Montana Stockgrowers Meet in Miles City 1887
The Montana Stockgrowers Association held its Miles City convention in spring 1887 with 300 to 400 cattlemen in attendance. Roosevelt defended the Interstate Commerce Act against a push to condemn it, and the meeting adopted a compromise to bracket the report while preserving Roosevelt’s stance. The gathering also addressed Indian raids, horse and cattle theft, and stockman records, with Roosevelt named to the executive committee representing the Dakota district and as escort for President-elect Joe Scott.

A provocative quip contrasts public personhood with gendered attire. The speaker notes a cultural divide between asserting influence and delivering commentary, while dismissing those who resist a gendered fashion standard.
