Teton county plans a 1950-51 budget with expenditures of $459,693 and receipts of $204,533. A county-wide 33 mill levy would raise about $255,000. General fund with 135 mill levy seeks $109,620 from taxes and $47,482 cash fund, plus various fees. Road fund uses 10 mill levy with $68,400 from taxation and $37,000 in auto licenses.
Supt. R C Graham announced most Choteau teachers are secured for fall with one fifth grade post to fill after Merrill Mann resigned for navy service. Hensleigh and Alf resignations cleared. Lorraine Hockett and Robert J Sandemark named as replacements in commercial and music. Nellie N Merrick to lead elementary and eighth grade.
Choteau will gain a 24 hour airport with lights auto turning on 20 minutes before sunset and off 20 minutes after sunrise. Hans on Electric Supply Co. won the $3,599 bid to install 32 main runway lights plus beacon and wind cone. Project funded as a county city federal aid effort with start plans around mid August and completion within three months.
The Choteau Legion junior squad will play the Simms town team on the Choteau diamond this Sunday at 1 o clock. Fans are urged to attend the game and a possible second contest is being attempted. The Conrad-Choteau Legion junior game last Sunday was rained out. At Bynum the Choteau town team lost 24 to 23 in a pitchers duel despite Choteau's 27 hits to 7 for Bynum. Brittian and Delano hit homers for the longest hits of the game.
The Fairfield 4 H county council held its second meeting with a schedule of upcoming events. Council meetings occur on the second Saturday of January April July and November. voting is by one club leader plus the one member. The Great Falls fair runs July 31 to August 5 with exhibits urged. County achievement day is August 22, state club congress the last week of August, and 4 H Recognition day on Saturday October 28.
Last week's Acantha published incorrect sheriff totals. Fairfield results should read A. O. Peterson 73 votes and Bob Clark 30 votes, while Power Peterson had 27 to 4 for Clark. Carl Wedum returned Sunday from a two weeks fishing trip at the Kinda ranch on the north fork of Flathead Jake.
Mrs. Jack Broders of Chateau narrowly escaped harm when a lightning bolt struck the kitchen of the north side home last Friday. The blaze damaged an electric light above the stove and burned another upstairs light while the couple sat in the front room. Jack Broders shut off the master switch as they watched the fire and smoke fill the house.
The Teton Memorial Hospital association board opened bids from eight firms to furnish interior equipment for the new hospital. Hundreds of items will be purchased and the board may take several days to select the best bids.
The agriculture department set a 1951 production goal of 1.15 billion bushels, 193 million more than this year and 119 million above the 1939-48 average. The plan aims to ensure a safe food margin, possible exports, and more livestock feed to spur meat milk and poultry output.
Mrs. Claire Hensley of Cho teau elected state department historian at the Montana American Legion convention in Helena last week. A World War II veteran and member of the Chateau Legion post, she served as a WAC first lieutenant in the air corps at Jackson Mississippi and Mobile Alabama.
The American Legion Department convention for Montana was held in Helena from July 22 to 26. Four couples from Chateau attended: Mr and Mrs Al Hensley, Mr and Mrs Jay Robinson, Mr and Mrs Paul Kropp, and Mr and Mrs LeeRoy Anderson. A memorial service was held at the Helena Civic Center with Chaplain Reverend James D. Skinner. General Taylor spoke at the Tuesday banquet on universal military training and communism, while Mrs Iona Zgoda won the page prize for a Montana history book and Mrs Claire Hensley was elected department historian. Barbara Hutton addressed the auxiliary in place of the absent national president.
Douglas Crary of Fairfield Jack Strong of Choteau and Dean Sala of Choteau are named as Marine corps reserve members called to duty. Sala will report for duty next Wednesday.
The Episcopal Guild of St Stephens will gather in the city park on Thursday August 10 at 1 30 pm. Members and their families are invited and a pot luck meal will be served.
The U S forest service at Chateau is clearing and maintaining mountain trails hampered by snow. Pilot Maurice Moe of Palmer Springs Flying Service in Great Falls flies fire-spotting missions for a three year contract with Palmer Springs Co. Fire danger remains low due to a wet season and high green grass. Radio repairman John Amunson, an engineering student at Montana State College, flew to Gates Park to fix a radio for a lookout on Bear Top mountain.
The Teton County Selective Service board opened new offices in the Byrne building and will begin active Salt Lad tee operation in about two weeks. Virginia Sabo, formerly with Great Falls National Bank, is the board clerk. Office hours extend to tomorrow then close for two weeks while she is away. Young men will not be called until after Aug 18, and records from Chateau are now on file in Great Falls and back in Chateau. Exemption rules note service on active duty between Sept 16 1940 and June 24 1948 for 12 months or more.
Kenneth W. Christian and Charles D. Fulton, FHA supervisors for Teton county, attended a Bozeman meeting to map plans for the coming year with state FHA staff and county supervisors. The three day session emphasized Better Farming for Better Living and enhancing on farm supervision. State Director James A. Keane noted rising demand for farm housing loans and strong activity in private insured mortgage lending for family farms and operating loans. In Montana, 44 farm housing loans totaling 257,870 dollars have supported improvement, replacement or erection of farm dwellings, with about 140 additional families applying and many approved by county committees.
Lexa-Trevillon No 2 in the Pondera field pumped 200 barrels of net oil on a 24 hour test after acidizing and swabbing. Lexa Oil Company moved a second location, spudding No 3 Trevision, as geologist E. R. Enmrick reported a favorable Lederer No 1 and No 2 offset wells. Several nearby wells show activity but no other completions were recorded that week.
Dr. George Crary aged 75 longtime Camas Montana physician and brother of the late Dr. E J Crary of Choteau was buried in the Crary plot at Choteau after a family graveside service at 2 p m Monday conducted by Rev H L Engdahl. He died Friday.
F. W. Downs relief agent for the Railway Express Co. at Dutton was arrested at Great Falls last Saturday on grand larceny. He is held on 1500 dollar bond and is accused of writing checks to buy a new car used on a trip to Alaska. He is to appear before Judge R. M. Hattersley August 18.
The Humble clan gathered at Jones Park in Dupuyer for a family reunion and picnic, marking the first reunion in 28 years. Members listed include multiple Humble siblings and cousins from Bynum, Cut Bank, Conrad, Darby, Porterville, and beyond, tracing ties to Teton County's 1892 settlement.
