Sgt Henry Haralson 24 of Dutton died when a Japanese prison ship carrying captives sank in the China Sea on October 24 1944 news reached Ben Haralson his father. Haralson enlisted in the coast artillery in 1940 served in the Philippines was captured at Bataan in 1942 a Dutton High School graduate employed briefly in Great Falls he is survived by two sisters Mrs Robert Ellington and Audrey Haralson.
The War Department confirms Everett C Leach a prisoner of war lost when a Japanese transport ship carrying 1775 prisoners was sunk on 24 October 1944 in the South China Sea. General J A Ulio writes Mrs Pearl Campbell with the official notice and dates.
Lieutenant Arnold P. Neiswender of Collins Montana returned from a Caribbean duty with Navy Patrol Bombing Squadron 147. He piloted a Ventura search plane conducting long range day and night missions to spot enemy submarines and threats to surface forces. He is 26, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Neiswender and married to Billie Hood of Corpus Christi Texas.
Lt. Raymond A. Agee of Dupuyer Montana serves in the 27th Infantry Division during the Okinawa mopping up operations. He previously fought at Saipan where he earned the Combat Infantryman Badge and was wounded on Siapan earning the Purple Heart. Agee was hit June 25 and continues to lead a platoon of self propelled artillery in northern Okinawa.
Stewart W Wallinder son of Mr and Mrs Peter Wallinder of Long Beach California earned the new air crewman wings after completing torpedo bomber flight training at U S Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale. He is an aviation radioman third class and was awarded the wings by Captain Louis E French at a ceremony marking training across stations. Wallinder previously worked for U S Customs Patrol before enlisting in December 1943 and attended North Montana College. His wife Betty L Wallinder and two children John and Joyce reside in Choteau.
A clipping from a Seattle paper reports Milton Harold Van Auken 19 fireman first class USNR son of J H Van Auken of 7783 17th Northwest serving on a heavy cruiser. The ship bombarded Okinawa targets and supported invasion troops while fending off enemy planes as gunners fired from AA batteries.
Pendray native David H. Larson, drafted February 1941 for a year of training, has returned home after more than four years in the army. He recalls training at Fort Lewis and Pear Harbor, service in the 218th field artillery of the 41st division, and the New Guinea to Nassau Bay landing with heavy sea conditions and losses.
The Bureau of Mines begins large scale test drilling at Choteau to evaluate magnetite ore on 1,080 acres. Partners include Charles Kolstad and associates aided by Great Northern Railway geologist C R Ranney. Ore samples show 33 to 59 percent iron with titanium oxide and other elements. uranium and radium in associated sands.
Mr. and Mrs. W J Hightower visited Chateau from their Blackleaf district ranch. He recalls working as a puncher for Sands & Taylor known as the ST at the southeast Chateau ranch now run by Bryan Corbett & Sons. He notes ties to future Montanans from Wesleyan Helena in the 1890s and served as state brand inspector in the 1920s. His son Jim Hightower, once active in FFA at Teton High, is now in the family ranching business and Mr Hightower Sr is a Montana Cowboys Association member.
Harold, a serviceman, recalls improvements in materials and equipment before his Philippines landing. He was at San Boango when recalled for return to the states for discharge. Now back at the Harry Swan son ranch, he contends readjustment to civilian life will take time.
Morris Teterud son of Mrs. Della Hyatt owner of the Par Way cafe in Chateau arrived June 17 on leave after 20 months of Navy duty in the Pacific as a quartermaster on the U S tanker Pecos. He has served across the Pacific including Siapan Philippines and Okinawa. He left Teton High in 1943 to enlist at Farragut and soon went to sea. He must return to Los Angeles July 7 aboard his ship and has booked a plane, keeping him in town only until July 6.
In a telegram Lt Walter Tennant told his parents Mr and Mrs George Tennant that he arrived in the United States on June 26. He recently received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in the field of battle and Major General Bryan E Moore sent a letter of pride and congratulations to the Tennants.
Pfc. Carl Wm Carlson of Fairfield was killed in action on Okinawa Island May 14 1945. He was the son of Leonard Carlson of Fairfield and nephew of Oscar Carlson of Chateau. His wife and three children live in Newport Washington. He enlisted July 21 1944.
The Chateau Odd Fellow and Rebekah lodges host a Sunday picnic on July 1 at Freeman Grove. Cars depart Beaupre hotel at 11 for grounds. those without transport should arrive then. Free coffee provided. attendees bring their own dishes. An informal outdoor program with games and horseshoe pitching begins, and all members and families are invited.
Rev. Bert A. Powell was re-appointed at the Great Falls Methodist conference, continuing as pastor of the Chateau Methodist church and the Pendrey and Bynum churches. He will not oversee the Dutton church, as Rev. Andrew Olson will assume the Dutton-Bradye charge. Powell’s churches were reported in excellent condition and he remains in charge of the work.
Thirty 4-H leaders and friends will meet at the Baker ranch in Te ton canyon for a weekend of fellowship recreation and inspiration beginning Saturday at 4 p m The program includes a picnic supper table games a lodge program with singing stunts and folk dancing Sunday offers fishing time and a ceremonial meal followed by postwar planning led by R B Tootell head of the agricultural economics department at Agricultural Experiment Station Bozeman and a closing business session
Work on the new Legion building in Chateau is progressing rapidly but officials say completion by the planned Fourth of July opening is unlikely.
The Choteau Lions Club elected officers led by new president John Dunckel an experienced coach at Teton County High School. Other officers include C D McDonald first vice president C G Passmore second vice president C G Monkman secretary W W Scott treasurer Rev A B Grandal lion tamer Maurice Zimerman tail twister and George Jackson C B Wedum two year directors. Holdover directors are W J Shirley and H J Briscoe. The retiring president Robert Savage said duties begin next meeting.
The annual Farmers Union picnic at Freeman's grove drew strong crowds from across the county on a sunny day. Art Habel of Dutton presided as county president, with State Senator Paul Rice and J. M. Peterson delivering speeches about current themes and farm outlook.
J R Armstrong chairman of the local war price and ration board warns that June 30 is the final day to obtain slaughter permits under the new meat control order. Permits, issued at the ration office in the courthouse, carry no fee and are required to sell transfer or give away meat.
Shirley S Ford 58 a Minneapolis banker and Sun River native died suddenly of heart trouble in Minneapolis. He rose to preside over the National Bank and Trust Co of Minneapolis after leading Great Falls banks. The body returns to the Falls for burial in the Sun River family plot with funeral set for Saturday.
Advertisements list dances on July Fourth at Mountain View Garden Claude and the Aragon at Fairfield. Community groups promote festive events with scheduled music and dancing for Independence Day.
