Two Mile Wide Hail Storm Ravages Teton County Crops

A severe hail storm swept a two mile wide belt from Bynum Reservoir to east of Chateau Montana last Saturday shredding alfalfa barley and wheat. Some fields resembled a winter landscape with four inch deep hail drifts. Chateau escaped hail as the storm moved eastward.

Gus Kuehn Dies From Dynamite Blast Near Fairfield

Funeral services were held at St. Pauls Lutheran church in Fairfield for Gus Kuehn a 52 year old farmer who died from injuries after a delayed dynamite blast at his Fairfield ranch June 5 He was born August 24 1897 in Russia and came to Fairfield in 1937 Survivors include his wife Helen six daughters seven sons two brothers two sisters and 12 grandchildren He was a member of the Eagles lodge and the Montana Cowboys association.

Aunt Lilly gay comedy set for Chateau stage

A gay comedy Aunt Lilly will be staged next Wednesday night July 26 at 8 pm in the Chateau high school auditorium under VFW Post 4605. Helen Tirrell directs a cast of local performers with V. Earl Hollar as Aunt Silly and Chris Beck as Senator Pendennis Pompous. Other roles include John Davison as Mayor Harvey June Hamilton as Ruth Harvey Lois Davison Kenneth Sulgrove and more in a romantic and whimsical lineup.

New Well Brought in On Trevillion Lease

A new well on the Trevillion lease in Teton county near Pendroy produced ~60 barrels after initial acid treatment and may reach 100 barrels after a further 5,000 gallon acid push. Nearby wells include Phillips-Freda Johnson with ~30 barrels daily during a six week test and Bouma with 15 barrels. An 3,000 acre block between Johnson and Trevillion under Texas company and Phillips Petroleum leases is seen as productive. All members of the former Bynum Methodist church congregation and the former Woman's Society of Christian Service are asked to meet at the Bynum church this Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock. Rev. Harold L. Engdahl will lead the discussion on pertinent matters.

Methodists Plan Smorgasbord Dinner July 29

The first annual Smorgasbord dinner is set for Saturday July 29 from 5 30 to 9 PM in the new Methodist church dining room. It offers three courses with varied appetizers meats potatoes salads desserts and Scandinavian cookies. Attendees may eat all they wish and pay what they feel the meal is worth with proceeds to the church building fund.

Dr C W Boussard Returns From Miami Elks Parade Victory

Dr C W Boussard returned Sunday from Miami where he played with the Great Falls Elks drum and bugle corps. The group won the national Elks parade championship for the third consecutive year and later enjoyed Havana sightseeing with six fellow band members. A special homecoming was held in Great Falls last Sunday.

Teton Selective Service Board to Resume Operations Soon

The Teton county selective service board will soon be reactivated to recruit for all four military services. The county board will open when a suitable headquarters and staff are found, with Jess Gleason as a member alongside Harry Swanson and C. B. Turnbull. The state chairman notified Gleason of the move as more than 50 boards statewide prepare for rapid reactivation.

Man Severely Injured in TNT Blast Near Chateau

Olaf Peterson of Creston Iowa a 50 year old single man employed as a well shooter for the National Geophysical Co was critically injured Tuesday by a dynamite blast. He was placing a second shot in a seismic hole on the Batesman ranch west of Chateau when the charge exploded 18 feet underground. His right hand was shattered and later amputated at a local hospital. He suffered severe facial injuries and one lung collapsed. He was taken to Columbus Hospital in Great Falls in serious condition.

Lawyer Speaks To Taxpayers At Farmington

Attorney Phil Greenan of the Greenan Manion firm spoke to the Farmington Taxpayers Association about the school bonds, which have been sold, and the likely path to the state supreme court regardless of district court rulings. Members urged law changes to share title to the high school building among contributing districts and proposed representation reforms for the high school board.

Holt suffers skull fracture after horse kick at Chateau

Robert Holt owner of Holt Chevrolet Co. was kicked in the head while handling a colt. The skull fracture is not believed serious and Holt is expected to return to work within a week to ten days after a brief fever.

Teton PMA Sets 1950 Loan Rates for Small Grains and Flaxseed

The Teton county PMA committee announced basic 1950 loan rates per bushel for No. 1 wheat 1.81, barley 1.02, oats .63, rye 1.13, and flaxseed 2.35. Loans and purchase agreements run through January 1951 with eligibility tied to allotments and grade standards. A 7 cent storage bonus applies if wheat is loaned and delivered when loans mature April 30, 1951.

Six Young Men Enter Service of U S Navy

Six Chateau youths left for military service this week after enlisting for four years in the U S Navy. Don Arensmeyer Walter Edwards Don George Paul Mitchell and Graden Green departed Monday for San Diego. Tom Liscum sailed Wednesday for Helena. Some reserve army service calls are reported from Teton county though the full list is hard to compile. The local selective service board does not handle reserve recruiting. The army air corps reserve sent telegram inquiries to Nordhagen Curtis and Gronberg, with no definite call yet.

Conrad Junior Legion to Battle Choteau Juniors Sunday

The Conrad Junior Legion team travels to Choteau for a Sunday game at the ball park starting at 1 PM. Last week Choteau fell 10 to 5 to the Simms town team, with Powers and Lyle George as Choteau’s battery and Lee and Chapman forming Simms’ battery.

Fifteen Choteau boy scouts travel to Camp Napi on Lower St. Marys lake in Glacier Park for a session through Saturday. Fairfield Coast to Coast store bought by Choteau men

Jim Jarolimek and Ed Obermolte purchased the Fairfield Coast to Coast store from Don Harte. They plan an August reopening with remodeling and new furniture offerings while keeping the same merchandise mix. Obermolte will run the Fairfield store with Jarolimek.
