Past Commander Merrill to Speak at Memorial Day Service

Robert Merrill, former national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will be the principal speaker at a Memorial Day observance at Chateau cemetery tomorrow morning. The 11 a.m. service will proceed at the cemetery unless rain moves it to the high school auditorium.

22 Confirmed By Bishop Tuesday Night at Saint Josephs

The Most Rev. Joseph M. Gilmore Bishop of Helena administered the sacrament of Confirmation to a class of 22 adults and children at Saint Josephs church Tuesday night. He was assisted by several priests including Rev. Halligan Delaney Moroney and Scheidler. Recipients included Gilbert Malataire Floyd Murr Richard Sangray and others. A Catholic Ladies auxiliary banquet was provided for the bishop and clergy at the parish rectory.

District 1 Seeks Extra Funds for Teachers Levy

District 1 voters are urged to vote this Saturday May 31 on a 15 mill levy to fund MEA minimum teacher salaries next fall. The special election runs noon to 6 pm at the grade school with judges Mrs George Seuffert Mrs H B Swanson and Mrs Louis DeWitts guiding the process. Approval requires a majority of votes cast.

Train Strikes Coupe Near Choteau Depot Injures Two

A Great Northern branch line train hit a 1942 coupe at the crossing south of Choteau depot injuring two women, Mrs Anna Luinstra and Mrs Harry Luinstra, who escaped with shock and minor injuries. The car was dragged 77 feet onto the depot platform amid a high wind obscuring the warning.

Women's Club Installs Officers At Candle Rite

Newly elected officers of the Chateau Woman's Club were installed at a candle lighting ceremony in the Methodist church during the club's regnar meeting. Cora Cohoe was named president with Edna Aver as vice president Dorothy DeRusha secretary and Duane Baker recording secretary. Musical numbers featured Laura Dion Janet Huffman and Sandra Sue Hanusa. Tea by Mrs Frank Stearns and committee followed. District convention set for June 7 at Cut Bank with Cohoe and McDonald elected as delegates.

Auxiliary Schedules Pan American Night Meeting

The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a monthly meeting in the club room on Monday night June 2 at 8 oclock. A program and installation of new officers are planned with a picture on Columbus, musical numbers, and a talk by Mrs Karola Woodhouse of Fairfield who spent eight years in South America. Members are urged to attend and stay for lunch.

Two Chateau Youths Enlist in Army for Alaska Duty

Kenneth A. Burlingame and Richard R. Bandow, graduates of Teton County high school, enlisted in the U S Army for Alaskan theater duty. They were sent to Fort Ord California for processing and assignment and will enter finance training after about a week. They requested Alaska as their assignment and enlist for three years with GI Bill benefits for up to four years of college education after service.

Choteau Lions heard Dick Fabrick and Ray Weller speak on soil conservation and an oil conservation district in Teton County. A June 11 hearing in Chateau will decide district formation. attendance urged. Weller previewed the Taions district convention in Great Falls June 19–21 with multiple events. Chateau youths Mary Ann Breen Marjorie Barton and Bonna Lee Maynard performed piano pieces. Secretary Monkman reported Lions in third place in district 370 honor points. letters of appreciation were read.

Power High School District Bond Election Scheduled

A bond election for 85000 to improve Power high school facilities has been set for next Thursday June 5. Voters within districts 30 74 22 44 and former 59 may vote if registered and taxpayers. Amortization bonds with an 2 percent rate would start at about seven mills and decline as principal is retired. Polls open noon to 8 p m with 40 percent approval required.
