Buster Yeager Fights At Iwo Jima With USS Little

William Woodrow Yeager a 32 year old chief machinist mate USNR from Chateau Montana served aboard the USS Little during the first major Iwo Jima engagement. The Little moved within 800 yards of the beach to shell cave and mortar positions before exhausting its ammo and retiring with no loss. Yeager joined the Navy after high school and is remembered by his hometown as Buster.

Ray Robinson Receives Oak Leaf Clusters for Valor

Cpl Ray W Robinson aerial radio operator in a C 47 with a combat cargo group of the Tenth earned the first Oak Leaf Cluster for the Distinguished Flying Cross and the third for the Air Medal Major Gen H C Davidson announced Robinson who is 22 and son of Mr and Mrs A C Robinson of Agawam He has over 700 hours of flight time and has served 26 months in the Army including five months in the India Burma theatre Also mentioned is Mrs Isabelle Huisenga receiving the Purple Heart posthumously for her son Peter Huisenga who died in the Philippine fighting.

Navy Seaman Leon Lansing Visits Home Before Return to Oakland

Seaman Leon Lansing, longtime Chateau resident and former Ellis ranch worker, leaves today for McIntosh South Dakota to visit his parents ahead of resuming duties with the Navy in Oakland. He recently spent a year in Pacific battle zones including San Pan, Leyte, Iwo Jima, Mindanao and Lingayen Gulf aboard a troop transport ship that was struck by a Japanese suicide plane. His brother Pat serves with the Marines on Okinawa, and Virgil remains in training at Great Lakes Naval Station.

Music Festival Draws Praise In County Schools

Popular all county grade school festival in Cha teau last Friday evening drew praise for cooperation and music. Promoter Miss Esther Groger received compliments while Supt. W J Shirley urged more schools join next time. Children and teachers earned hearty applause.

State seventh and eighth grade exams set for May 9 10

County Superintendent Muriel S. Reiquam announced that the annual state seventh and eighth grade exams will be held in three county locations on Wednesday and Thursday May 9 and 10. Tests include arithmetic grammar spelling forenoon day one while afternoon covers agriculture civics music and art. Day two forenoon lists geography hygiene and history with reading in the afternoon.

VE Celebration Plans in Choteau

The American Legion announces VE day observances in Choteau with parade times set by flash of news. If announced 7:00 A M to noon all business suspends for the rest of the day and a 2:30 P M parade forms at the Court House. If announced noon to 7:00 A M suspensions occur all day with a 10:30 A M parade on Sunday. Flags to be displayed with cooperation from the American Legion and city officials.

Red Cross Drive Totals $10,016.46 for Teton County Campaign

The war-time Red Cross drive raised 10016.46, about two and a half times the county quota. Collins led with 717.00, followed by Dutton 2149.30 and Fairfield 1478.00 among many communities. Names listed include Mrs. Bessie Reiquam, George Sollid, and Mrs. H. C. Nyhus, plus numerous donors and workers.

The Seventh War Loan Drive shows optimism as county progress reports indicate at least 118000 of a 374000 quota subscribed. May 14 marks opening day. Teton High Band Heads to Conrad Music Festival

Pioneer Burton settler Lars Nasset dies of pneumonia

Lars Nasset 79 longtime Burton Bench resident and Farmington figure died last Friday at Deaconess hospital Great Falls after nine weeks patient there. Native of Borgund Norway he immigrated 1884 at 19 and settled Elbow Lake then Belgrade before joining pioneers to Burton Montana in 1895. He homesteaded the Beach landmark and played a leading role in church schools and roads. Survived by wife Louise Syse Nasset and daughter Mrs A E Breere with two grandchildren. a son died in 1920. Funeral at Trinity Lutheran Choteau with interment Farmington cemetery was largely attended.

John D Haviland The Bob Clark Ranch Suicide

John D Haviland age 60 committed suicide Sunday at the Bob Clark ranch on Deep Creek south of Chateau using a rifle. A Michigan native, he long worked as a ranch hand and sheep herder and was single. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Banks Funeral Home with Rev. Bert A Powell officiating. Interment followed in Choteau cemetery. Town comments expressed regret over his death.
