CHIEF PETTY OFFICER JACK O'NEIL arrives in Chateau on a 30 day U S A leave with Mrs O'Neil and family. The veteran of the Pacific theater has been with the fleet at Okinawa and previously served 72 days at sea without land.
Cecil D. Yeager reports his son Wm. W. Buster Yeager chief machinist mate aboard the U S S Little was wounded when the ship was sunk off Okinawa during World War II. He endured a compound arm fracture a broken shoulder drum injuries and swam to a raft before rescue. He has suffered through five hospitals including Guam and Hawaii and is now in Farragut Idaho Navy hospital hoping to return to Bremerton to see his wife and son.
A Montana family learns that Cpl Jack Connelly of Great Falls is missing in action in Okinawa. He is the son of J W Callaghan a longtime publisher in Teton area and a well known newspaper man. His military unit and earlier life details are noted along with family addresses and a son, Jack.
The June 4 5 1945 session notes audit of county claims road and culvert repairs airport land purchase discussions and land reclassifications. Doughty named interim District Court Clerk as Daley resigns. Second day covers road equipment bids Porter townsite vacated and indigent care contracts. Special session renews Poor Farm operation and reappoints county physician and deputy. Quit claim deed to R R Swan for tax deed land.
Esther Winterfeld daughter of Mr and Mrs Gust Winterfeld and Alvin Senechal son of Mr and Mrs John Senechal were married at the bride's parents home in Anamoose North Dakota. Rev E W Zimbrick officiated with a single ring ceremony. The couple will live in LaMoure where Senechal runs a Gamble store.
Everett DeRusha has leased the former Chateau Hardware site on Main Avenue and plans a pool hall business there, aiming to extend facilities beyond The Club model. The move comes as J R Buss Collins sells The Club. Collins’ exact plans are unclear.
Sheep shearing thrives as June rains ease and yields remain clean. Steve Snyder works with small flocks while his sons Cecil and Sid run a crew at Hugh Robinson ranch. George Sprinkle and Bus Collins operate at D F Fabrick and Paul Parker ranches respectively, with Collins awaiting relief soon.
H F Bowman, longtime ranchman around Augusta and Rock Creek, advertises a public auction this Saturday at his ranch six miles west of Augusta on Willow Creek road. Sale starts at 1 30 p m with a large quantity of equipment. Bowman’s ties to Chateau and area are noted, and Pete Gilrdich Jr has bought Bowmans ranch.
The Board met at 1 P M and approved the reclassification of land filed by Mrs. Hodgskiss of Chateau Montana. It ordered some filings pending investigation. The Board also approved adjustments of assessments for lands owned by Paul C Kroop in Choteau Montana and by Hanna B Mundédale of Minneapolis Minnesota.
John S Jacobson longtime Chateau resident dies at Columbus hospital after sudden heart condition. Funeral service at Trinity Lutheran Cheau Friday at 2:00 p.m. He was born March 29 1891 in Madison Minn and leaves wife Stella Louise Fellars and children Nora Gebhart Pendray Dorothy Louise Ethel Christina Hazel Elsie Jennie Josephine Brewster Donald Edward in Okinawa. Several grandchildren and siblings survive. He worked 21 years with Shell Oil and local dealers.
Court house staff honored Miss Alice Woodgerd and Halvor Daley with a farewell party last Friday rain forced indoors. Alice Woodgerd resigns from public welfare to a Ravalli county post while Daley moves to the U. S. Trans Bureau. Daley departs July 1 and Woodgerd awaits a successor. Also visiting are Lt James Julius, Mrs Julius and infant Janice Rae from Franklin, Indiana.
A group of college students home for break gathers at Chateau. Names include Leah Ferris Marilyn Scott Herbert Anderson Audrey Averill Nancy Stenson Donna Faye Dauwalder and Dean Swenson a Montana State sophomore who traveled to Rochester for a nose operation.
Miss Margaret Wilson daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Wilson and John Groot son of the late Tom Groot were married June 10. The ceremony was by Rev A Bernard Gravdal witnessed by close friends. Margaret has been nursing at Choteau hospital and John works with John Richem operating a drag line in Chateau.
County Treasurer Gordon Monkman reports 93.89 percent of the 1944 tax total paid by May 31, with 32,336.45 delinquent. Delinquents may pay by July 14 or face tax sale certificates at the courthouse front door. Real estate payments 93.43 percent. personal property 99.69. Motor vehicle licenses yield funds for road and patrol accounts.
The Teton County Farmers Union invites all to the big annual picnic Sunday June 24 at Freeman Grove eight miles southeast of Chateau. A 2 p.m. program features athlete prize awards and an address by J. M. Peterson Polson. Paul Mathis chairs the event with Matt Decker as program chair. free coffee provided, attendees bring their own cups.
Lions Club led project to reopen Lions Municipal pool around July 1 with major improvements. Joe Briscoe oversees construction and summer program, assisted by Marilyn Scott. A new steel heating tank and fence will replace old structures while dressing rooms and the facility receive renovation and repainting.
The Montana Farmers Union hosted its eleventh Camp School at Fort Assiniboine near Havre from June 10 to 17 for the Educational Directory and teachers. Forty three delegates from 15 counties attended including Ton County members Mrs. Kit Divine and Mrs. Mildred Schwartz. The program covered education, writer's project, farm family living, insurance, land use, fieldwork, and crafts. Evening events featured entertainment, folk songs, moving pictures, and discussions.
The Office of Defense Transportation urged farmers and truckers to check and repair farm trucks now to avoid last minute garage delays. ODT District Manager Fred A. Noble cautioned parts and tire shortages may slow market supply, and garages need time to order replacements. DDT will assist in obtaining critical parts unavailable locally.

Reports show Montana leading the nation with 100.6 per cent in the Mighty Seventh. Teton drops to third as Liberty moves second to Daniels. Liberty 148 per cent and Teton 143.8. Fallon trails at 63 per cent with 27 counties over 100 per cent.
Lt. James P. Layman 29 from the Seventh Ferrying Group was killed when his light bomber crashed and exploded 18 miles west of Fairfield during a routine training flight. Cause unknown, investigation by Army officials pending. Witnesses reported seeing the craft burn after impact. locals recall possible buzz flying or engine failure. Layman, husband of June Layman, survived by two children. brother Wyman Layman in Portland.
