fourth display will be the largest yet with a planned 1300 dollar budget. He notes costs rose from 350 to 850 in previous years and urges community donations at local businesses and banks to meet the goal.
About 40 Choteau walkers joined the March of Dimes event sponsored by the Choteau Jaycees. Organizers reported roughly 1700 dollars pledged upon finishing the course. Ten walkers tackled 25 miles to Augusta, with two Augusta residents setting a 6 hour record. The 10 mile leg drew about 30 participants with 697 dollars pledged, while Augusta participants raised about 1000 dollars or more.
The Choteau Elementary pre-school roundup will be held in Room 41 from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday May 18 to register new pupils for 1976-77. Eligible are children born on or before Oct 15 1970 for first grade and before Oct 15 1971 for kindergarten.
Baccalaureate services for the Choteau High School senior class are set for Sunday May 23 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium with graduation on Monday May 24 at 8 p.m. in the gym. Grade school graduation is planned for Tuesday June 1 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium followed by a dance and hayride. The Walk a Thon fundraiser featured 17 year old Paul Dreyer as youngest walker and Grandma Ella Weist as oldest. Augusta participants and prize winners are named along with sponsors and refreshments. The Jaycees thank participants and pledge contributors, hoping for an annual event.
