The District Babe Ruth tournament runs Friday to Sunday in Chateau with Havre Lewistown and Tri County all stars. Opening 6 15 p m features Lewistown vs Havre, followed by a 1 30 p m Saturday Tri County vs first game's winner.
Montana Power requests a 34 percent increase for natural gas and 17 percent for electric service. A public hearing is scheduled for August 23 at 10 a.m. in the Senate chambers of the capitol, Helena, with testimony open to interested parties. The company cites inflation and plans a $61 million three year investments, hoping for approval within six months.
Earl M. Berthelson, a Conrad businessman and longtime Pondera County resident, filed Monday for the Republican nomination as delegate to the Constitutional Convention from District 15 covering Teton Pondera Toole and Glacier counties. He said he is qualified to serve the region.
The AT and T Co report mailed to over three million shareholders notes use of recycled paper for the publication, with 7,400 Montana recipients. Mountain Bell cites recycling goals for directories, printing that last year used 200,000 tons of new paper and urges a higher recycled fiber content to save trees and reduce pollution.
Choteau to host its first Art on the Green exhibit this Saturday and Sunday July 17 and 18 in the city park. Adrian Dargan Jaycee chairman says 100 invitations sent with many more exhibitors expected including Ace Powell Kalispell Ruth Blair Great Falls and Ben Sams Missoula. Highlights include a two day Raku pottery demonstration by Ben Sams and Martin Holt with possible hands on participation and a TV newspaper coverage goal to launch an annual event and boost Choteau as an Art Capital of Montana.
Salmond range school featured Dick Cosgriffe of the BLM describing rest rotational grazing for range improvement. The program explained plants store food in roots, allow recovery after heavy grazing, and the aim to maximize grazing then rest to reseed, build litter, and reduce erosion. A five pasture scheme was outlined with stocking rates tested to determine carrying capacity. Extension Service training text No 4 and Forest Service guidance were cited for further reading.
Choteau Lions Club swimmers competed at the Montana Junior Olympics in Butte. The team earned 35 awards across all age groups including two diving golds and multiple silvers and bronzes. Standouts included Theresa Scott and Denise Weinert with top times, while relay squads showed strong showings. Coach Wayne Krahe thanked parents for transport to Butte, with Fort Benton Invitational next weekend.
Choteau sent 16 swimmers of 55 to a novice meet sponsored by the Cut Bank Optimist Club on July 10. Cut Bank won with 320 points, Choteau 164, Conrad 142, Dutton 132, Walier 70, and Fairfield 34. Kathy Scott led Choteau with freestyle and breaststroke wins in the midget division.
Longtime Collins area farmer Clyde D. Baquet died Monday at Pondera County Hospital at age 83. Funeral services are set for today Thursday at 2 p.m. Wise Funeral Chapel Conrad with Rev. Lewis Pratt officiating. Burial in Hillside Cemetery. Pallbearers listed. He was born November 8, 1887 in Unionville Missouri and came to Montana in 1913. He married Sadie King in Billings August 12, 1914. Survivors include son Eugene Dutton and daughter Mrs Emil Schlepp, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren, among others.
A public groundbreaking ceremony is set for Friday July 16 at 1 30 p m at the site of the Skyline Lodge Retirement Center in the Perry Tract just west of Neighborhood Grocery Chateau. out of town guests from Helena and Great Falls will attend along with donors and residency applicants. The three story building will be 60 feet by 382 feet with 80 units each having a bath and light kitchen. Services include housecleaning dining laundry and linen. completion is scheduled in one year. Afterward attendees may visit the lower Legion hall for free coffee and cookies.
The Chateau Chamber of Commerce schedules Crazy Day for Saturday July 31 with $80 in costume prizes and hourly drawings starting at 2 p.m. Merchants will register customers for prize drawings and offer specials as music plays at the drawing site downtown. Prizes include food items garden tools and dry goods with additional children's category prizes this year while adults compete for first second and third place.
Choteau Jaycees plan Huck Finn Day for area youngsters with Ben Hoge as chairman. The event offers 200 in prizes for fishing and costume contests, free hot dogs and pop at 2 p.m., plus a grand prize for the largest fish and prizes across age groups and best Huck Finn costumes for a boy and girl.
The annual Farmers Union picnic for Teton Pondera and Cascade counties takes place Sunday July 18 in Fairfield Park with a noon potluck. Rolls ice cream coffee and punch will be furnished. Lowell Rasmussen from Plentywood and Ray Graham from Great Falls will speak.
Teton County NFO will meet on July 15 at 8 p.m. in the courthouse in Chateau. A very important grain meeting will follow the business meeting. All members are urged to attend and bring a non member.

Montana crops show winter wheat 10 percent color, 75 percent headed, 15 percent in boot with 10 percent excellent and 90 percent good to fair overall. Spring wheat weaker with 10 percent excellent, 70 percent good, 20 percent fair. barley and oats mostly good. Sugarbeets and potatoes in generally good condition with 85 percent thinning complete.
Chateau Scout Troop No 51 returned from Camp Napi near Glacier Park with top honors. They led daily campsite inspections, won the week’s honor for best arranged camp among 14 troops, captured the Treasure Hunt and Aquacade titles, and five scouts plus Scoutmaster Patton earned Order of the Arrow taps.
