Montana Power seeks big rate hike in electric and gas

Montana Power Company asks the Montana Public Service Commission for electric rate increases totaling 7.698 million dollars and natural gas increases of 8.266 million dollars before taxes. After taxes and negotiated contract increases, the company expects net gains of 4.681 million on electric operations and 4.13 million on gas.

18 Year Olds Now Eligible For Voter Registration

Teton County Clerk Mary Baker was advised by Secretary of State Frank Murray to begin registering U S citizens aged 18 or older. The 26th Amendment, effective June 30, 1971, ensures young citizens may vote in all elections. Montana now requires no separate 18-year-old registration files.

Bert S. Dahl Services Held

Funeral services for Bert S. Dahl, Augusta area rancher, were held Tuesday July 6 at the Community Church in Augusta with Rev Edward Ferguson officiating. Dahl, 82, died July 1 at Chateau Betty Chamberlain. Burial was in Augusta Cemetery. He was born May 9, 1889 in Bismarck North Dakota and moved to Augusta at 17 to ranch. Survivors include brother Dr Cc W. Dahl Augusta and two sisters Mrs Carl Liedholm and Mrs L C Beck both of California.

Art on the Green exhibit set for Choteau park

Plans for Choteau’s first Art on the Green progress, with a two day show in the city park July 17 and 18 from 10 am to 6 pm. Artists include Ace Powell Ben Sams Martin Holt plus participants from Phillipsburg Whitefish Gardner Great Falls and the Blackfeet Art Foundation. Adrian Dargan will appear on Today in Montana July 13 for details.

County Farmers Receive ASCS Set-Aside Payments

Teton County farmers have received checks totaling nearly 406000 for 1971 wheat and feed grain set-aside programs. Preliminary payments began July 1 and continue as producers certify to program requirements and data is processed. Nationally, about 2.5 billion in preliminary wheat and corn payments is expected in early July with final values determined by July 1 to November averages.

Russell Wiseman a Choteau native and 1969 Choteau High School graduate earned the Air Medal the Air Medal with V device and the Bronze Star for heroism in Vietnam as crew chief of an unarmed UH-1 helicopter He volunteered for an emergency extraction in Quang Tri Province guiding pilots aiding two casualties and later returned under fire to extract more wounded earning commendations and continuing service at Hunter Army Air Field Georgia.

Crowds Flock to Choteau July 4 Parade Rodeo and Fireworks

About 3,500 attended the 26th annual American Legion rodeo in Choteau on July 4, one of the largest crowds in years. Cowboys faced tough stock while grandstand seats sold out within 30 minutes. The parade, floats by the Chateau Library Page Club and Chateau Jaycees won prizes, and the fireworks show ended with grass fires near Chateau airport despite a drought.

Teton County Receives Final State Transportation Reimbursement

Dolores Colburg announces Teton County will get 13987.58 as final state transportation reimbursement for elementary and secondary schools. Districts in the county total 27136.67 for the school year. State payments cover one third of basic costs. remaining funds come from county and district taxes.

Blood Drive Draws 79 Pints at Chateau Event

Seventy nine pints were collected at last week's bloodmobile drawing at Chateau. The drive surpassed quota by 14 pints and featured first time donors including Ann Gronberg Kris Wilkerson John Chane Rachel Field Paula Truchot Mary Rathman Curtiss Wilson Richard Ferris Stuart Moulton Francis Phachetka Katie J Wipf and Rebecca P Wipf. County Extension Agent Mike Goodwin urges rain for Teton County fields. Wheat is burning and needs moisture to protect crop prospects. June rainfall has been scant at .80 inches, mostly barely measurable. Haying started early due to dry weather, with first cut not expected to be strong and second cut tied to upcoming moisture.

Fireworks Fund Reaches Goal in Seventh Consecutive Year

Choteau residents and sponsor groups rallied with last minute donations to meet the fireworks fund goal for a seventh straight year. Donors include Mr. and Mrs. G. O. Stott C. K.
