Calamity Jane Tells Own Life Story Found in Diary
The diary of Calamity Jane, attributed to the frontier figure, was found among the effects of late freighter Wills Sanderson. It recounts her youth in Missouri and the journey to Montana, with early riding exploits, battles with Indians, and her recruitment by General Custer as a scout, earning the name Calamity Jane after a fierce engagement near Goose creek in Wyoming. The text outlines her travels from Missouri to Virginia City, Utah, Fort Bridger, and battles through 1875 with Cust er, Miles, Terry, and Crook in pursuit of peace with the Sioux while guarding miners and settlers.
