Sun River Project Picnic Set For July Weekend

The ninth annual Sun River project picnic and celebration will be held in Fairfield on July 29 and 30. Events include an 8:30 p.m. Friday show at the Sons of Norway hall with Ells Dance Band, a Saturday night program, and a Sunday lineup featuring baseball games, a picnic dinner, address by Lieutenant-Governor Hugh Adair, talks by O. S. Warden and others, horse races, a concert by Chateau Municipal Band, and various acts from Truman Goldberg to Captain Joseph Harbison. Admission ranges from 35c to 75c for different events, with proceeds supporting project exhibits at the North Montana State Fair. The American United Shows carnival will also be on site.

Choteau Odd Fellows Visit Valier Lodge Event

About 120 Odd Fellows and Rebekahs with families from Valier and Choteau gathered at Jones Memorial Park in Dupuyer Sunday July 2 for a lodge sponsored picnic. Judge R M Hattersley gave the principal address as games including tug of war horseshoe pitching and nail driving provided added fun.

Ohio School Teachers Narrowly Escaped Death in Crash

Four Akron teachers on a westward vacation survived a severe accident 16 miles south of Chateau on the Augusta road when a tire blew out causing their Plymouth sedan to roll end over end six times. Miss Erdie Wolfe sustained a severe back strain, Miss Gladys Waldkirch a badly sprained ankle, Miss Ella Lawler a broken arm and several broken ribs, and Miss Marie Galloway a broken rib. Lawler faces around six weeks in hospital. others to be released earlier. The wrecked car was towed to L. E. Taylor Garage.

Railroad Board Orders Hearing on Gas Charges

The Montana-Dakota Utilities Company must appear at a public hearing at the Conrad courthouse on Friday August 18 to show cause why gas rates in Chateau Valier and Conrad should not be reduced. Hearings will also be held in Glasgow August 14 Hinsdale and Malta August 16 on gas rates amid informal complaints about rate reasonableness. The commission directs the utility to justify or justify rate reductions at the hearings.

Winner Leaves to Accept University of Idaho Associate Professorship

H A Winner resigned from Teton County High School to take an associate professor position in vocational education at the University of Idaho Moscow. He and his family left Ames Iowa for Moscow with his start date set for August 1. Known as Herb by residents, he earned a master in vocational education from Iowa State College and built a strong reputation as a top vocational agriculture instructor during four years at the school.

Roberts Funeral Home sold to G L Banks of Cut Bank

The Roberts Funeral Home transfers ownership to G L Banks of Cut Bank who will operate as G N Banks Funeral Home in Choteau. Banks, former Burns Funeral Home manager, arrives with plans to occupy the upstairs and take over duties from Chas Roberts who and his wife came to town in 1929. Roberts intends to relocate after a vacation, while Banks brings embalming experience and a Chicago training background. The city fiscal report shows year end June 30 1939 cash balance of 7787.45 with total resources 70210.54 and net cash worth 67329.05 after district bonds.

Funeral Rites Held for Milton Gibler Here Wednesday

Milton E. Gibler born June 12 1872 in Lynchburg Ohio died July 23 1939 in a Great Falls hospital after a lingering illness. He lived in Olney Illinois and Dutton Montana where he helped found the Dutton Cooperative Elevator and served as president. Survived by his widow Laura, daughter Florence Weddle two sons Ray and Bill and eight grandchildren funeral services were held July 26 in the Choteau Methodist church with interment at Chateau cemetery.
