President Roosevelt urges scrap rubber collection as Teton county residents respond with service stations acting as depots. One cent per pound paid for tires, bulk plant dealers rush rubber to factories, proceeds aid USO Navy relief Army and Red Cross. WPB Salvage committee leads with USDA War Boards cooperation.
The Spokane Chronicle reports Theodore Saylor and Marjorie Price wed at First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Paul Calhoun officiated. Bride wore white crepe chiffon with a lace yoke and fingertip veil. bouquet of white gladioli and pink roses. The couple will live in Seattle where Saylor works in war effort.
The annual Farmers Union picnic will be held next Wednesday June 24 at 10 a.m. at the Henry Freeman picnic grove south of Chateau. A prominent speaker has been secured and prizes totaling $30 will be awarded. Everyone is invited to attend.
The speaker praises unnamed individuals and a Valier man. He extols a set of farm buildings sight unseen, noting reports from the grapevine about the owner who would part with his fine layout only for a noble compliment. He asserts some things cannot be bought.
Plans for pre cut and prefabricated grain bins to hold 100 million bushels of wheat were issued by the Commodity Credit Corporation. Montana will receive enough bins to store 10 million bushels with four sizes at four prices. Eligible farmers may buy with cash or note secured by a mortgage repaid from first commodity loan or AAA payment. Bins without buyers will be erected by county AAA committees for CCC wheat storage.
The Civilian Defense Council met at the courthouse on Monday night to organize war program efforts. E. L. Kleffman was chosen controller and W. J. Shirley executive officer. Gus Thompson auxiliary fire chief. Marshall King auxiliary chief of police. J. W. Breen chief warden. H. W. Bateman chief of medical services. Obert Peterson chief of public works and roads. Frank Stearns Julius Mozer and Mrs. Hattie Waynild in charge of public utilities. S. N. Halvorson rural fire chief. Mrs. Larry Banks Red Cross instructor. Training will be run under John Dale with volunteers advised to contact H. M. Daley, E. L. Kleffman, or W. J. Shirley. Training must be completed by August first. Army representatives will review results at course end.
Incumbent B. I. Packer filed for county attorney on June 13. Emery Knowlton and John P. Anderson, precinct committeemen, filed June 15. R. A. Clearman, justice of the peace, filed June 10. Otis Mellon filed June 12. A. O. Longmuir and Cora Cohoe, Committeewoman No. 1, filed June 16. S. L. Dahl and Harriett Morgan, Committeeman No. 7 and Committeewoman No. 7, filed June 17.
The first of a series of free dances will be held Saturday night June 20 at the Legion pavilion. Financed by Chateau business houses they contribute weekly to cover the orchestra. Emerson Miller's Orchestra will provide music and all residents of Chateau and surrounding communities are invited.
Mr and Mrs R E Nelson announce the engagement of their daughter Mildred Louise to Robert E Bergman of Mountain Iron Minnesota. She will graduate from the University of Minnesota nursing school this month and finish work in November. Bergman a US maritime school graduate is chief radio operator on an oil tanker in the Pacific. Plans set for a November wedding.
The Montana Highway Patrol chief Charles L. Sheridan warns that rubber shortages mean only 3 to 4 years of available tires. Driving at 35-40 mph can yield 50,000 miles per tire and lowers risk as tire supplies run tight. He urges reduced speeds to conserve tires and lives.
Plans are to open the Chateau Swimming Pool on Saturday as repairs on the floor continue. Officials say the work should finish soon and the pool is expected to provide another good swimming season.
Nick Wellenstein of Pendroy passed away Monday at Conrad Hospital from a throat infection. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church with Rev. J. F. Schulte presiding and Banks Funeral Home in charge. Burial was in Chateau cemetery. Survived by wife Iona West of Spokane, a sister Mrs. Wm Goggin of Butte, and brother Wm B Wellenstein of Pendroy. He was born Sept. 6 1887 in Helena, moved to Teton county in 1916, educated in Helena, and was a longtime ranching figure and Elks member.
The selective service men slated to leave by chartered bus Sunday will receive a royal farewell. The Moose Lodge hosts a Saturday dance at Moose Hall with lunch and beer, and on Sunday a 7 to 8 a.m. breakfast before departure under the county USO committee.
Trinity Lutheran of Chateau holds divine services at 9 30 and Sunday school at 10 15 with Luther League at Martin Swanson home. Ladies Aid meets Wednesday June 24 with a joint meeting and pot luck. Dutton Lutheran offers a children's service at 11 15 and Vacation Bible School activities. Ladies Aid meets Thursday June 25 and a Sunday school picnic is planned for Saturday June 20. Joe Belgum serves as Student Pastor.
The Choteau Chamber of Commerce announces a large Fourth of July event with dances at the Legion pavilion on July 3 and 4. A pet and hobby parade leads the morning festivities followed by street sports with prizes in Victory Stamps or Bonds. A noon picnic at the city park offers free coffee and cream.
Collector of Internal Revenue Lew Penwell announced $5 use tax stamps for motor vehicles go on sale June 10 1942 in all post offices and IRS offices. Stamps must be bought by July 1 1942, are serially numbered and affixed to the windshield with the make model and serial number recorded for gasoline rationing identification. Members should dampen the windshield to avoid damage and record the stamp serial number for future reference. Cash post office money orders and certified checks accepted. stamps to be placed inside lower right windshield corner.
