Bar owners and police in Chateau area expect similar rights for 19-year-olds starting July 1. Chiefs and tavern owners emphasize ID checks and responsible serving while noting limited immediate business impact due to housing money and job availability.
Mrs. Lena Bremer of Collins dies Monday in a Great Falls nursing home at 78. Funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. in Choteau United Methodist Church with Rev. Grant S. Moore officiating. Interment Sun River Cemetery. Born February 7, 1877 in Pittston Pennsylvania, she came to Montana as a child and later homesteaded near Collins. Survived by son in law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Lee Revear.
Montana rancher and Air National Guard lieutenant Larry Lindseth ejected safely from a Delta-wing F-102 after the jet lost power about ten minutes after takeoff. He prayed before bail out as the aircraft crashed eight miles northeast of Tiber Reservoir. he reached Roy Lohr ranch, then Malmstrom AFB hospital and was released that afternoon.
Mrs Chester Abbott became president of the Chateau and Vicinity Soroptimist Club at a Saturday installation banquet in Conrad. New officers include J C Salmond as vice president and Jack Reiding recording secretary with several others named. Incoming and outgoing officers were announced with remarks by Thelma Nauck and Ellen Hammond initiating a new member. Mrs Gerald Stokes delivered the keynote speech and will compete in an international event in Phoenix in July.
Bob Bennett an Eastern Montana College student and EMC Retort news editor will serve as intern editor at the Acantha for several weeks. An Arkansas native and Vietnam veteran he came to Montana during service and plans a career in journalism.
The 26th American Legion Rodeo opens at 2 p.m. Sunday as part of Choteau's July 4 celebration. Festivities begin July 3 with a 7 p.m. jackpot roping and end with a fireworks display on the Fourth. Nearly 100 cowboys and cowgirls compete for over 3000 dollars in prizes. Notables include Benny Reynolds and rodeo stock by Reg Kesler. Parade features out of town groups and a China delegation. floats prize money totals nearly 300 dollars with a 100 dollar grand prize plus other placements. Parade time moved to after noon to accommodate church services.
Louis G. Baldwin died Monday in Great Falls at 81. Funeral at United Church of Christ Fairfield with burial Sunset Hills Cemetery. Pallbearers named. Arrangements by Zwerneman Mortuary. Born August 18, 1889 in Illinois, he farmed in Wyoming and Canada before moving to Fairfield in 1921. Survived by son Louis, daughter Mrs. Ralph Eastwood, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
The Choteau Lions Club swim team dominated the 10th annual Choteau Relays, finishing first with 552 points ahead of Columbia Falls and eight other clubs. Eleven meet records fell, many by Choteau. both midget and junior squads earned multiple top finishes and new marks while coach Wayne Krahe managed 56 swimmers. The team planned a triangular meet with Butte Recreation and Anaconda midweek and has no July 4th plans.
Teton County’s 1972 wheat allotment will total 57 004 acres announced by Rex Manuel chairman of the county ASC committee. National domestic allotment remains 19.7 million acres and Montana’s total allotment is 1 410 495 acres as adjustments shift production to regions with greater efficiency. Provisions of the 1970 act allow farmers to adjust allocations and set aside requirements ahead of winter wheat planting.
Fireworks fund for the 4th of July stands within $50 of the $600 goal after a week of donations totaling over $150. Fund chairman Leo Pierre praised public support and urged continued contributions at local businesses and banks.
Dale Saunders, a Kansas native with 26 years in the U S Air Force and recent experience as sales manager at Lincoln Mercury Ford in Lewistown, is named sales manager at Choteau Ford Sales. Saunders plans to stay in Chateau, saying the family loves it and he has had enough moving.
Montana wheat and barley farmers expect higher net income from a freight rate cut effective July 1. Assistant Secretary Richard Lyng notes Montana’s rail costs rise from trucking limits. reductions of 12 to 20 percent will cut shipping by up to 15 cents per bushel, aiding export competitiveness for grain sent to the Far East via Pacific Coast ports.
Most Chateau stores will be closed on Monday July 3 due to July 4 falling on a Sunday making Monday a legal holiday.
Teton County residents may vote on forming a public hospital district covering the entire county. The district would fund county hospitals to meet Medicare and other federal subsidy rules. The Board of County Commissioners adopted the resolution after a public hearing with no opposition.
Saturday features a Jackpot Roping Contest and a Legion Hall dance. Sunday lists a pancake breakfast at 6 30 am the annual parade at noon RCA rodeo at two and fireworks at ten in the evening.

A Chinese wheat industry mission arrives in Great Falls for a six day Montana grain study with visits to farmers firms and a tour of storage and markets. The group will tour Giant Springs Rainbow Dam and C M Russell gallery and attend a Chinese dinner in Choteau. The visit highlights U S grain programs and Taiwan wheat purchases.
