The annual school exhibit will be held Friday May 20 from 1 to 4 PM in the school rooms. Patrons and the public are invited to view the children’s work from the past year. Principal H C Thompson extends the invitation.
Divine services Sunday at the Farmington School house at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. The S. A. Knutson pastor notes a Young People’s League meeting at E. Jacob’s Wednesday at 8 p.m.
The Acantha prints a reader letter condemning outside firms that pressure local papers for ad space, arguing ads should favor Montana home establishments. The editor notes the temptation from rival interests and urges advertisers to support local business to keep news and editorial content flowing.
After the county teachers' examination held April 29 and 30 the county superintendent issued certificates to Myrtle Heden Mondovi Grace De Gear Mary Norsby Olive Bernier Dupuyer Mary Gray Belleview May De Atley Dillon H B Hanson and Alma Zimmerman Fairfield Olive Selin Dutton All but three recipients earned second grade certificates.
Fairfield John Zimmerman Jr and H L Halladay visited Great Falls and Choteau respectively while Sam Bateman and Chas Davis spent time in Choteau. A May 4 birth was recorded for August Teubert’s son. Cole and family vacationed at Cole Bros ranch as Clark and Morgan from Butte scouted local land. Miss Alvin Zimmerman returned from Great Falls after a teaching exam. Nels Revheim and family invited to their bench ranch.
A Monday night rain broke a dry spell in northern Montana, soaking Chateau streets and deeply moistening range and crops. Tuesday remained cloudy with showers, boosting already visible grass growth and promising a strong finish to spring seeding. Local weather prophet Jas Gibson had predicted the rain to the minute, drawing on years of observation and annual comparisons.
The Teton County high school delegation led by Prof. H E Crawford leaves Missoula for the state interscholastic meet. Five boys Rupert and Fred Ward Asa and Ora Armstrong and John Truchot travel with coaching. Fred Ward is favored in sprints while Rupert pursues longer runs. The trio focus on weight events with Asa in jumps and Truchot in the shot. A return word is expected Friday or Saturday.
John and Harry Van De Riet visited St. Benton on business last week. Mrs. Ben Gordon and Miss Greta Ferris called on Hermann Van De Riet Friday. A.P. Baker and wife welcomed a baby girl born Monday May 2. Mother and child well. An entertainment at Burton school Friday May 20 with free admission followed by an ice cream social for twenty five cents.
Public auction to be held at the auctioneer's residence on Saturday May 21 starting at 2 pm. Items include heat ers ranges chairs tables beds dressers rockers and household goods plus a 30 30 Savage rifle and other articles. catalog lists many pieces.
The state land sale at the county courthouse in Chateau yielded 8,139.58 acres sold from about 20,000 offered, with no bids on the remaining 12,000 acres. Average price was 15.35 per acre, total revenue 124,954.19, highest bid 15.00 by Wm. Hodgkiss for a tract south of Chateau townsite. Other counties fared better due to rains.
Valier routed Chateau 23 to an unknown late score in a windy season opener. Parker walked many Valier runners and allowed several unearned tallies amid the high altitude.
Belleview notes reveal Mrs Geo I Miller and daughter visiting Chateau Saturday. The Belleview school will close on the twentieth day of May with three applicants for the eighth grade exam. A declamatory contest at the Belleview school awarded prizes to David Gray first and fired Miller second, with all pupils remarking well. Wilson Gray is chosen to represent Great Falls High School in Missoula athletic events including foot races, hurdles, and high jump. Mrs Peebles recovers her health. Lambing season helps sheepmen and Robert H Miller guides Ed Fisher to Birch Creek sawmill for engineer work. Geo I Smith plans to enter cattle business after buying a large buck.
Local notice lists an auction of P H K Christian's personal property at Chateau on May 21. Includes sale details and price range. Also mentions a business visitor from Belleview and Mrs J G Bair visiting Seattle, plus mares for sale by I O Larson in Choteau Montana.
In Washington on May 10 Representative C N Pray won a rapid victory for a bill to reimburse S W Langhorne and H S Howell nearly $2,000 paid as rent for a United States land office to Helena from 1885 to 1900. Pray defended the measure against Illinois and Georgia opponents arguing the two men paid from their own pockets and deserved repayment. The bill was favorably recommended and passed the same day.
Mrs Smiths displays new hats draw shoppers while Jos Hirshberg Co offers 20 percent discount on ladies shirt waists. The Guild meets Mrs Nat Collins Thursday May 19 1910. Local residents travel for land business and attend county high school board meetings amid ranch sale news in neighboring Valier and West Superior Wisconsin.
Arthur Hirchberg, an inmate at St. Josephs Hospital in Butte, underwent a nasal operation a few days ago to treat a lingering affection that troubled him for some time.
Jacob Lauffer an interested attendant at the land sale Friday purchased a section of school land near his home ranch.
Mrs Nellie R Brown relocates from town to a new home on her Priest Butte area homestead and plans to reside there in the future.
Rev G E Hutt of Dupuyer plans services at Brown school house May 17 Byoum May 20 Birch Creek May 22 at 3 PM. John Lyon buys Minnesota dairy cows from Paul Jacobson about 15 head and joins local creamery business. Eastern Star hosts Grand Worthy Matron Nellie K Thompson visit with about thirty members at a banquet after the meeting.
Assessor Cal Birford and deputies W D Luther and Percy Ferguson face workload increases as tax rolls grow. Luther reported Greenfields bench had 15 names but about 90 taxpayers. Brady area had 2 names with around 75 people. Countywide, voters and property valuations are rising significantly for the coming election year.
Extensive preparations are in progress for the annual art exhibit in the public schools directed by Mrs Sutton the art teacher on the last day of the term land proofs have been made so far this week before United States Commissioner A C Warner by P H Burreson and Paul Simonson Fairfield Anton Weibel and Harry King Bynum Wm M Hoxsey and Jas Calwell Elizabeth
Considerable improvements are underway in town. New walkways are being laid in front of the Hirschberg bank and store. Byron Carson is adding a new front to his shop. Additional minor upgrades include house painting and related work.
Rev. M. P. McCormack conducted Catholic services over Sunday as newcomers to Teton county grow rapidly. R L Taft, cashier of Cut Bank’s new National Bank, visited for the state land sale and praised Chateau and area. Chateau school district re-elected Prof. H. C. Thompson as principal with Mrs. Brown and Miss Russell teaching. Mrs. Sutton’s position in art and music is open. J C McCuaig returned to recover ewes after a sale by his herder during a sheep move, and remains at the Artostrong ranch west of Conrad.
Alex Truchot owner of the Tru Chot Estate buys 100 dairy cows from an eastern firm. Cows will be kept at Muddy Ranch north of Choteau with cream sent to the local creamery. Three thoroughbred dairy bulls accompany the shipment, boosting profits for the estate and supporting the Golden Red Company.
Bullerdick of the State University at Missoula won the oratorical contest among state colleges. A Montana Wesleyan student from Helena placed second. Archie Leech withdrew before the final. Kyle Jones of the State Agricultural College delivered a carefully written oration and was elected president of the state oratoria association for the coming year.
