City council approved permits for two new residences and a store. A sewer survey discussed found excess water in storm and sanitary sewers and proposed test holes in Chateau’s north and west sections. Insect spraying funding and library-building talks with a Woman’s club were noted.

ROTC Cadet Purkett Joins Summer Camp At Hamilton Field

Roger J Purkett, Montana State College student, attends a six week summer fourth Air Force ROTC encampment at Hamilton Air Force Base California. He is among 520 cadets from 15 colleges in the eight western states studying air force administration and logistics as part of a four year program toward a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve.

Jim Jackson Weds Shirley Brelsford In Butte Ceremony

Jimmy Jackson son of George Jackson married Shirley Brelsford daughter of Mr and Mrs Bob Brelsford in Bozeman. They are recent Bozeman College freshmen with plans for university study in Missoula. Jackson works at Trident thirty miles from Bozeman.

Montana Crop Output Expected To Exceed Last Year

Montana agriculture officials forecast 1950 yields 25 percent above 1949 for 12 major crops with overall production 14 percent above the 1939 48 average. Wheat output seen at 83 068 000 bushels from 4 815 000 acres, with winter wheat 20 percent winter killed and acreage reduced by allotment reestablishment.

Voter turnout 57 percent in last week’s primary in Teton

Final returns show 1 792 ballots cast, 57 percent of qualified voters, down from 2 750 (88 percent) in the two years earlier. Republicans 956 to Democrats 836. Local races include Standish vs Rice for state senator and several county posts.

Last Rites Held For Young Man Drowned in Lake

Funeral services at the Methodist church in Choteau for Donald Elwood Smith 31 who drowned at Helmville July 15. Rev H L Engdahl officiated with burial in Choteau cemetery. Smith lived in Choteau Helena and Helmville 1941 mechanic and war veteran. Survivors include wife Hazel Stansberry Smith mother Florence Smith and seven children.

1600 Acres of Weeds Sprayed By County Crews in Past Year

A county weed district report shows 1949 operations sprayed about 1600 acres at a heavy application rate on rail lines irrigation canals highways and county roads covering about 1665 miles of road. The district supplied 118 farms with small power sprayers on loan and 110 farmers agreed to clean cultivation for 1219 acres. The 1949 50 budget totaled 16987 with 12690 98 spent leaving 4296 02 plus 1593 27 refunded to the general fund.

Choteau Sailor Heads to Mediterranean Cruise

B L Mitchell seaman USN of Choteau poised to arrive in the Mediterranean aboard destroyer USS Hawkins after a two month voyage in northern European waters. Highlight includes Edinburgh Scotland visit with Beating Retreat ceremony at Edinburgh Castle as part of a Northern European force deployment under Admiral Conolly. The Hawkins will join the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean under Vice Admiral Ballentine for two months of further duties.

School Building Construction Set for Spring

Superintendent R C Graham told the Lions club plans for Chateau school building remain uncertain due to war, with construction likely to start next spring if conditions permit. He outlined statewide teacher shortages and the need for graduates to train as teachers, plus pending school legislation on bonds and a county levy.

A fair crowd enjoyed the three act comedy at the Chateau high school auditorium directed by Helen M Terrill and sponsored by the Chateau Veterans of Foreign Wars Joyce Curtis as Marianna Mic Coy stole the show with a strong cast including Beverly Moser W Earl Hollar Jane Hamilton and more. Additional entertainment featured Ellen Jaconetty a chorus of eight and special numbers by Helen Davis Jean Raymond Lois Davison Barbara Iguda and others Playgoers hope for more home talent productions due to the evening's success.

Conrad Legion to Face Choteau This Sunday

Conrad Legion meets Choteau American Legion Juniors at the Choteau diamond Sunday at 1 pm. Last week’s seven inning clash favored Conrad 7 to 2 as Powell fanned 13 with no walks. Errors hurt Choteau with six errors to Conrad’s one.
