Choteau High School trustees formalize architect engagement and seek federal preplanning aid to set up a bond election late this year or early next. A vote would fund either a new school or an addition with bids and construction to follow if approved.
About 100 persons heard Lions district governor Herb Berland describe Lions as a vehicle to aid those in need. He cited community projects and stressed service over publicity. Delegates from Choteau Fairfield Dutton Conrad Cascade and Browning plus awards for several members were noted.
James D. Crane of Chateau received two awards at Montana State University Dean Stone Night. He won the Olaf J. Bue Memorial Award for outstanding reporting and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation award. Crane and Dean Baker were inducted into Kappa Tau Alpha.
Patrick J. Campbell, former Choteau resident, has joined Tri bune Printing and Supply Co. as a salesman after three years in radio station sales. Campbell, a Choteau High School and Montana State University, Missoula graduate, previously worked with Jerry Coffey at the Choteau Acantha and in Montgomery Ward Great Falls.
Youths aged 10 through 12 may register Monday May 17 at 6 30 at the grade school diamond. Jim Spinder league manager says all who wish to play should register to participate.
The week ending May 11 reports a high of 73 and a low of 27. The previous year’s period had a high of 63 and a low of 36. Year to date precipitation stands at 2.73 inches versus 6.55 inches last year.
The American Board of Funeral Service Education will hold its mid year meeting in Choteau the last week in July. About 35 to 40 persons are expected to attend. Sessions take place at Gleason's Resort west of Chateau. Mr and Mrs Banks recently attended a directors meeting in Cincinnati. Banks is a past president and represents the northwest states on the board.
The public is invited to a talent night at the Chateau Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Sunday May 16 at 7 30 p m. The youth of the church will present musical numbers and refreshments will be served after the program.
The public is invited to an open house on Sunday May 16 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the home of Mr and Mrs William Breen honoring Mr and Mrs Jerry Breen on their 40th anniversary. Gift requests ask no gifts. Duane Reisch and family visited her parents C W Schaeffer in Cut Bank on Sunday.
Rev. Marlow N. Engberg, 39, to be installed pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church at 11 am Sunday May 16. Dr. R A Daehlin district president will conduct the installation and preach. Engberg arrived April 27 from Prince of Peace Home Mission Casper Wyoming and is a Minneapolis area native and Augustana College Luther Seminary graduate.
Choteau hosts the Eight Northern Division track meet Friday with Sunburst Cut Bank Shelby Conrad Browning Fairfield and Walier visiting. At Saturday’s Choteau Acantha Invitational top honors went to Cut Bank with 59% points followed by Conrad Fairfield Choteau Browning and Walier. Ed Bouma of Choteau set a new shot put record 47 feet 2 inches as Mike Shoquist of Fairfield led individual scoring with 18 tallies.
Choteau residents contributed $2000 to the Teton Memorial Hospital Association fund drive announced by chairman Lee Zwerneman. With 95 percent of the local drive finished he called it completely successful and noted $150 from Pendroy. Other areas served will hold drives later to support hospital maintenance and new equipment after flood depletion in June 1964.
Firefighters answered a 12 15 AM call at the General Mills elevator after smoke from a garbage can fire made the metal building look ablaze. The sheriff's office reported the alarm and fire crews let the refuse burn. A second call about 8 PM Sunday behind Tesch Sales and Service found burning garbage igniting a power pole. Darrel Byford helped beat back the flames before the crew arrived.
City officials meet to designate emergency duties with Mayor Dunckel as city coordinator. Aldermen assign Bill McCauley to warning and evacuation, Don Arensmeyer to police and health, Jack Rogers to elder care and shelter, Darwin Armstrong to transportation and utilities. Noon briefing held. next council session Monday May 17 at 8 p.m.
Three Choteau area men attended the Lewis and Clark Forest Advisory Council annual meeting in Great Falls. James Crawford A B Cobb Jr and Nels Hemstad represented the Choteau area. The program outlined possible trips the group may make the Sun Butte Dam proposal big game management in the Sun River area a review of the summer flood program and Soil Conservation Service small watershed projects in the Highwood Mountains.
Firefighters extinguished a garage blaze on the Arensmeyer farm four miles north of Chateau. A garbage can fire started the damage to part of the roof and north end. Sheriff Becker put damage at about 500 dollars with=response aid by deputies Hollar and McMullen and an unnamed helper.

Al Johnson Construction Co will base in Chateau during Swift Dam work west of Dupuyer. Four or five key Minneapolis personnel, plus about 50 local hires, will staff the project which runs about seven months per year for a total of 16 months of labor. Equipment moves begin next week, with offices on site. The $2,870,689 contract aims to supply water to 93,000 acres of Blackfeet Reservation and private lands.
Montana farmers bustle in late spring with widespread seeding lag due to weather. Soil moisture mostly adequate though western areas dry. Chateau region only 30 percent of spring wheat planted versus 65 typical. Barley oats and sugar beet planting ranges show lag, range grass growth slow but grazing outlook bright, cattle and sheep moved toward summer ranges as calving and lambing near completion.
Patricia Stokes of Pendrey won the Chateau VFW Auxiliary local essay contest. Her piece on education as America’s future advances to Montana department judging for possible national level.
In Choteau the community fundraising for a July 4 fireworks show lags with only 11 dollars raised by Wednesday. Mothers led by Mrs. Bob Delno organized the effort to provide a first class display, to be set off after the Legion rodeo, parade and fast draw.
The Choteau Jaycee Jayceen joint install banquet, featuring Robert Lettergrass of Lame Deer as guest speaker, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Choteau Country Club. Mrs. Tom Brown to be installed Jayceen president with LaVerne Murr as Jaycee president.
Mr and Mrs C C Clement of Rapelje are visiting at the home of their daughter Mrs Dorothy Reiner and Nancy.

It notes Guthrie s prose turns mundane events into depth while the work lacks dramatic incidents though it carries personality and reflects on his life in Chateau Kentucky and later in the East and Hollywood.
