Choteau public and high schools gain a 15 mill levy approval by district 1 voters, adding about 316,000 for teacher salaries and maintenance. MEA wage standards cited. funds cover one fiscal year to June 30, 1948. chairman Earl Hollar thanked supporters for backing the measure.
Teton county farmers and ranchers are urged to attend hearings on forming a soil conservation district. Sessions are at Chateau courthouse 1:30 pm Wednesday, Fairfield Movietone theater 8:30 pm Wednesday, and Dutton Women’s club room 1:30 pm Thursday. Experts would be provided free by the U S Department of Agriculture to aid landowners, with no obligation to use the services.
The June American Legion Auxiliary meeting was held in the club room. Reports on the Belt district convention were given. Officers were installed and new members initiated. Muriel Reiquam was elected delegate to the department convention in Billings. Other delegates were Duane Baker Dorothy Reiner and Clarice Conklin. The initiation team inducted new members and past district president Mrs. Stuart Myers received a pin. Department President Helen Wallace appointed Bert T. Packer to a committee.
Bobby O'Neill won first place in a youth talent program at the Chateau Methodist Church run by the Intermediate Youth Fellowship. Beverly Monkman took second with a piano solo, while Jean Rausch and Gay Marie DeRusha tied for third with vocal and piano performances. About $45 was collected from the event to support the church pledge.
Kay Ferris six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Rollie Ferris of Chateau is hailed by Montana State University officials as an outstanding free hand artist. Judges say her work equals the quality of a competent ten year old artist and Kay studies in Mrs Elmer Erickson's kindergarten class.
Kenny Thompson and his nine piece dance orchestra will play for a dance this Saturday night in the American Legion pavilion at Chateau. Dancing will be from 10 until 2 o'clock. This will be the only dance in this area on Saturday night.
The county plans a public auction tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Chateau to sell all Teton County high school property for 48000 dollars. The sale requires full cash or staged payments with 20 percent down for 1000 plus, four percent interest on deferred terms, and a quit claim deed issued on completion or bid acceptance.
Denzil McDonald of Choteau was elected president of the Citizens State Bank of Choteau succeeding the late Pat Crossen. Robert Gronberg named to the board to fill the vacancy. McDonald has served with the bank since 1927 after the merger with Stockman’s Bank, starting as a clerk in 1920.
Mayor John Hentges and his wife returned from a 111 week automobile trip across the eastern and central United States visiting their son in Colorado Springs and friends in Cedar Falls Philadelphia Washington New York Detroit and Gillette They observed no national recession but noted plant layoffs from lost contracts while domestic and foreign markets remained strong They began the trip March 18 and the mayor attended the council meeting after his travels.
The Episcopal Guild will gather Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs Lee Brown for a church group meeting on June 12.
Dr J A March physician surgeon opens a private practice in a white house office behind city hall opposite Chateau Acantha. He will serve Teton county residents with daily hours 9 30 to 12 and 2 to 5, Saturdays 9 to 11. Office leased from Everett DeRusha. past roles include ship surgeon in the South Pacific 1942 44 and prior surgical residencies in New York and New Jersey before nine years in private practice.
Montana State College conferred bachelor of science degrees on 184 graduates in its fifty-first annual commencement. Local students included John Wesley Gibler of Chateau with high honors in agronomy, James Dyer Jr of Augusta in industrial engineering, Muriel Eileen Reiquam of Collins, Mary Edith Willick of Dutton in home economics, Charles Leland Cascaden of Dutton in physical education, and Charles William Reiquam of Collins with high honors in pre medical work.
Mr and Mrs Bill Goggin of Butte attended to ranching interests at Pendrey over the Memorial holiday and were in Chateau briefly visiting friends.
Staff Sgt. Clarence Ulch, previously of the Great Falls recruiting office, is assigned to supervise the army recruiting office at Chateau. He succeeds Chester Coffing, who returns to Great Falls. Ulch, married to Eloise MacDonald of Chateau, is a Fort Wayne native who served in Alaska with the cold weather testing detachment. He joined Great Falls recruiting six months ago and recently attended a Carlisle Barracks recruiting school before his Choteau assignment last week.
Scholastic honors and campus leadership were awarded at Montana State College during a Scholastic Honors and Senior Day assembly in Bozeman. Dr. Renne announced Teton county winners: William Reiquam of Collins joined Phi Kappa Phi. Nancy Stenson of Chateau became a Pi Gamma Pi member and Mortar Board nominee. Mary Willick of Dutton and Rachel Batch of Fairfield joined Phi Upsilon Omicron. Raymond Agee of Dupuyer joined Alpha Zeta.
Club secretary Clyde Darby said the Chateau Trap and Gun Club will hold another chicken shoot on Sunday afternoon June 15. The event will feature shotgun prizes on ticket sales as in prior editions.
Rain restores moisture across Teton county after a month of little rain. Power and Pendray reported good precipitation, with Choteau receiving about half an inch since last Saturday. Dutton and surrounding areas saw limited rainfall though. No major hail damage occurred due to early season timing. Most regions still need more moisture for crops after May's dryness.
Regular meeting of C. James Smith Post No. 6, American Legion, set the installation of officers as the main business. J. W Breen named commander for 1947 1948 with Fred Meadows first vice commander and E C Hensley second vice commander. Additional posts include C D McDonald treasurer Richard Conklin chaplain John Davison historian Cornelius Kooyman sergeant at arms and G E Monkman adjutant. Members later joined the Legion Auxiliary for a program and lunch.
Melvin Mast, junior case worker for Teton county Department of Public Welfare, attended a northern Montana institute for welfare workers in Glasgow. He becomes welfare department supervisor at Chateau, succeeding John Keneeny who moved to Deer Lodge. Mast came from Wolf Point where he held a similar post. He has worked for Kaiser Co in Vancouver and the AAA office in Thompson Falls and Kalispell, and hails from White Sulphur Springs where he studied.
Clara Carson Howard 51 of Wenatchee Washington and formerly of Choteau died this week in a Wenatchee hospital. She was born and raised in Choteau and married Frank Howard November 25 1920 there. The couple later lived in Seattle Spokane and Swenatchee and she was a member of Eastern Star American Legion auxiliary Lady Lions and the Episcopal church. Surviving are her husband Frank son Donald of Wenatchee and brothers Edward Sidney Corson of Wenatchee and Roy Corson of Seattle.
County Treasurer Gordon Monkman announced that total tax charges for 1946 amounted to 578 872 18 by May 31 1947. Personal taxes totaled 44 564 72 with 86 50 unpaid. Real estate charges reached 534 307 46 with 25 398 21 delinquent. 1946 real estate receipts were about 1 percent above 1945. For 1947 1 764 car licenses 1 440 truck licenses 91 trailer licenses and 3 328 drivers permits issued.
A newly organized American Legion baseball nine from Choteau will play their first game this Sunday against Shelby juniors. The opener is at Selby. Local hurlers are Larry Dellno Bill Ferry and Cliff Swanson with infielders Bob Dahlin Jack Fahey Harold Hinman Clinton Mills Ken Bannon Jack Henneford Ray Nordhagen and Swanson. Beverly Cohoe of Fairbanks earning the title skating champion supreme received first prize silver skates with wings and gold skates plus her name engraved on a gold cup. The event highlighted the annual Fairbanks Ice Carnival with a brief winter ice program.
