Choteau Ball Team Wins Second In Mountain Valley Tournament
Vaughn defeated Choteau 4 to 1 in the championship of the Mountain Valley Little League tournament in Choteau last weekend. Kelly Schriner limited Choteau to six hits with seven strikeouts as Vaughn grabbed a 3 1 lead after a two run double by Harris in the second inning. Choteau had earlier advanced by beating Lincoln 13 to 4 and Augusta 16 to 3, with strong hitting from Mike Arensmeyer and Ken Spinder. In the semi final, Choteau beat Augusta 11 to 6 behind Keith Van Setten who struck out 11 and Spainder with multi hit games. Trophy honors went to Vaughn first, Choteau second, Cascade third, Fort Shaw fourth, with Simms winning sportsmanship.

Services Held For Mrs. Zion In Great Falls
Mrs. Fred A. Zion died July 21 in a Great Falls hospital at age 89 after a convalescent stay. Funeral and graveside services were held in Great Falls with Rev. Jack H. Severns officiating. She was born in 1881 in Dunseith Indiana and trained as a nurse before marrying in 1911. The Zions farmed in Montana before retiring to Great Falls in 1959. Surviving are sons Forrest Scotty Zion James Zion and Robert Zion a daughter Catherine Tacke 16 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

David Shannon, 24, of Dutton, and Jim Cheetham, Dutton businessman, filed this week to run for the Montana Constitutional Convention on the Republican ticket. Shannon, a 1969 Cornell University graduate and U.S. Army veteran, advocates saving Montana from decay he attributes to Eastern urban America. Cheetham seeks District 15 coverage over Teton, Pondera, Toole and Glacier counties. Filing closes August 5 with the Secretary of State in Helena.

County Extension Agent Mike Goodwin notes swathing has started in the Dutton area with some grain already harvested. Winter wheat near Chateau should be ready this weekend as dry weather accelerates ripening. Rain will aid late seeded spring wheat and barley but not other crops. Range grasses are dry and stock water is scarce. soil moisture is low across Montana. Spring wheat 40 percent good, 50 fair, 10 poor. 60 percent turned with 5 percent ripe. Barley and oats turning fast. 60 percent turned, 5 percent excellent, 55 good, 30 fair. First alfalfa hay cut nearly stacked. wild hay two-thirds harvested. yields below last year.
