Washington social life and White House receptions detailed
A longtime observer describes the White House calendar with six annual receptions, the seniority rules for guests, and how hostesses coordinate invitations. She recalls tours through the East Room and state dining room, the Marine Band, and the New Year open-house tradition. The piece also notes club life for congressional wives, social customs on visiting cards, and the balance of duties and personal life in Washington society.
