Where Indians got their paint before white traders came
A historical note on how Plains tribes sourced colors for face and body paint, describing yellow from distant yellow deposits, red from iron clay near Townsend, green from a Blackfoot south fork site, and black from northern petroleum-like deposits. It notes that younger Indians know little of these methods while elder women recall mixing, and explains painting as essential to ceremonies, war dances, and mourning.

Many Coyotes Slain in Musselshell Forest District
Approximately 125 coyotes have been killed this winter in the Musselshell forest district per Ranger D. C. Morrison. The record high coyote kill reflects increased trapping amid unemployment. A $7.50 bounty is paid per coyote. Snow is light, with deep snows in remote ranges. Roughly 3,400 cattle and 24,390 sheep are to graze across the district for 1932.

Hinsdale butcher contemplates Saco retail meat shop
May Open Butcher Shop near Hinsdale considers starting a retail meat business at Saco where no shop exists after the former establishment burned weeks ago. Windhorn, a longtime meat trader in North Dakota, previously ran independent markets before homesteading in Hinsdale. The Montana Seed Growers Association standardizes crops to at most three varieties and requires experimental proof a new variety is superior before listing it for use.

The Indian’s color quest and our own facial bravado
A church organizer is as central as a crepe veil to our people. The piece compares the Indian’s pursuit of bright paint to modern whims and wonders aloud whether facial stripes could declare mood or save trouble, reflecting on risky ventures for unsubstantial gains.
