Dempsey Gibbons Title Bout Report Promoted for Shelby

New York May 1 Jack Kearns manager of Jack Dempsey confirmed talks for a July 4 heavyweight title bout with Tom Gibbons at Shelby Montana. Promoter Lou Molumby of the Montana American Legion said contracts will be signed soon, with articles set for New York or Chicago and a $100 000 purse plus a percentage deal. If the match occurs it marks two years since Dempsey last defended the title.

Choteau Post backs July Fourth Dempsey Gibbons bout Shelby

Choteau Post No 6 of the American Legion of Montana officially endorses promoting the Dempsey Gibbons boxing match at Shelby on July Fourth. The decision came at a business meeting before the all county gathering in Chateau for ex service men, with a committee appointed for the event.

Margaret Jacobson wins declam contest at high school

Margaret Jacobson took first place in the annual declamatory contest held in the high school auditorium last Friday evening with a clever interpretation of The New Neighbors a satire. Judges Mrs J I Cain E H Myrick and E R Lee of Fairfield also named Maybelle Anderson second for Bill and Phyllis Green third for The First Recital.

Glee Club Tour Of County Planned By High School Groups

Arrangements are set for a county tour by the high school boys and girls glee clubs starting May 2. Each town on the schedule will host musical and teaching programs with local staging and optional door charges. No costs are charged by the high school. The stops include Dutton May 2, Bynum May 3, Power May 4, Fairfield May 5, Farmington May 7, and Pendroy May 12.

Pioneer of Vigilante Days Passes On

Jacob Odenwald 80, longtime Montana resident and Vigilante era participant, died last Saturday from age related illness. Born March 3 1843 in Phillipsburg Germany he lived 57 years in Montana and worked as a butcher before settling in Chateau with his sons. He survived by two children a half brother a sister six grandchildren and a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were held at the Episcopal church with burial in Chateau cemetery.

Teachers’ Examinations Underway This Week In County

Teachers from the county districts gather in Chateau to take examinations conducted by the county superintendent today tomorrow and Saturday. Eighth grade exams for children are scheduled for May 24 and 25.

Rancher F M Blazer Dies by Suicide Near Choteau

F M Blazer, 76, rancher west of town, was found dead in bed with a bullet wound Sunday. Doctors said death was instantaneous. despondency due to long illness was noted. He had moved from Missouri to Montana in 1919 and was respected in Choteau. Survived by wife, daughter, brother, sister. Body sent to Maitland, Missouri for funeral.

Choteau Girl Editha Ste Claire Dies in Great Falls

Miss Editha Berni Ste Claire died Thursday morning at Deaconess hospital in Great Falls after weeks of illness. A native of Washington, she lived in Choteau six years and worked as a telephone operator before becoming a dental assistant. She is survived by one brother. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Methodist church with burial in Choteau cemetery.

Campbell Stir in Hare Formations Near Farmington Oil Showings

Campbell reports oil showings at the Farmington well near Farmington and a depth of 1640 feet in a hard formation. Drilling faced sidewall cave-ins in softer layers prompting potential eight inch casing while awaiting bit progress. Campbell hopes for a commercial producer and notes similarity to Agawam sulphur water depth.

Derrick work progresses on Gypsy well near Collins

Derrick construction at the Gypsy Oil Company's Collins well site seven miles west of Collins, Wyoming, is near completion. J L Brown of Brown and Bailey says the contract calls for a test and drilling to 2400 to 2600 feet if no production is found earlier. Crew will be ready to spud by next Wednesday with new equipment, then move to Pendroy for the Gypsy derrick at 4 27 6 once Collins is finished.

Carter People Secure Hodgskiss Lease South of Choteau

The Carter Of Co. and Wm Hodgskiss of Choteau sealed a lease for 640 additional Hodgskiss acres on the Rattlesnake Butte, six miles south of Choteau. This brings Carter total Hodgskiss land to 880 acres after adding 240 acres previously leased. Seen as a step toward a Rattlesnake Butte drilling contract and early exploration by the Carter company.
