City to operate on 41.35 mill levy for 1971-72

The City Council approved a 41.35 mill budget for 1971-72 down from 41.80 mills last year. Garbage disposal funds rise by 15,091.52, with plans for a new landfill north of the airport and possible contracting for dump maintenance. New sewer service charge set at 10 percent of water fee. Police car, salaries, and street costs also budgeted.

Choteau Art on the Green Show Declared a Hit

The outdoor art show in Choteau drew 58 artists and sold about $5,000 in artwork over two days in the city park. Jaycees chair Adrian Dargan said the event will become annual and Western artist Ace Powell of Kalispell forecast the show becoming Montana’s largest within three to five years, attracting buyers and artists nationwide.

Crazy Day Costume Contest Set With $125 In Prizes

Chateau Chamber of Commerce urges public participation in the Crazy Costume contest on July 31. Prize money totals 125 with 80 for costumes and 30 for children's prizes. prizes awarded at 4 p.m. Dick Conklin hosts hourly merchandise drawings and old time dance music. Huck Finn Day set for Choteau park Aug 1

Sunday, Aug. 1, Huck Finn Day will be held in Choteau city park. Ben Hoge leads the event, sponsored by the Choteau Jaycees. Registration starts at 10 am with fishing until 2 pm and $250 in prizes for best fishermen and best Huck Finn costumes. Refreshments follow for participating children. Over 100 youths typically attend.

Dry Weather Hurting Crops in Montana

Warm dry conditions over two weeks dried topsoil across Montana. Virtually all regions report short topsoil moisture. Spring grain development hastened with some fields already burning. Winter wheat colored seventy percent. harvest mainly from late July to early August. Spring wheat shows five percent excellent, 45 percent good, 40 percent fair, 10 percent poor. 25 percent colored, 65 percent headed and green. Grasshopper damage light. stockwater ponds draining. grazing prospects fair to good.

Former County Resident Berhard Hanson Dies at 74

Funeral services were held July 12 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gresham Oregon for Berhard Hanson a former Chateau area resident who died July 7 in Troutdale Oregon at age 74. He was born January 2 1897 near Crookston Minnesota and moved with his family to Farmington and Fairfield before relocating to Oregon in 1930. Hanson worked as a carpenter and later owned and operated motels along the coast. In 1968 he and his wife Lenora moved to the Gresham Troutdale area after a long heart condition. Survivors include Lenora his wife a daughter Mrs Ronald Stone Troutdale a son Leonard Hanson McMinnville three brothers Fred Great Falls Henry Woodburn Oliver McMinnville sisters Mrs Ellen Swanson Great Falls and Mrs Nina Jenner Harbor eight grandchildren.

Voter Registration To Close Aug 5

County Clerk Mary N. Baker announced that voter registration closes at 5 p.m. on Thursday August 5 for the September 14 primary nominating election. Eligible voters must register at the clerk’s office or before a deputy registrar, notary public, or justice of the peace in the manner provided by law. Persons 18 or older, U.S. citizens, Montana residents for one year and county residents for 30 days may vote if registered. Those who did not vote in the 1970 general election must re register if not already done.

The $901,500 Skyline Lodge Retirement Center ground breaking was held in Choteau with D. P. Fabrick chairing. Local leaders and visiting officials spoke on building safe housing for the elderly, the project’s FHA financing, and community benefits for residents and former locals returning to town.

Candidates for Constitutional Delegates Must File by Aug 5

The 1971 Montana constitutional convention will have 100 delegates from 23 districts. Candidates may file as party nominees with $15 to the Secretary of State by Aug 5 or run independent with petitions totaling 5 percent of the last district's legislative vote, filed by Aug 4. Independent petitions must stay within one county and require 339 signatures.

Group Forms To Fight MP Rate Increase In Montana

A consumer affairs council-led opposition forms to challenge Montana Power Company rate hikes on electricity and gas. Clyde Jarvis says legal action will seek rate reductions and protest to the Public Service Commission over a single hearing August 23. The group seeks more time for preparation and invites open membership and inquiries via Helena address.
