Dr. H W Bateman veteran Cho teau physician and Lions charter member was elected District Governor of Lions District 37C at the Calgary convention. Nominee Leo Murphy cited Batemans service as mayor and senator with a long medical career begun in 1907. He served in the Spanish American War and in World War I, and now retires on a ranch north of Chateau.

Gratton Funeral Rites Held Last Friday at Fairfield
George Anatase Gratton died in Fairfield May 24 at age 90. He was buried from St. John’s Catholic church with Rev. Thomas Fenlon officiating, burial in Sunset Hills. Survived by wife, two sons George and Oscar C., four daughters, 33 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. One son Patrick was killed on Luzon April 9, 1945.

Choteau high school band earned praise at the Lethbridge music festival. They traveled Friday to Canada, performed in a street concert, joined a downtown parade, and impressed as one of the festival’s top bands. Local groups helped fund the trip and Ellery Crary served as festival queen candidate. The band members enjoyed the journey and hope to return next year.

Former Choteau Resident Ella Loomis Dies in Yakima
Ella Loomis 68, longtime Choteau resident, died May 25 after a long illness at Memorial hospital Yakima Washington. Funeral services were held Saturday in Yakima. She lived in Great Falls before moving to Yakima three years ago to live with her son George T. Loomis. In Great Falls she worked at Hub-Thisted Clothing Co. Survived by son George and granddaughters Judy and Janet Loomis of Yakima.
