Aerial crop dusting on surrounding fields damaged most trees in the Chateau cemetery with curled leaves and odd large foliage. Soil conservation officer W H Vance says weed spray caused the injury and forestry experts expect recovery next year.
Don O'Brien of Chateau Mont. led Provident Life Insurance in the thirty sixth anniversary campaign earning a memorial plaque and a $160 cash award. Bil Piechowski and Don Thompson placed second and third. The firm has reps from Minnesota to Washington with results paced like election tallies.
Tourists watched in bemusement as four elephants from Cole's and Walters Circus paraded down Main Street Cha teau yesterday. The group, promoting performances across Montana, traveled in a 33 vehicle caravan and drew a crowd at Antler Bar where a patron remarked on drinking prior to the sight.
Hospital admissions list includes Elizabeth Nesbit Choteau Shirley Jane Kasper Fairfield and other patients. Births note a son for Mrs Samuel George Choteau and a daughter for Mrs Herman Bouma Choteau. Dismissals include Mrs Worbert Jensen and infant daughter Chotesia and others.
Mr and Mrs Charles F Tesch and their two children from Hettinger North Dakota visited Mrs G C Passmore and the Teschs over the Fourth of July holiday weekend with other relatives.
In the Pondera field westward area operators Hannah-Porter Dakota-Montana and Winkler & Sons report new outpost sites and late 1952 drill results. The Gebhart No. 3 well shows 2350 feet Madison acidity tests with 3000 gallons, initial swab at 100 barrels and no water. Other wells listed include Rose, No. 2 Gebhart, and No. 1 Davidson Porter with multiple spuds and acidizations, marking continued activity in the district.
The ground observer corps in Chateau area calls for more volunteers as Operation Skywatch goes 24 hours. Chairman Cowell Scott says there is a critical need to man 300 posts and two filter centers to defend Montana and 25 other states, with a meeting at Chateau city hall Friday 8 p.m. to recruit volunteers.
Mark A. Hitchcock 65 of Vaughn died suddenly at his home last Sunday morning after a heart attack. A war veteran, he served four years in the navy and belonged to American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts at Fairfield. He is survived by his widow Sylvia, two daughters Donna Belle Baker of Seattle and Scott Robinson of Auburn, a son Clarence of Fairfield, three brothers Bill of Chateau, Lester of Lewistown and Ralph of Fairfield, five sisters Ruth Biessler of Galem Oregon Marie Tucker of Portland Ambre Jacobs and Anna Belle Gilbert both of Harrisburg, Ore and Bila Starr of Lebanon, Ore. He had lived in Vaughn and the beach country for 18 years after coming from Lewistown.
The Social Security administration will not advise an insured worker when to file an old age benefit claim. The Great Falls Montana office explains that under the new start provisions effective April first, a person can become fully insured from 1950 work, and those in covered work since 1951 begin April 1. At age 65 a retirement claimant can file in July and have payments computed under the new formula.
U S S Valley Forge, a 27000 ton aircraft carrier, has returned to the United States after seven months in the Far East. Bruce R Hart, aviation chief electronics technician USN, serves aboard with fighter squadron 52. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Louis L Hart and husband of Jacqueline Frisbee of Power. The ship docked in San Diego on July 3 after a third Korean area tour.
District court term starts tomorrow at 10 am with criminal cases including State of Montana vs Albert Rochman and Abraham Carrier. Voter tallies show Democrats leading Republicans in statewide races and the home-proposal passing 1342 to 442 with near-complete county turnout.
Dr. C. W. Boussard of Choteau and Ira Perkins of Bynum were members of the Great Falls Elks Drum and Bugle corps competing for the national title in New York. Dr. Boussard is expected back in Choteau this weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lucier visited Missoula last weekend to see her parents.
Across two weekend crashes east of Fairfield six automobiles were involved with no serious injuries. Saturday's four car collision began when Jerry Fornall of Fairfield stopped for water. Jack Goldberg collided with Yarnall, assisting residents and Jesse Bleecker. Jerry McCormick of Big Timber rear ended Bleecker. Citations issued for Fornall, Goldberg and McCormick. Sunday a Pontiac driven by Wes Sheble of Chateau was heavily damaged. Victor Hoxey of Fairfield turned left into its path, injuring several occupants and damaging the truck slightly.
In a November race preview Hugo Aronson of Cut Bank defeated Leonard Young in the Republican primary on Tuesday, sealing a showdown with incumbent Democrat John W. Bonner in November. Arnold Olsen won the attorney general battle over James Freebourn with an anti gambling platform, while Wesley Castles emerged as the Republican nominee to oppose Olsen.
Chamber of commerce members were briefed on the Grain Terminal Association GTA plans for a 50 000 bushel elevator in Chateau built for the terminal association not the Farmers Union. Brown noted potential delays due to carpenter shortages and that GTA operates elevators in 600 communities from the Great Lakes to eastern Washington and is not affiliated with farm organizations.
Nineteen Chateau Bay Scouts from Troop 51 attend a July camp at Camp Napion in Glacier Park. Ralph Hickman and Arnold Hanusa accompany the group, transported by Jess Lantz’s school bus. From July 13 to 19, about 150 scouts from the North Central Montana council participate, with Troop 51 to visit the Many Glacier area for one day.
Fort Benton avenged a prior defeat by beating Choteau Independents 16 to 11 in a high error game at Choteau. Choteau rallied for five runs in the ninth but Fort Benton built its lead with three in the first, four in the second, and five in the third. Fort Benton’s Henrikson and Farrell each had three hits, Lehnert and Bandow contributed multiple safeties, while Dick Bandow and Duane Reisch shared pitching duties. Also noted was a strong error-influenced start and a later resilient showing by Choteau in the late innings. A Fairfield junior Legion game is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday. Lt. Danny O’Neil, on leave from San Antonio, has been transferred to Anchorage and left for Alaska today.
