Pioneer Bar Robbed of Cash and Slot Machines in Choteau

Thieves broke into the Pioneer bar in Choteau early Tuesday, stealing a $1 and a 25-cent slot machine and about $300 in quarters, damaging a $750 machine, and taking a $75 22 caliber public safety item. Sheriff found a gutted machine dumped near Priest Butte. Local proprietors Joe Fallon and Sadie McDonald report frequent statewide slot robberies.

Property Values Teton County Assessor Sets Livestock Grains

Assessments begin next Monday March 6 as James Dellno county assessor announces forms mailed to all taxpayers. Values for livestock include sheep at 16 for purebreds bucks down to 5 for oldest, horses from 15 to 100, cattle from 50 to 150, hogs 12 cents per pound, chickens 50 cents, bees six. Grain values set at wheat 175 per bushel and oats 2.

Union Oil Spuds in Wildcat Near South Sweetgrass Arch

Union Oil Company spudded a wildcat near the South Sweetgrass Arch crest southeast of the Pondora field in Teton county. The No 1 Fornfeist test targets Madison lime above top formation with solid acreage held by Union, British American and General Petroleum and cost sharing by the last two. Nearest activity includes Sunburst sand production in Brady and Midway to the northeast.

Phillips Petroleum Starts New Wildcat Near Pondera Field

Phillips Petroleum began a second test in the Teton county area after a failure near NWNE SW 36-27N-5W. The Phillips-Freda Johnson No 1 well at NE NWNE 31-27N-4W lies a mile northeast of the failed well and 2.34 miles southwest of the discovery well that yielded oil with gas.

Fire Loss Leads Pendroy Couple to Community Aid

Mr and Mrs Bob McDonald of Pendroy report generous support after a devastating garage fire. A benefit dance at the Cornett hall a miscellaneous shower and other donations contributed about 1500 in cash clothing and items to help they say.

A robin was seen in Chateau early this week on February 27 signaling the arrival of spring. The same day a prospective fisherman brought a live grasshopper to the Acantha office for official inspection.

Martinson Rites Held Saturday at St Pauls Fairfield

Funeral services for Carl William Martinson 39 known Fairfield farmer were held at St Pauls Lutheran church with A B Holl officiating. Pallbearers were nephews Olav Johnson Thor Swenby William Swanson Henry Hanson Lee Blackerby and Roy Martinson. Martinson who died after a two year cancer illness leaves wife Signe Anderson a daughter Astrid Dehn and three grandsons Carl Richard and Sig A son Arthur Alex died at age two months. He came to the United States from Oslo in 1911 lived in Brian in South Dakota and Anaconda before settling in Fairfield. He helped organize the St Pauls choir and served in church offices and was active in Jegeren Lodge Sons of Norway No 256 and Greenfield Local No 39.

New Welfare Officer Appointed in Teton County

Gregory Jacobs, formerly of Billings, becomes supervisor of the Teton department of public welfare in Choteau courthouse replacing Donna Holm who resigned to live at Sun River. Jacobs comes from Cut Bank Glacier county office after five months and earlier worked with Billings city bus lines. He is a navy veteran and seeks a Choteau apartment.

A coalition of Choteau and Dutton businessmen met with the Montana State Highway Commission in Helena to press for the completion and oiling of the Dutton Choteau highway. They urged early programming of the project, citing the road as the county's top priority and noting its importance with the forthcoming Teton County Memorial hospital. Mrs Anna Bolland Dies. Rites Held at Dutton Lutheran

Funeral services for Mrs Anna Bolland were held at Dutton Lutheran Church on Monday. She died in Great Falls after a three month illness. Rev. A. B. Gravdal led the service and sang a Norwegian hymn. Pallbearers included Ole Rosholt and others. Born in Hesper Iowa April 4 1863 she lived near Dutton since 1911. Survived by five sons a daughter 13 grandchildren 6 great grandchildren and a sister. Buried in Dutton cemetery beside her husband Johannes.

Crew Leader Training Set for Chateau Census Office

Training for crew leaders at the Chateau Bureau of the Census office begins March 8 announced by District Supervisor Walter H. Marshall. A Bureau of Agriculture instructor arrives March 6 for a week of training, with leaders from eight counties and staff to learn census procedures before teaching enumerators starting April 1. Special agriculture irrigation and housing census training will be provided, with Lilliholm also teaching in Great Falls after Chateau duties.

Council Grants Two Permits In February

In a quiet February city council meeting at city hall Choteau approved a permit for Mon arch Lumber Co. to build a store and lumber warehouse on lots 8 to 11 in block 12 original. A second permit went to Chateau Feed and Seed Co. for a corrugated tin roof over its loading platform. The council also authorized purchasing a new type chemical fire extinguisher for the city fire truck and discussed filling in the street in front of the Hei Duits and Jim Jardmick residences.

Pad Campbell Weds in Falls At Our Lady of Lourdes

Donna Kansier of Great Falls became Mrs Patrick Campbell Jr at a quiet ceremony Saturday morning in Our Lady of Lourdes church. The bride wore a smoke blue gabardine suit with red rose corsage. best man was Harold Kansier. After a breakfast at Schell cafe the couple left for a state trip and will reside in Choteau where the groom works at the Choteau Acantha.

Augusta Men Fined 200 For Grouse Kill Near Augusta

Five men including Charles Welch Neal Jerome and Emery White were arrested near Augusta on February 3 for shooting sharp-tail grouse from a car on a highway. All pleaded guilty, fined $200 each plus costs, and had licenses revoked. The Montana Fish and Game report notes fewer arrests recently but warns poaching may rise with warmer weather.

Wheels Win Tilt Over Valier Squad

The Chateau Wheel basketball team defeated the Valier Independents 50 to 35 at Valier. Bill Perry and Dick Nordhagen scored 12 each to lead Wheels, who built a 27 to 20 halftime edge and stifled Valier to four points in the third period. Wright led Valier with 12 points.
