New business places granted city permits in Chateau

City council approved permits for a Standard Oil service station two new houses a bar and liquor store remodel and gift shop and two residences in Chateau. Plans include a 25 foot front for the bar and liquor shop and a summer start. Dog ordinance section five sparked debate with 40 petition signers and concerns over leash rules and stray dogs.

Art Exhibit in Choteau by Trodick Studio

An exhibit from the Trodick Art studio Greet Falls will be shown at I Legion hill in Choteau on March 20 and 21. A large number of professional and estate paintings will be displayed with no admission. Lecture daily after noon. Home Demonstration club serves tea afternoon. Stearns to Retire as City Manager at Montana Power

Stearns will retire April 1 after 29 years as city manager for the Montana Power Co at Choteau. Enoch Stroh, formerly of Wishek North Dakota, will succeed him. Stearns 57, born in Great Falls, served in World War I and has been with the company since 1934. He plans ranching on state lands with his son in law and daughter.

Malone Purchases Large Residence At Everett Washington

EK Malone the Chateau rancher has bought a large house in Everett Washington where he is developing a truck garden project. He acquired land near water level on an island formed by a river and installed big pumps to remove water and guard against January floods. Development for truck garden use is planned over about three years with portions to be ready earlier. Mr and Mrs Malone will split time between Everett and their Chateau home for several months each year.

Public forum debates universal military training at Chateau

Four speakers at the Chateau high school auditorium argued for and against universal military training. The joint event by the Teton County Farm Bureau and local American Legion groups drew a large audience. The moderating pastor kept discussion orderly as plans for future Farm Bureau meetings were discussed.

Honor John Hentges For Colorado Work

The Lions club of Colorado Springs Colp recently held their 30th ladies charter night at the Brochoor hotel. They presented a pen and desk set to Mr and Mrs John Hentges formerly of Chateau for outstanding Community Service 1950 1951. Hentges has chaired the toy department of Christmas Unlimited for two years aiding over 1200 underprivileged children in El Paso county with repaired and repainted toys at Christmas. He was a charter member of the Chateau Lions club and has been a Colorado Springs club member for 34 years.

VFW Fish Derby Set for Sunday at Bynum Reservoir

The VFW annual fish derby takes place this Sunday March 9 from 9 am to 3 pm at Bynum reservoir. Cash prizes will be awarded in three divisions. Admission is 1.

Want Observers For U S Air Force Ground Corps

The U S air force plans a ground observer corps in the Great Falls region with volunteers to spot aircraft if radar fails. The Choteau Soroptimist club will collect names of interested adults and forward them to the air force for later instructions. Interested adults should leave their names at the Teton Plumbing and Heating store in Choteau.

Fairfield Band and Chorus Give Concert at Choteau

Fairfield high school band and chorus under Bob Johnson will present a concert at the Choteau high school auditorium tomorrow Friday afternoon starting at 2 o clock. The public is partially invited. Later Choteau's band and chorus will return the visit to Fairfield.

Battle Veteran Navs Soldiers Want Letters

Pfc. Thomas D. Tintinger, son of Mr and Mrs Carl Tintinger of Chateau formerly of Fairfield, returns from nine months of combat in Korea with the 92nd AFA Red Devils on a 30 day furlough. He holds the Purple Heart Bronze Star and three battle stars and received a certificate for service from May 21 1951 to Feb 5 1952 at San Yongni Korea. Tintinger urged civilians to write more letters to support troops.

Soil Conservation Day To Feature Hansmeier Speaker

The Teton County Soil Conservation district and the Soil Conservation Service host the second annual Conservation Day at the courthouse on Friday afternoon March 14 at 1 30 p m. Principal speaker M P Hansmeier extension conservationist from Bozeman will present slides on Turkey conservation and agriculture based on his two years of field work there and connect methods to local plans. The district supervisor will review past year conservation work and outline next year’s goals inviting farmers stockmen and business people to attend.

Stanford Man Named Manager of Elevator at Chateau

Ray Ballantyne formerly of Stanford was named manager of the General Mills elevator at Chateau succeeding I J Ferguson who retired March 1 and moved to Augusta to run a new grain elevator. Ballantyne has led the Stanford elevator for six years and his family will relocate to Choteau after school ends. General Mills is expanding with a large new elevator at Choteau and now operates feed gas and greases from the new office at the site of the former burned building.
